I don't have a singular favourite, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Civilization, Captain Claw and Revolt were really important ones for me :)

People don't associate it with PC, but technically, it would be Metal Gear Solid for me. I did play the PC port and with keyboard controls too. (It was so good I just got sucked in while testing the game on keyboard, that I didn't care to setup a control).
Not including that, I guess it would be Half-Life. I really love the level flow of the Half-Life games, makes you really feel like your on a grand journey.
I also really enjoyed Hitman: Codename 47 this year. It's very janky, but it's cool to see that a game so old was able to nail the whole social stealth gameplay in the modern Hitman games so well even back then. Being given a very complex hit job and figuring out not just how to solve it, but also the best way to do it (because there's multiple ways of reaching your goal) is so fun.

This Deus Ex among the top favorites, yes. Music, atmosphere, narrative, level design, different ways to play, multiple endings...everything was great

For classic it would have to be diablo 1, and heroes of might and magic 2. For modern games easily slay the spire and hades. Indies rule these days. Hollow knight was also amazing.

From that time? Arcanum as my favorite game of all times (I have a link for all the hd&hq patches if you do), Thief 1 and 2, System Shock 2, Fallout 2, Populous the Beginning, Summoner (a bit generic but dear to my heart), Civ III, SC BroodWar, myth II, Rainbox Six 1 and 2, Homeworld, The Longest Journey, NOLF, Zeus, Midtown madness was fun, I enjoyed Heavy metal FAKK2 (Tomb Raider clone basically, but more adult) a lot even if I didn't get much of the story until I watched the movie much later... first Hitman game... Sea Dogs 1... just off the top of my head. Sorry If I repeated something. Those were really good years, or I got really old, lol.

System Shock (and 2), Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Civilization, Quest for Glory (the whole series), Mega Man X (it was on PC too back then), Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Ultima Underworld (I really loved many of the Ultima games, but this one probably aged the best), Deus Ex...

Silent Hill all the way

Strife: Quest for the Sigil (often just called Strife) or Strife: Veteran Edition (on Steam/GOG/etc.) is my all time favorite game which I finished many times (the sigil of the game is also my avatar). Sadly it isn't well known or loved.

Hard to choose just one, either StarCraft or System Shock 2

I haven't played that many pre-2001 PC games. Mostly just Nintendo and a bit of Playstation. I did play System Shock 2 in 2019 and the original Half-Life earlier this year. Out of those two games though, I'd say System Shock 2.
