I did couch surf way back in 2008, for a couple of nights while I travelled to a different city in my native country. It was a great way to get started on my trip (what's to see? how are things different in that place? tips or tricks from long time residents). Naturally, it wasn't such a cultural shock, even though it was still 5000km from my hometown.
