EDITEDIT: I FORGOT DRAGON AGE: ORIGINS AND 2, I HAVE THEM ON ORIGIN THOUGH

A lot of these games are from indie bundles or the winter sale, and I haven't touched them, since I only just recently got a good gaming laptop. So yeah, I'd love if people could pick the top few they'd recommend to start with!

I've just done with Dead Space. It is epic. It remembers me good old Riddley Scott's "Alien". Play it only at night with headphones on Hard difficulty for better effect. Good luck, you'll need it.

Deus Ex series if you call yourself a gamer at all. Kotor is already incredibly good, but it's dated so I see no reason not to put it off any longer.

Start with games that are short and/or take up to much space in hard drive.

Here is a list for you imo that will make it fun and great.

1- Nightsky
2- Dead Space 1
3- Puzzle Agent 1
4- Bastion
5- Amnesia
6- Puzzle Agent 2
7- Dead Space 2
8- Space Pirates and Zombies
9- Batman Arkham Asylum
10- Half Life 1
11- Psychonauts
12- Trine
13- Half Life 2/2.1/2.2
14- Batman Arkham City
15- Skyrim or Deus Ex Human Rev or Kotor or Legend of Grimrock (basicly something with rpg elements and will take a long time to complete)

Imo this list will make things interesting all the time , you wont get bored out of a game genre , you will play the sequel of the game you have played before just as the first one sinks in to your memory.

There are some AAA titles i skipped as i think this 15 game list should occupy you enough for now :D

I'm shocked nobody has mentioned Steam Roulette yet. That said I vote for Gish, because it sucks and you might as well get it over with.

Start with the first one you bought, and make your way forward.

Or start with the last one you bought and make your way backward. That's what I first wanted to suggest, but buying new games interferes with this.

Depends on what kind of game you're willing to play, but here are my suggestions in alphabetical order:

  • Cave Story+: Awesome oldschool platformer. Quite hard at times but fun.
  • LA Noire: A game about crime scene investigation and interrogations. It's a little repetitive at times since it's quite linear, but it has great voice acting, good cases to solve and a remarkable story.
  • Legend of Grimrock: Similar to Ultima Underworld but with modern graphics. Dark, claustrophobic and loaded with secrets meant to be found only by those with the best perceptive skills. Really great if you're into RPGs.
  • Magicka: One of the wackiest and most innovative games I've played lately. Somewhat buggy, but filled with humor and fun.
  • Psychonauts: It's basically a 3D platformer, but it has combat, skills and a level-up system that unlocks new powers as well. Funny moments, very memorable characters and one of the best stories I had the honor of playing.
  • Serious Sam: Games about non-stop shooting, awesome hilarious secrets, more shooting, gorgeous and huge environments and even more shooting. You sure do shoot a lot in these games with a great array array of weapons, and they're the best at it. Also, it has great co-op, it's a blast!

Also, since you haven't played the Half-Life series yet, try to wait until they announce HL3's release date, that will spare you much suffering. Hope this helps!
