What's the Story of your Garden, anyway? Do people still have gardens? Are plants digital now?

[Tier 2] I'm afraid of Witches or Cats, so T2 is as far as I'll venture.
[Tier 3] I see cute pixels, I hammer that blue checkout button.
[Have] Once upon a time, I saw cute pixels, and accordingly bought and 100%'d all of these.
[Expensive] If they had offered a $1 option, my $1s would have pierced the screen many times over. ;_;

[Not Tier 1] Ah, I remember when I paid for A Short Hike back in 2019, and Humble never gave me my key. Now I can pay another $5 to finally get that key (and another game). Makes me feel all Cozy! By letting me choose exactly how much more I'm paying, I even get to make a Choice!!!

Depends why you don't like Epic. I don't care for Epic as I can't write reviews there, post my screenshots, customize my profile to my liking, and so on. I don't care much about the whole exclusivity thing, even if it's shitty. It's just a place that has nothing to offer me, as I'm not just looking for a "press button to play a game" thing, but a platform with a community.

As is, this (the T1 price) is the same price A Short Hike goes on sale for during steam sales, so hardly worth it

I'm honored and slightly blushing that you remember me. Though I also want to clarify that you actively complained that the bundle was only at a 85% (?) discount, then started complaining about CV for whatever reason. You may not like something, or 15% of something still being too much for your budget, but 1/6th of the full price is a gigantic discount. if only groceries would have half as good ones.

random blowjob subject completely out of context aren't something you see everyday. i would feel ashamed myself of such weird* verbalization of such thoughts in open gaming forums, but i'm not the one who ever thought* about blowjob from developers. anyways, just as rare this subject is, like i said before, this weird* subject won't go away that easy. since you were fine to adopt such parameters, i'll be fine to use them too (altough not completely confortable i must say).

i would feel ashamed myself of such weird verbalization of such thoughts in open gaming forums, but i'm not the one who ever thought about blowjob from developers.

It's a figure of speech , and as such it's used to convey a meaning that's not taken literally, but thought about for a second and find its analogue related the original content. It doesn't work if somebody completely misses the point, and instead gets (fake?) upset about something that was never meant to be taken literally. I misjudged the audience.

To give context:
Til Tier 3, those are just games with some mediocre discount.

"$105 MRSP in only tier 3, full bundle costs $15 (1/7, 86% discount), tier 3 itself costs $5, about a 95% discount."

I checked now Brazil's prices and Steam historical prices, because some bundles are really not that good compared to regional prices.
Using Steamdb's currency stats, tier 3's historical low was 31,27€ in Brazilian Reals. The full bundle costs 13.71€.

The full bundle costs 1/3 of the historic low of only tier 3, in your regional pricing.
Now you either don't want those games at that price to begin with, have no funds to buy the games if you want them (which is okay, we all been there), or really needs some extra thrown in in the deal, if that is "mediocre discount" for you - hence the original joke that you took way too seriously in the most dramatic fashion.

With that out of mind, A Short Hike is indeed really nice, thanks for reminding me of it.

The incentive should be to complete the game. If it's only about achievements, the game itself doesn't really matter anymore.

Comment has been collapsed.

Ultimately, the debate about whether or not achievements are important in games is a matter of personal preference. Some people enjoy the challenge of trying to get all of the achievements in a game, while others find them to be a distraction. There is no right or wrong answer, and it simply depends on what you enjoy about playing games.

In the case of Alba, it is a game that is praised for its story and gameplay. The achievements in the game are not essential to the experience, but they can add an extra layer of challenge and fun for some people.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

True, but I can't say: A game is only worth playing if it has achievements. They might add a little to the incentive, but the game itself should offer enough incentives to play - and finish it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

the fucked up thing is, finishing and getting all the achievements isn't even the same sometimes because achievement people will whine about everything and their opposite (too many, too few, too easy, too hard, why add more after they finished it, why not add more with new content, etc.). best if devs just hand out all the pop-ups asap, so you can claim you have completed and perfected the game by playing about half of it. beyond ridiculous.

Spiral Scouts is one of my absolute favorite games. Just so much fun. Great story! Wonderful puzzles! I can't recommend it enough.

I played it to the end and done. No more story or new game+. That was it. Well, except for the achievements. See there where several achievements I had not gotten. So I spent time getting them. What did I get besides a sense of accomplishment. I got more lore. Found things I did not know were in the game. I experience more of the game then I would have if there were no achievements.

Achievements gave me goals and reasons to find all the little things that the creators put in. The stuff they want players to find and see. Things players would not do, if they just 1 run and done the game.

Though I play games on steam vs epic for different reasons then just achievements, but achievements do make a difference to many.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, I never doubted that, but you had enough incentives to play the game itself, because it is a cool game. Sure, achievements (can) add goals and things, but my point is, that it's not a good sign if you play a game just because of achievements.

And lore? Ok, The lore was there before, the achievements only add the incentive to look for it by playing again or doing more sidequests and so on.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Now the reason I replied like this was based on your comments. The primary comment to focus on was "What experience? E. g. the story of a game is the experience, or the way through the game. Achievements only show them, but they don't add anything to the game itself."

That is why I told you about my experience with Spiral Scouts. Which if you have never played, you should give it a try if you like puzzles and slight adult (Conkers Style) humor. Yes, I got the story and enjoyed the game. Not because of achievements but because it was fun. The achievements did add to the game. They helped point me in directions I would not have looked. I got to experience things I would not have with out them. If I had played this game on Epic or any other site that did not have achievements. I would have missed out on content the creators worked hard to add.

Your comment now just validates my point. "The achievements only add incentive to look for it by playing again or doing more side-quests" is exactly why achievements add value to a game. I am not saying, buy a game for the achievements but the whole debate started about getting it on epic or steam. That steams version adds more value to the game with achievements. Those achievements help to add more to the game. Yes, there almost always is a price. Though it comes down to if those features are worth the price.

On a side note. There are some games have no story to them and the achievements add so much to game play to them. Animality, Montaro and Montaro:Re are 3 such games that were (and still are) just fun little time wasters. They are simple space bar or click jump games. No real story but thanks the achievements. I put in some good time on them. Trying to reach those goals. Animality was a lot of work. It was fun and revealed a lot of stress from the day. Oh and when I reached those goals. Pure serotonin!

Sorry this is long! I tend to be wordy some times when I am debating something. I am not trying to change you're view. Just that there are valid reason to why people would pass up a FREE copy on Epic for a payed copy on steam and that Achievements have value.

I wish you happy gaming!

Garden Story is one of my favourites and well worth the bundle if you don't own it, it's amazingly adorable and has about 10-19 hours worth of story and sidequests :) While the others are only a few hours long, they're very special stories and relaxing/fun to play!

Not really my bundle.

A Short Hike:
Is available in the Humble App if you have an active subscription (or is in your library if you bought the April 2019 one)
Was included in itch.io's "Bundle For Racial Justice and Equality"
Was free at Epic
(yet I still haven't played it, good reminder anyhow)

played Assemble with Care after buying it on a sale, it's a sweet little game with a focused story and perfect length for it.

According to HLTB, tier 's games are both 1.5 hours long, at least length-wise it's a pricey tier (though that makes tier 2 pretty good with 1€/game as an extra, and if you like the games, the full bundle is still 8 games for 11€)

Alba: A Wildlife Adventure was free at Epic , Here Comes Niko! was in the 2022 Jingle Jam that I bought, Garden Story sounds like the only game I'm really missing from this.

Too many times these "cozy games" are just too slow, or low-impact for me. They generally mix low challenge and repetition which can build familiarity - judging from the review scores they still perform well, but after checking the negative reviews it's a recurring theme that the games are indeed repetitive. I think I'll skip this, I've been eyeing the Cyberpunk bundle instead

Technically, it was a Humble original, a steam key isn't really promised for those. If you got one, good for you, if not, shouldn't really hold them accountable for not giving a freebie.

I have a faint memory of something like this, I think from September Bundle '18 or so, a game starting with E Ethereal , where they ran out of steam keys, and eventually instead of restocking they just stealthily removed it from the keys section without notifying the people who were waiting for the restock. It's still downloadable as DRM-free from there.

HB did simialr a few times, like when they removed Domina keys and the keys section from the bundle after the intrusive thoughts took over the dev, removing access to even unused and uncovered keys.

And weird situation with Peppy's Adventure too at https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/2j2fH/humble-bundle-fck-cancer-bundle-peppys-adventure-removed-from-purchase-page, though this is on Steam (HB asked devs for X keys, devs asked Steam for X keys, X bundle got sold. HB wanted more keys because people loved the bundle, asked devs for another Y, devs asked Steam, Steam said nooope.)

That isn't correct now.
From Steamworks Documentation, Steam Keys:
https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/keys#2

Default Release (or standard release)
[...] Games and applications launching on Steam may receive up to 5,000 Default Release Steam Keys to support retail activities and distribution on other stores. Did that change in the past couple of years? Friends of mine (worked on titles you'd know) would typically just put 5 or 10,000 into it and get their keys, maybe it was an approval process but didn't sound like it. I guess they are generally approved quite quickly as long as you're not taking the piss (according to the policies you linked).

I don‘t know if I remember correctly but there was a time when Humble promised Steam keys for originals that get newly published. Also they put it on the bundle page for all buyers but only if you were quick to reveal it you got a key.

So yes, it was nice they gave them away but this kind of lottery felt strange for a paid bundle and I would have liked it if they had been transparent about that. For me, it was like two years later that support finally told me „no, even if it says so on the bundle page, we will never restock it.“
