GOG would be better than steam [at least valuating by product quality/reliability and free bonuses and ease-of-access and basically every category there is other than library convenience], and nothing isn't better than uplay, so that seems obvious :P

The only advantage GOG has over steam is drm free titles, and some exclusives, really.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Er.
Valve offers no product guarantees and is filled with broken and scammy games.
GOG manually updates their own products to make sure they're up to date and functional.
Winner: GOG

Valve charges extra for soundtracks and backgrounds and so forth.
GOG almost always offers them free.
Winner: GOG

Valve has nearly no customer support, and infamously poor business practices, taking as long as a decade to update core client elements.
GOG has solid customer support and carefully takes customer feedback into account.
Winner: GOG

GOG games are easy to download and easy to play and give 'free' network play with family and friends by way of being DRM-free.
Valve has inherent match-making services that make some multiplayer games easier to run, and automatic game updating.
Winner: Tie

GOG has an accessible library and uses your past purchases to discount new ones.
Valve will let you buy the exact same game repeatedly without offering gift purchases, but offers higher sales and bundled games, and has equal library management ability.
Winner: Tie (though with more respectability from GOG, and more reason to buy steam )

There's a few other points, but they're all in line- either being an effective tie, or favoring GOG.

Really, anyone that thinks steam is better than GOG, as a service, simply never paid much attention to the traits of the two distributors.

That's a pretty poor and biased comparison, to be honest. I, however, doubt I'll change your point of view, so I won't bother trying it.

Even reading to your list, I believe steam to be a much superior platform, kind of google+ to facebook.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually, steam and facebook share a lot more in common, having the same sort of interface, stability, and other concerns. Google+ is more niche, and makes a better parallel to GOG.

Though, the fact that you considered objective comparisons to be 'poor and biased' and didn't provide any clarification to such, and felt the need to address the matter solely to say you were too good to give me your perspective, does makes the validity of your perceptions a bit questionable.

However, though the topic was objective quality rather than personal preference, I fully support your right to subjectively prefer one platform to another.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I said it is pretty poor because it lacks a lot of feasible comparisons in which steam would surpass GOG greatly.

Last september, I bought MGS V with money made solely from selling cards from my other games.

That is a bunch of things GOG lacks: A good AAA Repertoire, A market where users are able to sell different items, trading cards for some games which users may sell or collect. And that's just an example.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Game selection isn't directly relevant to quality of service.
Market could be considered a negative. Trading cards are a silly concept, no matter how useful their effects may be.
None of those are related to quality of products or service.

Again, you're totally okay to have a subjective preference, but none of those things relates directly to the topic I was attempting to address: That GOG offers higher quality products and services directly related to those products, with higher quality support.

It's totally okay to say you prefer steam- hell, it's even okay to say you prefer Ubi, but people may look at you reeeeeal funny over it.

But that doesn't at all negate the fact that Valve offers a very subpar service as game quality and support are concerned, and that GOG offers a much higher quality one.

If you prefer the bells and whistles of steam to GOG, then that's totally fine. Noone is currently discussing supplanting any one service with another.

But in quality of core products and service, it's a pretty clear GOG>Origin>steam>Uplay dynamic.

Of course, each one has their own unique traits, be they positive, neutral, or negative, that may have you prefer one to another.

Except maybe Uplay, not sure what positives it really has :X

I intentionally didn't include Galaxy functionality, since it's not core to purchasing a game- I was trying to be as conservative and precise in focus as possible.
[Besides, it's my personal opinion that if I brought that up, it'd be too unfair toward steam 0:P )

On objective fronts, GOG certainly leads. steam has a lot more bells and whistles not directly related to purchasing a game, currently, but their value is subjective- like for you, who dislikes many of the features. :)

Once Galaxy becomes feature-robust, there's really a lot of potential there..

And about the free games? On steam you dont need to spent one cent to play decente games, i can´t find the free to play tab on GOG. The community on steam is better, i actually made friends on steam, and steam will be online for a long time, GOG i dont know.... Just do this to add some points to steam, because your texto only show the GOG strong points and none of the steam´s... Sorry for english, i tryed my best...

Comment has been collapsed.

Free to play is a valid argument about distributor quality, but it's a hard one to quantify- most free games on steam are also available free elsewhere, for one.

Moreover, it still doesn't relate directly to the quality of the games you BUY, which is the actual discussion point. Again, we're referring specifically to the benefits of buying a game from GOG over buying one from steam- absolutely nothing else.
Ie, how much effort GOG and steam put in to make sure the games you buy are functional, and what content they throw in with purchase, the support they provide, and so forth.

The community argument is nonsense- or rather, it's not only not relevant, it's blatantly untrue. steam is notorious for having a sizably bad consumer base, to the point that MMOs that integrate steam access have a reputation of negatively reacting to the fact.
GOG's community is, as far as I've seen, considered overall to be very helpful and friendly.
A larger part of the matter is how GOG's staff takes a more active hand in managing discussion quality, I imagine.

That aside- yes, steam integrates an in-depth friend/chat system that is quite useful and convenient, and there's no argument that that's another valid argument about distributor quality- that, AGAIN, has nothing at all to do with purchasing a game from steam. :'P

Predicting the future is not a talent of mine, so I won't even address the last point-

Edit: Though I can say this:
Anything you buy from GOG, you permanently own, and can easily make a back-up of the install files for. so even if GOG one day does shut down, you should be safe.

If steam crashes, you don't have near as reliable a guarantee that you'll still easily be able to access your games, even if you do manage to somehow install all of them. Moreover, unlike GOG's install files, even if you did manage to install them all, you couldn't transfer them to new hard drives.

Ergo, GOG wins that, as well :)

GOG has universal price match to usd.
If you buy with Canadian $, you're refunded the difference in GOG credit for any games where the publisher prohibits actual price matching.

In other words, there's nothing to add, it's already fully integrated and not going to be changing. :P

If they're really not providing that for Canadian $, that's a blatant contradiction to their stated policy, and I'd push them on it until they fix whatever weird mishap is causing the exception. =O

Oh, it's because Euro, Canadian $, and Usd have nearly identical market value atm, perhaps?
Or are they saying Fair Price doesn't apply to currency conversion at all, only to hidden publisher fees?

Either way, that's.. unfortunate, given that Euro > usd > canadian$, regardless of international exchange rate. >_<
so if what they're saying is accurate, basically anyone out of the us is getting screwed, a bit. :/

I can somewhat attest to the higher regional prices, being German-born- whenever I visited Germany, video games were always more expensive :X

Though it's the publishers trying to get more money out of customers, not the countries themselves charging more.

Yeah, capitalism is weird, lets go with that :P

GOG's 75% = steam's 85% discount, that's the comparison point I use.
Lower discounts tend to match up closer/more often, but GOG breaking 80% off tends to be really rare.

I imagine complaints may be similar [if less vitrolic, since we're not dealing with steam's more disreputable elements], but just based around different price points.

Every sale, there's a handful of games GOG offers cheaper than steam, but generally steam has the better prices.
Of course, GOG offers more quality- and steam offers a potential further discount from trading card gains.

Generally, I try to snap up any steeply discounted GOG game [that I want] when I see it, to get that better quality for comparable price. Which is why I'm irked I skipped on Monkey Island. :'P

sadly, no matter how much we like GOG, our wallets have to come first, and that means paying close attention to steam key bundles and steam's sharply discounted sales.

Of course, neither site has especially good store organization, and GOG lacks a steamgifts-like "sort by highest discount" sales section, so that kinda hurts it as well- I think people generally only check GOG when a game they want is released, or during GOG sales :'P

GOG's parent company makes the Witcher games, so they offer free GOG activation for your witcher 1 and 2 steam keys.

Witcher 3 got handled a bit differently, however, with the GOG keys being thrown in the retail box along with the steam keys, and the digital purchases remaining [currently] exclusive.

Maybe after Galaxy hits production release and they prepare their infrastructure and business model to handle increased traffic -- then the increased exposure might do them some good. Currently, I believe they rely much more on their curated boutique approach in order to keep their excellent level of service sustainable in line with moderate growth.

As have roughly 50% of people that use the DRM, according to reviews on the worst-affected games- seems to be closer to maybe 20% on the more functional ones, which is still a ludicrously high amount of people to buy a game and not receive something functional. :X

And yeah, if you want good support go to Origin or GOG. Not going to find it from Valve or Ubisoft because they just don't caaaaare. :X

I don't know, Uplay support have always been really nice to me rather than Steam support which I would describe as 'actively malevolent' (usually sending out lots of automated responses that have nothing to do with my problem before offering to resolve whatever the issue is by deleting my Steam account).

Unfortunately nice is not the same thing as competent. Uplay support have never actually managed to solve any of my problems - they were just very polite and sometimes gave me free games to say sorry which sometimes also didn't work.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ah, I've never personally used Ubi-support, I was just going off what I'd heard, which labeled them as completely unhelpful.
The free games thing I haven't heard of before, but that sounds passably decent of them.

And certainly, it'd take impressive dedication to match up to steam support [who currently has still yet to reply about deleting the wrong game from my account]- but then, I wasn't trying to actively compare the two to one another.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think it is fair to say that GOG have the best support and Steam by far the worst. In my experience Uplay and Origin both have support staff that try and be helpful but appear to be let down by wider problems.

In the case of Uplay it simply seems technologically the least stable of the platforms and struggles with a variety of issues that nobody appears able to resolve. While at Origin I think the problem is simply crappy EA policies on various issues.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

EA is too used to money coming to them.
They're used to releasing a $60 sports game, spending only a year of development instead of the usual 2-3, and releasing a new iteration the very next year.
Meanwhile, fans will buy that at full retail, rather than wait for it to drop [usually to ten percent retail!] within a year.

Generally, EA marketing is limited in scope [Big fanfare! Then ignore any follow-up.], and speaking from my interactions with the company, they have a strict "if they gears don't work, replace them, but never innovate" mindset. Very business like, very non-empathic, and not very prone to change or implementing new ideas.

Wouldn't call them a poor company- in fact, their attention to quality lets them have things like well-received support staff- but they're not very good at doing things that are different from what they're already doing.

Honestly, if they just opened Origin up to non-EA games, they could probably make a pretty big market impression.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think I'd probably agree with most of that.

Back in the 90s while I was at university I used to work part time for a video game retail distributor. I ended up in the buying department which was awesome due to all the freebies. EA were real assholes to deal with, you could never win with them.

The deals they pushed for on distribution and exclusivity were very aggressive and a lot of people like Sega got pushed into contracts that hurt them in the long run. But as long as EA were making money they never accepted that there was any reason they should change, even if some of their crap seemed to amount to killing the (metaphorical) geese that were laying (metaphorical) golden eggs.

I don't think they have changed or adapted their mentality at all since then. They must hate Steam and its market share - but I simply don't think they could ever accept the kind of compromises and deals that would allow Origin to expand. They always seem to want too much control over everything.

Certainly not in line with the est. 80 million people that died as a result of World War II.

While Ubisoft might envy that sort of destructive market impact, lets consider alternative analogies in the future, perhaps. :P

Isn't an encore meant to be something people ask for? I don't think anyone asked for this!

I don't think we asked for it the first time, either, but Humble seems pretty intent on giving it to us.
It's like a pushy teen boyfriend asking for sex:
"Come oooonnnn. You'lll liiiiikeeee it. Just tryyyyy it.
..I mean, yes, I haven't bathed in weeks and my junk doesn't always work right and I might even have some stds...
...but youuu'llll liiiiiikeee iiiiit!"

steam is the pushy, dumb jock that just doesn't wanna bother putting the effort in and lets you come to them, GOG is the lovable somewhat hipster geek that doesn't always know quite what to say but is always there for you in a pinch, and Origin is the cheerleader that's a total social butterfly, but doesn't quite get it.

We won't talk about Ubi.
