Description

Welcome to the fourteenth week of the 52 weeks of Christmas!!! What is the 52 weeks of Christmas you might ask? I will be giving away a new game each week for 52 week. To make things more fun, I will be asking a new question each week also. I hope that by doing this I may brighten someones week. I even create a group on Steam where you can follow every giveaway(link at the bottom).I hope you will have as much fun as I do with this.

New Week, New Question: Piracy is one of the most prevalent and controversial part of gaming. Some defend it saying that it is beneficial to gaming as a whole while other loath it and believe that it will be the end of the gaming world. What do you think of piracy? (I understand that this is a very touchy subject, please try to keep things civil, thank you :))
Thank you Snitt for the question.

Response: My response to this question is long this week so i will be posting it in my group. You can read it there.

You can join my Steam group where you will be alerted of all my giveaways, participate from time to time in choosing my next giveaway and even chose which game related question to ask. Thanks :) A discussion thread will also be open with this question and the old one if you want to discuss it with me or others

Happy new year to all of you, I wish you all the best in this new year, may your endeavors be entirely blessed and may you be prosperous in all you do.
God bless. :)

I was wondering when this question would pop up.

Long story short: piracy is a good evil. I will refrain from using the word necessary.

Piracy is the best competition and competition is always good. Whatever you are offering, pirates will offer the same thing at the same date as you for free. That should motivate people to make better offers not invest money in anti-piracy technology that is cracked usually on day one. Not to mention that "the internet has no borders" and you can't region restrict things or release them on a date in NA and then 3 days later RoW.

Please don't get me wrong. I don't advocate piracy and I wish that there wasn't any, but that at the same time I want the crackers to do their jobs and upload everything on day one. But I want it to have zero downloads. I want it to be there just as a reminder to publishers.

Piracy should be accepted only in 2 scenarios. The first one if the developer hasn't put out a demo and you want to see if you can run it / enjoy it. In this case it shouldn't be played for more than 30 minutes. The other scenario is when you actually bought the game and you somehow are unable to play it. Most common thing I'd imagine to be losing the CDs. Here's a personal example: I got a game given as a cover magazine (is that the correct word? given for free in the magazine, legally), which was not at the latest build and for some reason it couldn't be patched, stated so even in the magazine. The version had a few bugs, one of which was that a skill didn't work, one that I used. I paid for it, so I pirated the latest version which worked fine. Later I bought it again on steam.

Thanks xamon! Now if you don't mind I'm going to steal one entry.

I agree with you on quite everything.
Of course the perfect world would have no piracy, drm-free games (thank you GoG), demos for every game and fair prices (luckily PCs are already better than consoles here).
But for now we have to bear a ton of drm put by companies that are more concerned about selling the game at full price right away, afraid by piracy (surely a problem for them, but that can be reduced in different ways).

Btw thanks for the ga.

Another very interesting question. I used to pirate games, music, and software up till high school. I even bought a really large CD case just to store all my pirated CDs and I liked being the guy that could get you any pirated software/game you wanted. But at some point I became personally convicted that pirating is equivalent to stealing and that as a christian it was morally wrong for me to do so I eventually got rid of that whole CD case.
