So you have to connect to the internet, and you have to attach every game to your account. Want to play it on somebody else's account? You get to buy the game again- no lending.

Shitty right? I absolutely agree.

But what I don't get is how people are criticizing this so rabidly, as if it's the absolute worst thing.... And then going to check out the hot new deals on Steam. With a straight face. How does that work?

Every little detail that came out about this "pre-owned fee" made me think "Oh, so like Steam". Hell, ever buy a physical copy of a Steam DRM game? You pop the case open, punch in the code, link it to steam and probably never even take the disc out and it goes on a shelf where it sits forever. That's all they're saying will be done with Xbox discs.

Maybe I can be won over but honestly it sounds completely hypocritical.

+1. Also everyone loves Steam due to the constant massive discounts and offers running. Plus Steam seems to be designed to make life easier, not just a "DRM to get in the way and annoy you" platform.

Because PC games have been like that for a ridiculously long time. Perhaps the largest appeal of consoles is used/borrowed games and ability to play offline when you want to.

If by ridiculously long time you think less than 10 years, then yes. Also, Steam was not widely popular until 2009/2010, and there are people who hate Steam as a form of DRM even today, and avoid buying any Steamworks titles. So, in a way, it will take some time for people to get to know the new xbox. I don't care, I like playing on PC.

Because you buy a console for its price and ability to buy used games (sell them too). Now you have an underpowered pc, with less uses than a pc, with no ability to sell your games + other crap.

I do agree. I think they'll regret the decision big time. I was pretty hype for the new Xbox myself but felt like most of the changes were bad ones. I don't have a stick up my ass over the entertainment/kinect aspect like some people seem to, but overall as far as features it was underwhelming. All that piqued my interest was the built in PVR (Which was a "kind of cool") and the "pre-owned fee" (which was a "man that's kind of bullshit")

I would've still probably bought one, if the "fee" was really a fee and not just buying the whole damn game again. $5 to get a new game license? Sure, I buy used rarely enough for that to work. But I can't believe the audacity that their "fee" is a new copy.

It's mostly cost. Console games might hit $30-40 after two years. We can get triple A games on release day for that much with other games as preorder bonuses like the crazy Bioshock Infinite deals. Then there's the indie bundles and regular sales where you can get games from $0.50-5.00 each

Interesting points brought up all around. Obviously that's the way PC has worked for years, but that doesn't really make it okay in contrast to what Xbox is doing.

I'm really hoping all the rumors about being able to sell/trade Steam games comes true. Funny thing is, Xbox One is supposed to allow the same. They didn't reveal anything specific at all about that though.

In my eyes the whole draw and point of even having a console is the simplicity of it. Requiring installs/online and making it near impossible to re-sell your old games completely defeats the purpose of the console.

Also the Xbox is a closed digital market completely controlled by Microsoft with outside physical retailers that don't discount for crap. This means crappy sales and useless used games, which means high prices all around basically.

Literally the only reason why anyone should buy an Xbox One (shudders at the name) is for the exclusives, and that is only for the super hardcore fans of those exclusives.

Steam installs on a large variety of systems. Now or ten years from now.
I'm guessing that ten years from now, the Xbox One games will still be playable only on the Xbox One. When the Xbox Two rolls around, you still have to keep the One around or abandon all those purchases (at least, with Microsoft's current no-backwards-compatibility stance).

Still, you do make a good point.
The only consoles I've ever owned though are a Vic-20 and the Wii.

[edit]
Also, traditionally, consoles are much more "social" than PCs -- more in-person interaction. Think about how often you may have gone to someone's house or had people over to play a video game -- was that on a PC or a console?
MS seems to want to destroy that. That is stupid.
(The lines there are slowly getting blurred (hello Big Picture mode! what's up, MAME!), but in the end, your office work is still on the PC.)

You cant resell your Steamgames. Microsoft rarely gives any sales on the same massive scope Steam does. Games I bought when the original Xbox was around are still in my account and playable now. Meanwhile Microsoft is refusing to do any backwards compatibility.

I'm willing to concede physical copies if digital only versions are fractions of the price. Won't get that kind of deal from MS tho.

And like others have said, the draw of consoles is the ability to just turn them on, they play games and work. Consoles are more and more just becoming crippled PCs, adding more complications, and taking away the simplicity.

Personally I could care less about not being able to play used games. It makes sense to me. I'll be interested to see how this affects piracy rates on consoles though. I don't intend on buying the system but what I feel the most people will be upset about is the mandatory internet connection and lack of backwards compatibility. If you ask me, the only reason it doesn't have backwards compatibility is so that microsoft can sell you all your old games AGAIN on a built-in marketplace.

are you serious about the used game thing? how can it make sense that I pay for a physical copy of a game and never get to bring it over to a friend's place? And if he ends up buying that game back from me, I would get nothing out of him because of guilt since he has to pay microsoft to play an OWNED game anw. Basically, what microdick doing right now is preventing you from getting out of your couch, going to your friend's place, and making you watch NFL even if you're a Brit or Asian.

about piracy, just build good anti-piracy software, they didn't update the firmware twice or more every year for nothing

Ps:/ I have been playing the 360 since it came out and I'll probably jump to PS4 if Valve doesn't make any announcement about the steam box before this year's holiday season

There's a huge difference between consoles and PC. The price of content. I know that if I had x dollars, it would be better spent on pc games than a $60 console game. Without used games, the Xbox one wont be able to compete with pc sales (especially, with Steam, Amazon, GMG, Humble bundles...) Ownership is still something every company is working on.

I think the question to be asked that will give you the answer that you seek is, who inherits digital media when someone dies?

It seems left field, but it leads to the important question about ownership.

it's because on consoles one of the big advantage is lending ans selling used games.
steam has other advantages and is common knowledge that this is not one of them, and this is alleviated with the steam sales, and the big competition between a lot of stores in pc gaming that is happening now.

Many console people buy a game thinking how much are they gonna get when they sell it, so a 30$ game they may sell it at 15$. In Pc, you just buy the game at 15$ when there's a 50% off or more.

I guess people are concerned they are changing the playing field? yeah maybe microsoft will make deals like steam does, we'll just have to see

Well, for myself personally, it is a pricing issue. I'd like to use Borderlands 2 as an example of PC vs XboxOne;

  • If you were looking to buy a copy of Borderlands 2 for 360, you would be paying 40$ (current price on Xbox Marketplace). If you wanted to get that game used, you could probably find it for 15-20$, but if the "pre-owned" fee was already in effect, then you would need to pay full price (as per the current information on the fee).
  • If you wanted to get that same game for PC, however, then you could easily get the game for about 20$ through one of the countless sales. Even a 10$ pricepoint wouldn't be too hard to find (Steam recently had it 75% off). Hell, getting the game and all of the DLC would only set you back 20$ in some circumstances.

Everyone's freaking out because if the Xbox One sells, Sony and Nintendo will follow in their footsteps and implement their own strict DRM. It's up to all of us to not support their endeavors to screw us.

It's nothing like Steam because...

  1. Steam isn't PC gamers' only option. Users buy from Steam of their own volition. It's not forced on them.
  2. Steam prices reflect DRM, that's why the games are so ridiculously inexpensive.
  3. Steam has offline mode.
  4. Steam's DRM wasn't unprecedented when it was released. PC games have had serial keys for decades. They're far older than consoles.
  5. No used games means Microsoft controls the prices and not the market.
  6. I'm not on no damn probation. I shouldn't have to "check in" with Xbox Live so they can authenticate my game to make sure I'm not a thief. 'Borrowing games = piracy' to Microsoft.
  7. Steam is free, Xbox Live isn't and it still shows you ads.

The entire point of consoles is supposed to be convenience. Take that away and all you have left is an obscenely overpriced, weak HTPC. Please don't buy an Xbox One if it has these measures in it.

Your point number seven is something that already annoys the heck out of me. Bought a second hand xbox 360 not that long ago, got xbox live, and have a @%^&* home scren/dashboard with music/video/picture/adds/whatever that I don't really want to see. The presentation of the xbox one had the same kind of dashboard, so for that reason alon I simply will not buy the xbox one. Why give me all these options that I have to keep on scrolling throught when I want to go to settings and back when I only want to use it for gaming ffs?

So unless they change that, I'm not even gonna consider buying it.

Well, its something that might be slightly annyoing if you dont want to use any of its features, but I cant really imagine why it would stop anyone from playing.. this is just how consoles are nowadays. The good old "Insert game, turn on and PLAY" just doesn´t really exist anymore.. its the same with PS3 and Wii and even handhelds like the DS and PS Vita.
In the X360-Options you can turn on the "Start game when I insert the disc"-Option and if I remember correctly, there should also be an option to automaticly start the disc when you turn on the console.
Hope that helps ^^

While I agree with you on most points, I have to disagree on three of them:

1: For "Steamworks native"-Games (Like all the Valve-Games, Civilization 5, Skyrim and many more) it actually IS PC gamers´ only (legal) option. There is no non-steam choice.

4: Old CD-Keys are nothing like account-bound games. You where able to play with used ones just fine and it was perfectly legal to give them away.

7: Xbox-Live itself is free and will surely stay this way.. Xbox-Live GOLD isn´t free and is needed for Multiplayer and some extra stuff, but I doubt it will be needed to play your games in single-player-mode on Xbox One. While I dont want protect Microsofts policy with XBL-Gold or anything as I agree that this sucks, it just has nothing to do with topic of forced-online-DRM or the fact that games will be bound to your account. It just stays the way it is on X360 with not-account-bound Discs: You need it only to play multiplayer.

That said: +1 to everything else ^^

Your missing one point here: You have to pay to play the Xbox One (which means a subscription fee or you can't use it period) and it has to be connected to the internet 24/7 (this has already been confirmed). The point is this Console has 0% chance of making any sells whatsoever.

So there will be no free Live-Membership anymore? o_O Hard to belive Microsoft would be THAT stupid, but if this is true, I have to retract my statment on point #7 of course.

If they really do this, I guess it wont be long until the free Membership returns.. they tried to force the payed Gold-Membership for Multiplayer in "Games for Windows Live" too in the beginning, but it hurt the sales a lot so they where quick to change it to be free for everyone.. theres at least some hope here ^^

Steam doesn't require you to log in every 24 hours, pay to use their services (aside from games and dlc obviously) and doesn't limit your ability to modify your games.

It also doesn't have an irreplaceable hard drive built-in nor cause your system to lack backwards compatibility with older games.

People tolerate Steam because games are cheap on it. That's really the bottom line. There's no need to buy used because the game is bound to have a sale or price drop before the used price on the console version is reasonable. Since console games don't tend to price drop as quickly, many will buy used because they want to save some money.

If the consoles actually offered some competition with game pricing, people would accept a lack of used games just as much as we do with Steam.

1 decade ago

Comment has been collapsed.

What the hell? Steam was never about the prices, not for me at least. I got to admit that buying games that are on pc and console, it's cheaper to always buy it for the pc, and you usually need a good gaming rig to play said games with decent quality.

Back in the days where steam was mostly valve games sky rocketing throughout the world, i highly doubt that concept of "it's all about the prices" was the original reason for people to join steam, y'know.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The difference is simple. PC games tend to be cheaper, but in the end you still can login on the same Steam account on multiple computers. I however will agree that Steam is no better, but what makes it difference for xbox is that it isnt the only console on the market while Steam is the only obvious choice for online game purchases (there is others, but Steam is the common choice).

1 decade ago

There's always the argument that console games are more expensive to cover the revenue lost by used game sales. Flawed as that argument is, with the one-time registration fee one would hope the prices for the games drop accordingly.

I'm really more annoyed by lack of backwards compatibility (still not too much of a problem), and the lack of interesting announcements game-wise. For the last bit, I'll wait until the E3 and other shows before having a final opinion.

Well, Console games are not really expensive...Depends how you are buying them
I have seen NBK on retail cheaper..ALOT CHEAPER .. than it was on PSN. Same goes for Steam currently. I remember when MW3 came out, My friend got it cheaper for us in retail for like 10 dollars less.
Anyways, These days almost everything requires an internet and its probably because of the piracy too.
Everythings being pirated these days ... and i think its probably to reduce the piracy.
Also they want to make money on the other hand (Which is their main goal obviously) because its just like call of duty..No matter how much you criticize it..most of you are still going to be seen at gamestop etc with money to get the game.
So yeah, Making some $$$ and thats all.
