Not directly related: interesting how "lady" can be offensive when applied to a woman, but "sir" isn't offensive when applied to a man. (I understand why that's the case, but it's interesting all the same.)

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the term, just saying that some are offended by it. I don't have much an opinion one way or the other, personally.

A quick summary of my understanding of the issue: "Lady" used to refer to a specific class of woman which was expected to behave a certain way. Over time, it came to mean a woman who behaved that way, whether in that particular class or not. Some women would prefer not to be described as the kind of person that word is meant to describe because they'd prefer not to behave as a lady and do not see themselves as "ladylike."

I suppose it might annoy some men if strangers randomly called them "lord," but that's not quite the same thing.

To me the offended woman you're describing sounds either like an uptight feminist or like a skank who's so committed to being a skank that the word "lady" actually becomes an insult to her thrashy image.

I really wouldn't feel bad about offending either of these types.

Being ladylike means not having a job and being well-trained at pleasing men (being good at playing the piano, doing needlework, singing for men, et cetera; there's a specific list of skills.) That actually sounds fairly skanky. That's just a point of view though. I think it's okay to want to be "a lady" if you have a different idea about what it means.
