Fun animal fact!
A flightless bird that went extinct 20,000 years ago has been found alive and well. Researchers think that the species re-evolved back into existence and returned to the island they originally inhabited. It was thought to have gone extinct when their original island home submerged into the ocean. It's a descendant of the White-Throated Rail (which did not go extinct) and re-evolved into the same species that went extinct 20,000 years ago. There has been no other documented case of a bird species becoming flightless twice in a row. This is not a new species of bird that has evolved, it is the same ancestral bird.
Evolution literally brought the exact same species back from extinction because it was perfect for its niche. How cool is that? :D
