Well, my avast! free license will expire in 25 days, and I was wondering if MSE was any better.

Which one should I use next? Should I keep using avast! free or should I switch to MSE?

I also have Malwarebytes PRO, but the real time protection is disabled, as I wanted to stick with the avast! free one.

Help? Tips? Experience, please?

Stick with Avast. I've heard of the Microsoft anti virus software failing tests by some group known for testing such software. If you do decide to use it, don't use it as your only software. Avast and Microsoft MSE together can only help.

I heard those two were (when MSE came out) intended to work together, but not sure if it's like that anymore.

This is total nonsense. You should never ever install and use more than one anti-malware software (do not count on-demand only scanners into this)

I used to use a couple on an older PC of mine for extra protection, since if something was missed by one, there was still a chance the other would get it. Is there any reason it should be avoided?

They can counter each other, but as I said, the first version of MSE was meant not to be SO intrusive with avast!, so they could work together without being a massive pain in the ass.

Poor performance when running multiple scanners, but I think of it like washing your hands, wearing gloves, and taking antibiotics at the same time. Sure it's overkill, sure it's still more effective, but it's silly and hampers performance.

Not that I do any of the metaphor I outlined.

Okay, I suppose system performance can make sense. It wasn't a problem with that system at the time, it was only for going online, all my gaming was on another PC not connected to the internet.

Incorrect! MSE gets outstanding results in detection of viruses in all those tests performed by large antivirus testing companies. What you've "heard" is some false gossip, please don't spread unverified information. According to results I regularly check in computer magazines in my country where they publish such reports, MSE detection accuracy is just as good as for big antivirus software, and additionally... It's the ONLY tested antivirus software that got ZERO false positives in the tests (it didn't mistake any genuine file for a virus) . And I personally recommend MSE all the way. Don't install both. Stick with MSE only. Not only it's effective, but it's very lightweight and you won't even notice impact on your computer's performance. If you get Avast, you'll get a slower PC as a result. Yesterday I was watching somebody's stream and it started lagging terribly. Turns out it was his Avast suddenly updating virus database without a warning. MSE does it all quietly, although it works a bit slower. MSE is one of the few things Microsoft did right.

Thanks for the info, I've tried avast! for long enough I suppose, I will just switch to MSE to see how it works, and then go back if it doesn't convince me.

MSE was reported to have difficulties identifying zero-day viruses. But Microsoft is pretty quick with signature updates, so you shouldn't worry too much. If you do get infected by a zero-day virus, you should disconnect your PC from the Internet and destroy every piece of hardware you own as you probably have no clue what you're doing anyway.

lol, totally wasn't expecting that last bit, but yeah, two or more anti-viruses running at the same time generally means you have no fucking clue.

What I meant is that getting infected by a zero-day virus is almost impossible unless you deliberately browse highly suspicious websites in order to get infected. :P

MSSE, one of very few decent things to come from Microsoft.
Lightweight, yet tightly integrated into the OS without being obtrusive and doesn't give you a ton of false positives.

I tend to shun Microsoft's own offerings, but Microsoft Security Essentials really seems to have hit it out of the park.

Keeping a recent system backup, being aware of how trustworthy your program sources are, and running untrusted programs in a sandbox/VM environment will let you go without these programs.

You're either lucky, or smart.

Web of Trust and Adblock Plus both protect my browsing. You can also install many other AV/Spyware/Malware protection programs that include a browser plugin, but offer to leave it installed when you uninstall the core program. IIRC, Avast! and Spybot Search & Destroy both offer this.

I use MSE for a long time now (now called MS Defender, integrated into W8) and I havent seen one single virus/trojan/worm or whatever.
I'm not sure if it's that good or whether my whole desktop is already a host for all kind of malicious software without me knowing.

Out of the free AV options, Avast! and Microsoft Security Essentials are my favorites. Since MSE is more tightly integrated into the OS, I go with MSE. If you don't trust Microsoft, I recommend Avast! Free.

I'm a bit confused on how you have the pro version of malwarebytes, but you say it's disabled. Turn it on. I bought my lifetime protection on newegg cheap ---> This Link

I got the PRO version as a gift, but I disabled it so it didn't interfere with avast! as the real time protection of Malwarebytes PRO also offers anti-virus r.t. protection.

Final word: Use AVG Free (http://free.avg.com).

Avast was a good product 4 years ago, but not anymore. It detects viruses almost as well as AVG, but performs horribly (takes a LOT of system resources). Microsoft Security Essentials is just a horrible product.

Malwarebytes is a great products, but it is designed to detect and remove malware/spyware, not necessarily viruses/trojans. Use it in conjunction with AVG, not as a replacement.

Did you purposely switch names there, because AVG is the one using a tonne more resources and the only thing it detects more is false positive en hasn't been relevant in the last 4 years. Malwarebytes was already used seperately

I've done performance testing on both. Avast does a good job detecting but runs much slower and slows your system down more.

NOD32 6.0 :D

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's the stupidest idea ever. NOD32 = pay money for stuff Avast and MSE can do for free. If you said Kaspersky I would agree but not NOD32. NOD32 will give you more false possitives than Avast or MSE. Have used NOD32 some time ago - uses lots of resources and doesn't do shit.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well I've been using it since 2.x and I'm happy with it, I don't know about Avast but MSE is a lot worse than NOD32, it just can't detect anything.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, that's the whole point. Half or more of those NOD32 detections are false possitives. I have tested it on a few files NOD32 said were infected. Neither MSE, Avast or Kaspersky (had license for it that time) said anything. Only NOD32 were blocking those files.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I was talking about real deal trojans and malwares, MSE can't recognise some of them while NOD easily catch and kill. I don't care about false positives btw, since you can filter files and folders not to be deleted on advanced settings.

I know this because about 2-3 years ago when I installed Win7, and I tried to use MSE for a few months. When some nasty things like hangups/stutters were happening, MSE didn't detect anything but then I tried NOD32 (4.x I guess) it found more than 20 virus/trojan/malware/etc. lol

DO NOT EVER TRUST MSE
