Depends. Visual novels have different subjects - many of them are focused on romance (though not all of them), so that's what they're often associated with. Yet some games are very innocent school-life/dating sims, just focused on that, without any mature content, while some have this sort of content and sometimes are even focused completely on it. Each game is different, you'll find very light-hearted stories and more dark ones, so it's hard to say if all "have something else going" :).

I actually have all but Black Closet and Royal Trap on steam. As for art style Asphyxia seem to be most in my taste from the little I've seen so far. Just discussing these games now have definitely pushed them further up in my to-play queue but there's one dilemma with these kind of games for me. I feel like it's a waste to be playing them on a computer and would really like to have them on mobile instead. I feel that would make it an overall more enjoyable experience with the comfort of a good sofa or bed :)

I noticed Loren and Planet Stronghold had some RPG elements attached to them, I might enjoy just because of that. I've felt they are lacking in the visual department though. Cinders are the one that truly stands out for me and I think I'd enjoy it as a more casual mobile experience but sadly I wasn't able to find a mobile version either. Yes, mobile games in general are very hit and miss imho. You can end up paying a pretty sum expecting to get a full experience only to find out progress are gated or at least artificially slowed down to make you buy your way out.
Oh, I wouldn't say Loren lacks in visual novel aspects :). Story isn't outstanding, it's rather classic rpg, you know, adventure, gathering your party of... eee... Amazon, mages, gladiator, dwarfs, elves, monks and others and doing various quests. Still, it's well written, there's a lot of dialogue, it has humor and impactful choices. Actually I would say that the battle system was a bit... hmm... not right? for my taste, it got repetitive really quick, though honestly I did play on easy difficulty XD. Interactions with your companions are also very natural (there are six romance option for every gender - you may play as male or female - though romance is never forced. And there is plenty non-romanceble companions that still have their loyalty quests and are important to the story).
As for Planet Stronghold, I must agree - it was one of their first game and story and writing aren't best in this one. But just now they realised another PS game, this time VN-tower defense mix, which may be interesting. Still, as for Winter Wolves games, those two (with addition of Seasons of the Wolf - this one was weakest than Loren imo) are the best. Their classic otome/dating sims are usually very weirdly-paced and generic.
I would recommenced "Cinders" the most too ^^ I think the creators are releasing another VN soon and it also look really good.
I was actually mostly thinking of Planet Stronghold with my judgement of lacking in the visual department. I've checked it out earlier because of of the RPG features. You're actually making pretty good case for Loren and I even found a copy on Play Store though the price is making me a bit sad. If I can get Cinders working properly while streaming to my shield tablet I think I'll try it out tonight. Thanks for en lighting me about VN and you recommendations :)
Not all of them, there's a series that got turned into an anime called higurashi no naku koro ni, there's no porn in that, it's very much like a horror novel, the first two chapters are on steam if you want to check them out.
There is no real "gameplay", it's like reading a book except it features images and sounds.
