So you have to connect to the internet, and you have to attach every game to your account. Want to play it on somebody else's account? You get to buy the game again- no lending.

Shitty right? I absolutely agree.

But what I don't get is how people are criticizing this so rabidly, as if it's the absolute worst thing.... And then going to check out the hot new deals on Steam. With a straight face. How does that work?

Every little detail that came out about this "pre-owned fee" made me think "Oh, so like Steam". Hell, ever buy a physical copy of a Steam DRM game? You pop the case open, punch in the code, link it to steam and probably never even take the disc out and it goes on a shelf where it sits forever. That's all they're saying will be done with Xbox discs.

Maybe I can be won over but honestly it sounds completely hypocritical.

For me its pretty simple and you used the magic word yourself: Steam-Deals! I would never pay full price for a game that has to be activated online in any way. And the more restrictive the DRM is, the lower is the price I am willing to pay for a game.

Steam has earned a lot of trust and respect, their activation-process and general DRM-Concept is rather customer-friendly and the prices are just awesome. If Microsoft can achieve the same over time, I will not be complaining about this any longer.. but looking at what microsoft conciders "great prices" on the X360 so far and the general pricing of console games here in Germany, I doubt they will be able to win me over anytime soon.. and of course the Xbox One has other big problems too.

So far I probably not gonna buy it (even though I love my X360), but we have to see how it all plays out over the years.

Consoles were about simplicity, now they're turning them into overpriced, low-end PCs with endless DRM in the way.

How hard it can be to make a gaming console that actually plays games, and stops trying to be a little bit of everything. If I get a console, I just want to pop the disc in and play, I don't want to make a damn smoothie with it while gorillion ads play on the screen and forces me to use facebook and other shit. God damn, let me play.

In steam you really can bring your games with you to your friends place. Just log into your account while you're there. I doubt the system will be as easy on xbox as "Oh you don't have the new halo? I'll just log into my account and we can play mine" the way it does on steam.

Also, I'm not sure if any of you have ever had "xbox people" as guests recently. They don't want to sign into any machine other than their own. I've had huge parties before and none of 20+ people were willing to donate their xbox live account to the cause of online play for the night. I don't get it.

tl;dr people hate on xbox because it is bad

I'm pretty sure it will be like that. If you are on your account on someones Xbox, the game will work

Yeah, thats already confirmed. On X360 we do this all the time (I usually have my account with me on an USB-Stick, but it works fine over the Internet too) and on the Xbox One it will stay that way.. the games you buy and activate are not bound to your console, but to your account and you can login with your account on a friends Xbox without a problem.
In this aspect the new system actually has its advantages, since you are able to redownload your games to the other console if you forgot to bring the disc.. just as in Steam.

Cool, the only thing I don't like is that if my brother wanted to play one of my games, he would need my account meaning I couldn't play anything at the same time. Or am I wrong in saying that, I'm not sure

No, this probably won´t work, unless they use the same licence-system they are using for X360-Downloads right now, wich is very unlikely.

Right now, when you buy a game, this game is licensed for your account AND the console you are using to buy it. This is acutally a very consumerfriendly system, as you are able to play the game anywhere whith your account, but any other account can play it on your Xbox (even while you are logged in to another Xbox and playing the same game. So right now, you are able to do the following:

  • Log into your brothers Xbox with your account, buy and download a game.
  • Log off and your brother will be able to play the game on his Xbox with any account he likes.
  • Log into your own Xbox, redownload the game.
  • You will be able to play it on your own Xbox as long as your account is logged in and online.
  • You can even play Multiplayer together ;)

If this license-system stays the same on Xbox One and also applies to retail-games, that would be very nice and your brother would be able to play your games if you are activating them the right way ^^ But I really dont expect them to keep it this way.

I don't remember anything about being able to download the game online, I just remember them saying it could only be activated on one account. It seemed to imply that you'd have to reinstall the game off the disc every time.

Ah yeah, I re-read my sources and while they imply that this will be possible indeed, it is not clearly stated by Microsoft. My guess is, that they´re trying to merge online-distribution with retail-ditribution just like steam does and in that case, it will surely be posible to reinstall games via download even if you bought the disc, but you are right, there´s no 100% clear info on that right now.
Worst case: You still need to bring the disc to play at a friends Xbox, wich isn´t too bad since installation will be quicker anyway.. but it would be a nice bonus to be able to download the games if you don´t have your disc with you.

Unless you can't get internet, in which case, playing your game on your account doesn't work when on another Xbox. (I have personally experienced this recently.)

Console is not Steam. Used games always worked, PC had CD-keys for a long time now. People don't like changes like that.
Another thing is, they could just make the used games not work. It feels like they only want money. Who would buy used game if activation costs 100% of the price(IIRC, they confirmed that) of the new game? No one. No one would sell them too, since it would make even less sense. I wouldn't take used games even for free.

Xbox1 isn't really console anymore, I guess. More like TV decoder with games. Even Halo became a TV series.

Nah, it's one console less in the market for them... Don't know if ps4 will also follow the same footsteps as microsoft for this no reselling business. If they do, then it most likely will be open untill the current gen consoles get discontinued from the market, and that could happen in a couple of years.

As of now, the PlayStation 4 is confirmed to play used games:

Shuhei Yoshida, the leader of the Sony Worldwide Studios, confirms that his company has no plans to block used games for the upcoming PlayStation 4 home console, despite earlier rumors.

Speaking to Eurogamer, the executive says, “Used games can play on PS4.” He adds, “That’s the general expectation by consumers. They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that’s my expectation.”

The difference between the Xbox and Steam doing the same thing is that Steam introduced this years ago, even then there weren't any used games anyway for PC.

Xbox is completely different, people who don't play or want the same game forever trade it in for a new game, now they can't. Microsoft SHOULD have eased console gamers into this system, but since they barged in without any lube, they are feeling the pain as well.

Steam games or PC games in general are fucking cheap if you compare them to Console Games.Yes the release price is same but PC games go on sales more often as are available on more sources. Also when you release a game on a pc you are not paying Sony or Microsoft on top of all the other things. So Pc games are cheaper and because they are so cheap most people dont fuss over if they can sell their used games or not.

A recent example would be i guess the Hitman Absolution which was $5 on amazon a few days ago and it was $7.5 on Gamersgate a month ago.Do you think that console version of the game has ever been sold for that low price? Also how much are you going to sell your $5 or $7.5 game?

If you wanted to sell the newly released AAA title after you have completed it, just dont buy it on release date anymore.Unless the game is like Skyrim , Witcher 2 , Fallout , Borderlands games where gameplay is over 50 hours(more like 150+) + mods (which consoles doesnt have) there is no reeason to buy those at release date.

The Whole Steam vs Xbox One thing is stupid.Steam/PC games go on sale quite a lot often because its sold heavly on digital and there are tons of places that you can buy.For Xbox One you can either get phsycal copy of the game which increases the cost or there is only ONE place you can buy digital console games and that is the offical Store that you connect with your console.

Edit : Also there is whole "To Play Online Pay Us Monthly" thing with Xbox too which steam/pc games doesnt have unless its MMO.Console gamers are getting screwed hard by Microsoft imo.
