@Rogue-likes. :)
RTWP is real-time-with-pause, which traditionally covered games like Baldur's Gate, but has come to be used across several games, like We Are Dwarves and Doorkickers, as well. While their genres are different, they all have a similar vibe to FTL's pause and queue combat gameplay.
Space sims (also known as space flight simulators) are any games that allow you to experience (usually 3D) space combat. They're pretty different from FTL in gameplay, but in terms of overall theme, they're closest in matching to the single-ship space vibe [and that 'progress planet to planet while upgrading your ship' vibe is very strong in them, hence the association with FTL's design].

FTL is officially a rogue-lite, but RTWP and Space Sim definitely strike me as the two genres that'd be most associated to it, otherwise.
Space strategy is incredibly broad, and being strategy (strategy is anything large-scale, tactics is anything small-scale), it'd likely be an empire-building game, or board-game-like in gameplay. So other than "space" being a similar theme, they'd have nothing in common with FTL. Similarly, RTS (Real-Time Strategy) is also a strategy genre, so it has that same massive difference in gameplay from FTL, but being fully real-time, it's generally a genre more based in large scale micro-management and quick reflexive responses- FTL really doesn't demand anything of the sort from its players.

Certainly your prerogative to use whatever you like as your basis (I know several users here that'd gleefully use Barbie games as their point of reference), but they weren't the genres that I personally would have gone with, in terms of finding people who appreciate FTL's genre.

FTL is a pretty fun game, by the way, have you tried it yourself? :)

What's really confusing is that TRPGs (Tactical RPGs, like Final Fantasy Tactics) are called SRPGs in Japan (Simulation RPGs). But in English, SRPG is short for Strategic RPG- a rather niche genre, but it has some games.

That in turn has caused a lot of Steam users to incorrectly tag Tactical RPGs as Strategy RPGs [much like how people who don't know the difference between Team PvP and Co-op like to mistag Team PvP games as being Co-op -.-; (Co-op is Team PvE- multiple players against a non-human opponent, while Team PvP is multiple players against other multiple players). ]

So no worries, people get confused on the specifics pretty regularly (especially given that most people use Steam for gaming these days, and games are regularly mistagged there). It's even more of a mess when you get into trying to pick apart music sub-genres- geesh. :P

If you like FTL, you should check out Convoy and Death Skid Marks, they're both supposed to play very similarly (though I've yet to get copies, so I couldn't say first-hand). (Bounty Train is a bit more of a strategy/trading game, but it's supposed to have some FTL-style elements as well.)
Hand of Fate is also a pretty awesome rogue-lite, it blends dungeon-crawling, CCG collecting, and Batman: Arkham series style combat (with a splash of Dark Souls). It's surprisingly accessible, given its complex blend of elements. :)

But yeah- when you think strategy, think games like the Civilization series or any RTS game, with large scale combat and complicated resource interactions. When you think tactics, think stuff like Final Fantasy Tactics- a single small team on a small battlefield, with no economic/civilization-building/etc elements involved.

I don't think there's a space-based RTWP yet, but the pausing and making tactical decisions element is very similar, so you may enjoy those regardless. Space Sims tend to be really involving, but in many ways they're fairly similar to FTL in general concept (and if your basis for choosing games is based on 'Space' as a theme, then it's definitely the genre you probably want to explore most).
Mech games are a bit similar to Space Sims, in turn, though they're less focused on exploration and freedom of movement, and more on more involved machine building- so in a way, a space sim that loses its exploration in favor of a racing game's depth of car customization. :'P

'course, then you got space sim mech games, which may or may not have the depth of customization that mech games have, but otherwise can really blend the best of both genres- giving you an interesting blend of space flight and mech-based combat. :)
