I already own most of it, but I entered a couple. I mostly did it to try your crazy puzzle. 😀 Very creative, and old school. Reminded me of sketching stuff on graph paper so that I could write code to generate my cool CGA splash screens back in the 80s. lol

compass is pointing to the west so I must be coming from the east and I go south

compass is pointing northeast What? Why is it pointing northeast? There must be a reason for this!
... and I continue my journey, creating a map while taking note of the directions the compass is pointing in
But the directions were not relevant for finding this final giveaway. Did you spin the compass randomly as an additional layer of difficulty for map creation, or is there an underlying pattern to it?
to be honest, i only introduces the spinning compass in the last stage, while adding description to each GA, that was not my original intention, just wanted to spice things up even more.
like MilConDoin pointed out here, direction of the compass really isnt all that necessary which i didnt even consider..., same like you concluded. so, in answer to your question: yes, random as heck like everything on this site, mind/bending layer to the puzzle...
