No. Too much money
Maybe

Keep in mind this is the 'Pro Edit' version, missing a few features of the 'full' Pro edition. Confusing marketing

Seems like only some preset filters and a QoL feature. Upgrading from edit to pro is still cheaper than buying pro in the first place.

I don't believe there's an upgrade option. This is typical with humble bundled software

The key that Humble gives you won't work when you put it in the upgrade box on the Vegas site?
The bundle page and the system requirements support page don't say anything about that.

Me too! I've spent a lot of time on "Dance eJay", my first musical creations when I was in high school ^^
For a long period I've tried to put my hands on "Rock eJay" and when I finally succeed, I lost interest...

And keep in mind it's because the new v15 is out. Also strange. Go to the site and select the v15 Pro Edit new purchase: now $149 from the regular $498 price.

Now select an upgrade to the v15 pro edit version... now $149 from the regular $896 price!

Anybody know how close Pro Edit is to Movie Studio? I really liked the trial of Movie Studio and wanted to buy it when it went on sale (but the Steam version looked inferior so I didn't get that when it was on sale).

Well, Pro Edit is like $500 and Movie Studio is $50, which should say something about them comparatively. You can see the differences here:

At least for Vegas Pro, it seems reinstallable as long as you have the key.

Finally a pretty decent software bundle from HB!

Although I have an Adobe CC subscription for Premiere Pro and am very comfortable with the interface and tools, monetarily it feels like it's a little overkill for most of my projects and $20 for a stab at a decent prosumer-level non-linear video editor that could cut my dependency on the Adobe subscription model for a few years is most welcome.

Also, the Stranger Things synths in the PWYW tier look like they'd be a lot of fun to play around with for an old 80's nostalgia junkie like me :)

Edit: as an aside, did anyone else notice that HB has changed the default slider for "Humble Tip" to 35% now?! I guess that's an IGN directive... I'm pretty sure it used to be set to 15% as default. Just a heads up to those that might care about allocating more of their money to the developers and/or charities.

It's only on this bundle. The MangaGamer bundle still defaults to 20% Humble for me.

I already grabbed the bundle, but your post was still very much of interest. Thanks for that!

After reading your recommendation, I'll definitely be giving Davinci Resolve a spin too, I think between Resolve and Vegas and some of the other free alternatives out there I'm sure I'll be able to find something that works well enough for my current needs. Then I can use some of that sweet Adobe CC subscription moola for more exciting things like hardware and camera gear upgrades.

Cool :) I can't completely rid myself of the Adobe subscription as I still have the photography bundle (PS and LR) that I depend on too much but having a non-sub based alternative to Premiere is liberating.

Still haven't found time/energy to get that group stuff going that I once mentioned half an eon ago, though πŸ˜•

My photo editing needs have been fairly minimal, so I've been doing fine with a much older version of a box-licensed Photoshop up till now. I may actually look into moving to GIMP or another open source alternative though as I think they may have exceeded my old PS version's capabilities by now.

and yeah, I did actually get one night where I thought a little about doing some parent-centric game reviews and laid out a few ideas for an accompanying website, but then winter holiday busy mode struck. That's the whole problem with being a parent and getting personal projects done... when you actually have some time to do it you realize you are exhausted and just want to relax!

I'm pretty much stuck with Adobe for photography (I make time-lapses, for example, and there's nothing better suited to the task) but here's a comparison of 10 serious Adobe alternatives that I still found interesting.

For actual professional editing I recommend Affinity Designer (image editor) and Lightworks (video editor).

Lightworks is even free, they limit your export options, though (to 720p and 1080p .mp4).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I briefly considered Lightworks when I no longer had access to Premiere some years ago, but the 1080p (it was only 720p at the time) limitation was a dealbreaker. I've transitioned completely to Davinci Resolve which supports up to 2160p in the free version in the meantime, and I'm very happy with it (see my post below for details).

FYI: If you're looking for a powerful, serious production level video editing suite but are tight on funds, my recommendation is to skip this and just get (arguably, probably, most likely...) better, free alternatives instead.

Blackmagic Design Davinci Resolve is a completely free, fully fledged video editing suite that evolved from the industry standard colour grading software. Its colour grading features are second to none (Hollywood productions routinely use it), to the extent that it isn't uncommon for pros to edit in Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro X and then roundtrip to Resolve for the colour grading. The free version has 90% the functionality of the 300 dollar Studio version including the legendary tracker (seriously, this thing tracks like a beast, it easily ranks among the best of them out there) [the paid Studio version includes some pro goodies like team collab integration, noise removal and some advanced stuff] and version 14 just added the hugely capable Fairlight audio engine. If you're coming from Premiere or FCP X, you won't have trouble settling in the actual editing timeline itself, although if you're new to colour grading there is a learning curve (a very flexible node-based workflow vs. more traditional layer based) but it's well worth it. Invest a few hours in some free tutorials (easy to find on Youtube) and get cracking. The downsides are that all this power demands some serious resources: an SSD for your media and media cache is practically mandatory, the more CPU cores you can throw at Resolve the better, and your GPU should be no slouch either. if you have under 2GB of VRAM you will probably have a bad time, better are 4GB or more. You need to sign up with your email address (and check for manual updates periodically) but I wouldn't hesitate to say that this is the best freeware deal out there that I know of. (Note that there's also Blackmagic Fusion if you're looking for a free motion graphics suite/Adobe After Effects alternative).

HitFilm Express also comes highly recommended, although I haven't used the editing suite proper but I grabbed the free OpenFX effects for integration into Resolve, which are certainly nice to have. You may need to sign up or retweet their page or something to get the software but that's bearable.

I actually own Vegas 14 already, I didn't use it extensively but it's nice and quick enough (media playback is smooth, although media management is flaky). The motion tracking is a joke compared to Resolve or Premiere, though. I didn't dig enough to see if it offers anything substantial that the two others above don't, but I personally do not feel the need to resort to it at all. That may be different for your particular needs or preferences (especially if you're looking at this bundle to also get the music production goodies) but I thought I might get this out there for those on the fence.

Has anyone redeemed the keys yet? Because according to the MAGIX website, a lot of licenses includes other softwares.
For instance:

  • Music Maker 80s: includes 3 soundpools + 1 virtual instrument of your choice. Do you really choose these?
  • Web Designer: includes PC Check & Tuning + Photo Manager Deluxe + Fastcut. Do you get those too?
  • Photo & Graphic Designer: includes PC Check & Tuning + Photo Manager Deluxe + Panorama Studio. Do you get those too?

The Web Designer installer includes an option to install Photo Manager Deluxe. No idea for the others. I have yet to reveal my keys, but I'm planning to refund it. A majority are web-installers that are getting no response from MAGIX servers.

I wasn't able to fix it. I checked my firewall settings, disabled AV, contacted Humble support who couldn't help me, but did say MAGIX servers had major issues the first day, but it wasn't working for me 2 days after. MAGIX won't offer support on Humble versions, either, they won't accept your license for support.
