Guessed all answers, but wrong. Imo only true englishspeaker can solve this right, who knows every semantic meaning for all these words. I know max 1-2 with my dictionary :-)

Word association games are obviously best in languages you understand. That's why I picked a bit easier words. I randomly retreived several gameboards and chose the ones I think would be generally understandable. I then randomized the words out on the board and after that I played the game for myself as if my partner got each round correct.

English isn't my native tongue either, but I actually prefer the english version over the swedish one when playing with friends. :) I bought the swedish one for my parents though!

I got one of the biggest Boardgame Collections you´ve ever seen, but I don´t see any chance for me to solve this puzzle.
And my english is to bad for puzzles, not only for this one.

Yeah, word puzzles are hard if you don't know the language well. Can't solve them all I guess. :)

Final chance bump!

With 13 minutes remaining I don't have much chance for completing it. I'm pretty sure I'm only 1 character off but my creativity reached it's limit. Will you post an answer after the giveaways end? Also have a bump ;P

Go through all of the hints again? I was able to solve it in around 10 minutes or so with them. Just go for the most logical answer without overthinking things.

The hints refer to ones I already had. I tried the obvious paths, the non-obvious ones and every possible combination. Like I said - I'm pretty sure that I'm messing up just one thing every time. I'll post what I had as the most probable answer after the giveaways end as to not spoil it for anyone (if the author of this puzzle gives me his permission to do so :P)

With the hints it all made sense to me. There are some ambiguous ones but it should have been solvabele. I think you got stuck on one weird answer which probably make sense to you. I wonder which one it was, I'm sure Nordhbane will reveal the answers soon though.

Yup, for me "kitchen" and "paper" was an obvious match that ruined it :P

The term kitchen paper instead of paper towel seems to be a very british thing. I've never heard the expression before actually.

Strange, I could've sworn I checked that one at some point. Every one I ended up trying had 4 out of those 5. Never got all 5 at once.

Almost solved it.
Bedwear (clocks on your wrists are called "watches", got this one with one of the hints tho) and kitchen paper (a library doesn't have to contain papers or books) screwed it up for me. Got the rest.

A watch is a type of clock. And remember, this is about associations, it doesn't have to be literal. Just like an orange is not an apple, in fact, the connection between them is that you can't compare the two of them.

Except that both apples and oranges are, in fact, fruits. It's not too farfetched that in a game of associations the two fruits belong together - comparable or not.

There's a famous saying about apples and oranges. "You can't compare apples and oranges", which means you can't compare two things because they are too different. That's what I'm talking about.

Got the board game for Christmas from my GF, but have not tried it yet.

I thought I knew a little about how the game worked, but looking over this puzzle, I see that I was mistaken! Still, looking forward to playing. I love board games and I don't get to play very often.

This puzzle is a rather one-sided version of the boardgame. The game is awesome, you really should get hold of another couple and play a few rounds of it! :)

Yeah, there was no chance I was getting it. I had everything right at some point except for the "Wear" - my mind immediately went to bell since you can't wear a clock, but rather, a watch. I figured the term bell was associated with bell-bottoms, along with the hint of it being uncommon since it's no longer in fashion, but bell-sleeves are a "version that's more in fashion nowadays".

The hint solidified the bell answer for me, making me try to brute force between a combination of App: Games, Blackberry, Clock and Apple: Orange, Company, Computer, and Kitchen. ;P

It was a fun puzzle, good job ~

Only one question about that logic, which did the apple-hint have to do with bell-bottoms in your case? Personally I meant the Apple Watch.

And for anyone thinking "hey, he said watch, not clock", just remember that the app to show time is called Clock! ;)

Haha, I never realized it was meant to be an "apple" hint. I thought you saying something in regards to what the previous hint was alluding to was more along the lines of something that can't be compared. With you explaining it now, it's easy to see that's what you meant. When I originally read that hint though, my mind just picked out bits and pieces that related to my train of thought.

Then again, apple bottom jeans are also a thing.. ; A ;

That's what I love about word association games, you never can be completely certain what your opponent's intentions are.

OMG. I can't believe it. I'm very very dumb. I did exactly the solution pools, but did not realize that the remaining cards would be the giveaway. That was it, correct?

Comment has been collapsed.

That's it. As with the rules of the game, the words that you've picked gets covered up, thus leaving only 5 visible symbols in the end.

Since it was marked that it was a train, one can figure out that you probably only need one GA code. :)

Why? Why? lol...I spent hours analyzing and discovering this type of game and managed to do exactly as it is in the image of the solution. It happens! Thank you pal, good puzzle.

I wonder how many native English speakers made the connection between "wear" and "clock" - because there's such a sharp distinction that a watch is a timepiece that is worn, and a clock is a timepiece that is absolutely not (unless you are flavor flav)... Nonetheless, I love the idea behind the puzzle :)

"A watch is a type of clock that is small and can be carried."

Is the time displayed on your phone a watch or a clock? If we go by the distinction that it's a timepiece that you wear, it would be a watch, but the name of the app displaying it is clock.

All watches are clocks, but not all clocks are watches. In Swedish we also have a different name for the type of clock you have on your arm, so it's not something that's gotten lost in translation. I know fully well that one would normally call it a watch, that doesn't mean it's a faulty association.

Sorry if you thought I was being overly critical of the puzzle, that wasn't my intention at all, I was genuinely curious as to how many native speakers made that connection. I would never dream of describing a watch as being "a kind of clock", and wouldn't imagine any dictionary would ever do so, apart from a learner's dictionary (or, as in your link, a "simple" English article) - but I wasn't complaining, thanks again for the puzzle :)

On a side note, a native speaker would never suggest that we wear phones, but that's a different matter entirely :D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, a phone is carried, but I think you understood the point of what a clock is and isn't perhaps isn't as clear as some here would make it . :) And an Apple Watch's time displaying app is still called Clock. ;)

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I think that your logic is wrong. You can display a movie on smartwatch in app called "tv", but it doesn't mean that you wear tv. Same with "clock", you display clock on smartwatch/smartphone, but it's not wearing clock.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But what is the definition that makes the app on the watch a clock if a watch can't be a clock?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, it's only a app name, It's how the programmers named it, probably because it was called "clock" on pc, then on smartphone and it would be confusing to make the same app with other name to run on watch.

Well, I'm not saying that there is no connection between wear and clock, but it's just too far for this game. But it's only my opinion.

Welp, I had almost all except I thought clock was the clock app, since you don't wear a clock you wear a watch...
