With the current promotion making the game almost entirely free (for a limited time only, grab it while you can!) it seemed a good time to make a thread for discussing the game and for helping SGers find others to game with. If you've any questions about DDO, do feel free to ask them here!

Note that none of these are entirely up to date with fine details, so it's still best to look to the DDOWiki first, and then just use the planners for organizing your data. All the more so as the wiki lists bugged elements which the planners may not.

It's been seven years sense i last played this, it might be interesting to try it once more, i wonder if I can access my old account, my character had a few items that used to be good, which i am sure are probably much out of date. but at least my character's past life feet are probably still reliant,

The game has no mana potions if i remember right, so being a healer in a game like that is super ultra hardcore.

There are some, but they've always been extremely rare and valuable drops. You'd only ever use them for raids, and even then most players would hesitate to use them. There was a whole thing about people giving a healer mana potions post-raid, to help make up for any they'd used [again, they're valuable, so it hurts putting that all on one player; really discouraged end-game healers if you didn't compensate them the losses] or to reward them for a run well handled.

I loved playing healers as well, though dealing with the fact that healers often took the brunt of hostility on a failed PUG run [regardless of whether such criticism was warranted or not] definitely led to some discouraging moments when playing a healer in public raids.

I played the game dedicatedly enough that the payments never bothered me much, since the in-game premium currency dropped easily enough. Definitely became daunting once they started releasing all sorts of end-game content and they redesigned the game so that only the most high-level, recent content mattered for end-game play. A lot less "what do I want to unlock next" and more "I need to unlock this, if I want to play with anyone". Really picked up a lot of the worst aspects of other MMOs, at that point.

Also remember a time when i played my bard and my noob party went and wiped themselves out so i had to cast my invisibility sphere and go fetch their tomb stones... was thrilling because the mobs, even though they could not see me, could still hear me.
This game is truly unique, no other mmo comes anywhere close to it's DnD mechanics, this is why people still play it.

For sure. Some of the content was a bit too shallow or, in the end, too grindy and lengthy and demanding on builds. But when the game played well, the mechanics, teamwork, and opportunities for awesome events.. the game definitely highlighted what makes MMOs (or multiplayer games in general) compelling in the first place.

That is a pity, sounds like perhaps i'd best stay away if i want to keep my good memories about the game intact.

Well, with the coupon code, you can unlock everything, or near-enough so. Kinda sucks for premium players like myself who bought a ton along the way, but it's a great time for new or returning players to hop in on the game. Refamiliarizing oneself with the game'd probably earn you enough game currency along the way to afford any new content once it releases. The issue was always in playing catch-up after lost time or in new players not having the right content, more than anything else.

Back when i played i was not overly concerned about builds and the like, it was just pure fun.

That sounds REALLY early, if you're indicating that such was still a general theme for the game. I remember that period, though- it'd be back when The Shroud was the game's end-game. Definitely was a hell of a lot more accessible of a game back then. If you're talking more specifically, then I totally get that, as well- I used to love 'GIMP' [Get Into Multiclassing Project] runs, where each level you'd randomly roll for your class, and have to adapt your buil on the fly,

You could only play with other GIMP players and couldn't use outside items except for those traded with others within the same dungen run when the items were initially obtained, so it really strssed improved build and team-play concepts over play efficiency/potency. Even now, that's one of the most fun rogue-type concepts I've played with, though I suppose there's not really many other multiplayer rogue-type games of note out there, either.

I guess in a game like this, you really don't want to piss your healer off. xD

It always seemed counter-intuitive, yeah :P

My wife and I used to play DDO pretty hardcore back in the day. We logged in a couple months ago to play a bit, it is overwhelming how much stuff was added but it was still a lot of fun, and everything is free atm....
I still have a level 90 guild on Kyhber, a good friend has been more active than I so she has been running it. It's pretty empty anymore but you'd be more than welcome to join. I don't often play the game anymore but never know might get back into it.

Khyber and Orien always were good for guilds. Kyber was one of my secondaries (as opposed to primary or tertiary), so I should have some decent toons on there (ie, TRed them a few times). I'd definitely welcome the introduction, just to give it a look. :)

[I wonder just how rusty my gameplay skills have become? :X]

I just looked and it's pretty empty, only 3 or 4 of us in the guild and none really active. =(

Of course you'd be welcome but seems we've come a long way from doing all guild shroud runs.

I went without playing for about 3 years or so, was rusty as hell and still have no idea what is the best build or gear anymore. My old builds still seem to work and are still pretty fun. I haven't played in probably a month tho.

Most of the builds I found online are out of date. I would think about joining you guys, anyway, except that I'm on Thelanis.

Doesn't seem like it.

Presently, Thelanis is the default starting server for new players [it rotates over time] so it's likely to be more active at lower levels. Further, going off comments in the promotion thread, it seems several SGers ended up there as well. Not sure about whether or not an SG guild can be managed, but that seems like the best server for establishing SG-based connections, going off what has currently been posted, as well as being oriented towards new players. Meanwhile, while I'm maining Khyber, I do have toons on every server. Given that, Thelanis seems recommendable at the moment to any SGers looking to join the game.

That said, the servers are a hot mess at the moment [as of last Wednesday], so I'd recommend waiting until they fix the current stability issues before making an introduction into the game. As the servers currently are, the game likely isn't going to encourage anyone to stick around and keep playing. :S

As of this morning, the servers seem much improved. There are still a few issues, but at least chat and the friends list seem to be back up, again.

My main problem is that work is keeping me too busy to play, this month. I have to make money while I can, and I only have employment through August, so gaming is way down on my list of priorities until September.
