Description

As you sit decrypting the message hidden behind your brother's portrait, you're summoned to the Captain's office. Walking through the bullpen, you don't notice the two figures silhouetted against the bright lights in the lobby. The Captain offers you a seat, and begins to rattle off a list of new cases and adds to your current workload. You're only half listening, catching bits and phrases as the Captain prattles on. "Regarding this Simmons case," he starts, but you're not listening. "Warehouse," he says. "Paranoid," he mutters. "Worrying behavior," he continues. You're soaking it all in, nodding along, storing the conversation to play back later when you've got some time to think.

Suddenly, the two figures in the lobby jump to the forefront of your mind. You spring from your chair and dash to the lobby. "Where did they go? Those two men, they were right here!" The clerks behind the desk look puzzled. Two women in handcuffs stare at you awkwardly. Maybe you imagined them... were they here at all?

You return to the Captain and apologize for running out. Back at your desk, you pack up your briefcase and plan your next move. What was it the Captain had said? Something about a... about a... a warehouse. Where was it? Rewind. Rewind. Rewind. "Warehouse on Hampton... landlord says Simmons was paranoid... worrying behavior." There we go. That's where you'll go next.

You activate your console to bring up information on the warehouse. You can forward directions to your cruiser's navsys, so you can analyze Simmons' case en route. Logging into your account, a sudden spasm grips the screen. The simple orange-on-black Broadriick Police Department console interface is gone; in its place you see only a string of numbers with the heading "gzedhCF."

Also, please don't add me for help. I'll try and hang out in Riddlers Labyrinth when I can.

Okay, I lied. I decided to try cracking the second one before going to sleep. ^-^ But now that there's more to solve, I'll go to sleep at last. Have this game too, thank you again, but OMG, can the next one be DE:HR? -faints and sleeps-

strange... used that in the first place, but it was still jumbled (two different sites)
or perhaps I just missed the message the first time... dunno!

playfair depends on a 25 letter alphabet. Two most common forms are either "combine I and J" or "drop Q." I was hinting at "drop Q" with the "suqqest" spelling. Dropping Q, or replacing Q with X, or replacing Q with Q, will all have the same effect on most online tools. If you used the wrong alphabet it might not have read well :)

Thanks again for the next giveaway! I do really like how the hints are integrated into the text. That's much better for the atmosphere than with a special "hints" section below the text. After reading the text my first try was James as keyword, but tried only the J=I thing (as I didn't know the "drop Q" way before), so Iames as keyword. Obviously wrong... And didn't get the suqqest hint, although I wondered why the line was to low so the g's were cut. :D So it's good that the riddle runs for one week, you can always stop and continue after thinking about it again. ;-)
