They even held the workers' passports hostage so they couldn't leave. Just awful they got away with this, now they're being rewarded after slaving these people to death and injury

Just adding here, that's the norm in middle east. The workers go there, they have to surrender their passport in order to get wages and once they do, they become slaves. And this happens not just to the labour class.

Same happened to my brother who works in the oil industry and had more than 20 years of experience. He had to switch jobs due to recession and found one in Dubai. For the initial few months it was all okay but then they asked for his passport which he refused to surrender. Then they stopped paying him. Went on like that for 3 months after which he simply went back to his country. He even sued the company but to no avail.

Most people dont. This was expected to happen back in 2010 and Fifa went foward regardless.
i certainly wouldn't in any circumstances pay to watch anything hosted by them, and this one so far proved to be a farce where qatar shows how it wants to be perceived, rather than what it actually is.

Even Blatter found Qatar a bad idea..

They were supposedly paying fans to post positive stuff on social media, report any bad comments, and then they would get their trip paid and some spending money, but they already pulled back on that spending money because they felt they still got negative remarks (that the human rights were discussed each time) in the news.

Also zero alcohol is tolerated (even though a beer is already 12 euro). But soccer fans and no alcohol..

I think, it's either Argentina or Brazil. Other favorites are Germany and France but they haven't been playing well lately, and both are ridden with injuries. Portugal and England have some great players but they play boring defensive football/soccer and I don't believe they have chances. Portugal also has Ronaldo who will want to be in the starting eleven, but he's more of a burden nowadays than a leading player. As for England, Gareth Southgate is not a coach at all. There are also Spain, Croatia and Belgium, but I won't bet on them. Spain has the weakest squad in years, and leaders of Croatia are old (despite Modric still being one of the best players in the world). The golden years of Belgium are in the past (and they didn't win anything) - their leaders are old, Hazard is in a very bad form. They have one of the best midfielders in the world, though.
p.s. Though it's a rare thing for South American teams to win in a World Cup that is being held outside of South America.
p.p.s. Sorry for my English.

however defensive football wins games, the 2016 European champions wasnt much different to this year´s team. But Ronaldo is clearly not in good form and he will surely want play the full match, unfortunately

You wrote a huge mistake my friend, the only time Brasil won world cup in SA was in Chile in 1962.
Basically the whole 5 titles were Sweden 1958, Chile 1962, Mexico 1970 and US 1994 both NA and Japan/South Korea 2002 Asia.

I really liked the world cups in 1994, 1998 and 2002.

@WhatTheDuck The best europeans teams are in the Cup, altho FIFA is extremely corrupt and only thinks about money, so since you don't know... The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the 23rd FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international men's, this tournament will be the first to include 48 teams, expanded from 32... which is an absurd and utterly disgusting so we're going to see terrible teams that have no idea how to play football at all playing... in my opinion 32 is way too much! World Cup is the elite of the elite! is should be less than 32 so we can't watch horrible teams "playing" or trying...

For the record.

Group A: Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, Netherlands
Group B: England, Iran, USA, Wales
Group C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland
Group D: France, Australia, Denmark, Tunisia
Group E: Spain, Costa Rica, Germany, Japan
Group F: Belgium, Canada, Morocco, Croatia
Group G: Brasil <3 , Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon
Group H: Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea

P.S. I don't know if you speak portuguese, prolly you don't but check out Rica Perrone video about what happened today.
Great Saudi Arabia they played well and did a great work! I didn't know their team had increased so much tbh,
awesome tuesday isn't it? :P This match was amazing.... for them and for us. "Brazilians"

Yesterday the game between Qatar and Ecuador was utterly terrible lmfao, I've never seen anything like that b4 in my life o.O
Well at least Qatar made history as first host nation to lose opening world cup game.
Portugal is good but Cr7 is tired and he is the machine and the goat of the Portugal team.. so let's see.
This is the last cup of Neymar Jr.... he said it many times that he won't play another world cup.. altho Idk he is what 31 or 30 smth like that so in the next 4 years he'll get old also he had a lot of injuries in the last 2 years but recovered also he doesn't need to play anymore.
Argentina has Messi which is a Goat and their team is quite strong. o.O

They got cold feet, look at their first touch. Yes they are currently Asian Cup Champion, but they got no big player like South Korea or Japan to calm and lead on such a big event. But I still think people shouldn't bash them too hard, football are not video game, it is what it is, a weak country will give weak performance given any circumstances.

But people from strong country didn't understand how happy is it when your weak country able to participate in WC, when the flag is showing on this event, let alone scoring goals/ win against them.

"In conclusion, figures referring to fatalities in connection with the 2022 World Cup vary depending on definition, including of where migrant workers came from, where and when they died, and whether their deaths can be described as work-related or not. However, given the inconsistencies and shortcomings in Qatar's own official data, a concrete conclusion is impossible to ascertain, which in turn raises the question as to why exactly the Qatari authorities are unable to provide reliable information."

Plus: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/11/18/qatar-world-cup-migrant-workers/
Plus 2: In Italy between 2011 and 2021 8000 people died when working. Italy has a population of 60.000.000 inhabitants. Qatar has 3.000.000.

it's hardly the players fault, when everyone's been criticizing Fifa for years over this, with reports and documentaries and it all went to deaf years.
For a player its a difficult decision to make a choice that affects your entire team. and if any player refused participating they were substituted by another player.
iran, refused to sing their anthem and spoke in support of women rights,

they should have intervene and do media coverage while constructions were going
purposely turned a blind eye until it was too late

At some point you have to say "Enough". At the end of the day it's their right to do whatever, but honestly if you don't have the backbone to even decline slavers, then what's the point.

I'm not saying it's easy either, but what is, y'know.

Just like many people don't buy products made by slave labor or don't visit locations known for violence against minorities; many would also never earn money and support financially (which is what these footballers are doing) a regime that is known for its inhumane environment and so many other issues like violence and intimidation against foreign and domestic journalists.

I get wanting to be a footballer and earn money from your passion, but if I suddenly had a choice to earn money for shilling the CCP with my freelancing for a good amount of money, I'd still end up turning it down, even if it was a very hard decision. England never even needed that money to begin with, for example.

Though i dont know numbers, im pretty sure this is a really low national team salary compared to what top players receive at their respective teams.
well, i get your frustration, players give a lot of fake speeches and demonstrations of solidarity, but they would represent their countries and themselves as world class, over defending people's right of a country they know nothing about
fifa is however playing political games, and things have been pretty dodgy since Russia hosted the games
if it makes you any happier this tournament didn't work out for both fifa and qatar, as the lack of rights is daily on display.

For sure, I agree. But I will say that most footballers in national teams aren't making minimum wage. At least in the richer countries, like most of Europe. If it's a question of dying of hunger or becoming homeless vs. going there, then the option's obvious. But it for most isn't the dilemma in those regions.
There isn't a single England team footballer for example that has this dilemma.

I'm glad it isn't working out for Qatar, but honestly I'm baffled it even took place since the controversy around this started when Qatar got announced and it's been a hot button topic the entire time.

As a German, you're saying you live in Nazi Germany. You claim atrocities from half a millennia ago are the equivalent of your ball game having people actively die to build arenas for. It's just honestly so ridiculous that I can't help but think that you're either trying to be argumentative for the sake of it or you just legit can't comprehend basic concepts of time or concepts of direct actions having direct consequences vs. indirect actions and indirect consequences.

I'm sorry, I tried, I really did, but like when goalposts just keep getting moved and standards get fitted just to argue, then why even talk about it.

The only problem as Borsdy said as well is that first you came to an arrangement and then at the last minute you go and say "nah". Same goes with the approved Belgian away shirt and then now suddenly its not.
Shows little respect to made deals, which also normally have rules to follow. And smells more of abuse of power.

Yeah, right. I should respect slavery and severe homophobia because they are a norm for Qatar. I should probably also respect Iran discriminating its women and murdering protesters. And my own country with its repressions against our people - and, of course, traditions of some of our southern regions where teenage girls are forced into marriage, their genitals get mutilated in early childhood, and gay people are downright murdered. Hell, maybe I should go even further and respect them attacking a certain neighboring state since that's perfectly fine according to their rules.

I apologize in advance if you perceive this as a personal attack, it's not. It's just that I don't believe that a country's rules, traditions or even laws justify such ugliness.

Argentina is México's Boogeyman, I'm not sure but I think México have won only once or twice against them (other tourneys or friendly marches). More adrenaline I guess.
