So my boyfriend and I have been looking at "must see movie" lists and randomly picking off them in order to discover some great movies we've never seen. Problem is that most of those lists contain mostly older films, and he is not used to old films like I am. We are trying to make a list of old and newer films that are considered great.

I know the question is a bit subjective, but we trust normal people (you guys) over critics. :P

TL:DR We would love to hear what your favorite movies are. Or movies you think everyone should see. Hopefully we'll get a good mix of older and modern films. :)

My suggestion could be based on the director

Hirokazu Kore'eda: most of his films are family theme slice-of-life dramas.
my fav: Still Walking, After Life, Nobody Knows

Wes Anderson: The director who have a signature style in his films. Most of his films tell a story of broken relationship with parents/family.
my fav: Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums

Michel Gondry: Most of his films is quirky and have dreamlike visual style.
my fav: Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep, Mood Indigo

Denis Villeneuve: Recently have a great career in Hollywood, but you should check his earlier works
my fav: Incendies, Polytechnique

There's many more, but I think it's enough for now
Cheers :)

The Game starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn is a really good movie. It's fairly old, but still enjoyable!

So far we've seen:
The Handmaiden
The Invitation
The Witch
The Nice Guys
Cockney's VS Zombies

We put all the recommendations on a list and then used a random number generator to decide which ones to watch :P When we see a lot of them, I'll make a big thread and do a giveaway for each movie we saw :D

The Handmaiden was pretty good, but also very dark and very very NSFW. He liked it a lot more then I did lol.
The Invitation was interesting and well made, but very much a slow burn of a movie. It may have been predictable, but it felltvery real and the acting was very good.
The Witch is a love it or hate it type of movie. We really didn't like it unfortunately.
The Nice Guys was pretty funny. It's set in the 70s and is mainly dark humor. It's less focused on character development and plays more off the interesting chemistry the two leads have.
Cockney's VS Zombies was just a silly bad zombie flick that we all love. It was surprisingly better then most intentionally dumb zombie flicks I've seen in the US though.

Out of all these, I think my favorite so far was The Invitation for a slow suspense film and The Nice Guys for a dark comedy. My boyfriend's favorites are The Invitation and The Handmaiden.

I haven't seen The handmaiden and I have so many films pending that I won't in the near future, but his 'vengeance trilogy' with oldboy as his best film would be nice to see.

The nice guys was okay, imho. The Witch is amazing and amazingly... slow. Good tho, and you can talk about it later.

No idea about the invitation and conckneis. Thanks for the recomendation.
