If you made it so far here is the story..... I'm kinda a failing IT student(damned maths theory) and tomorrow got a test on Haskell(program language that i never heard before) and so my genius brain decided that I should not sleep tonight....Instead I should study....C++ and OOP(Object-oriented Programming) .So yeah...instead of playing games(the more games you have the lower is the chance to play any of them) . So I want to ask you if you had this kind of experience aka ....having insomnia and be ..productive .

Edit: Hooray...not a chance to have insomnia....I'm just too lazy to sleep.

I know that feeling....I failed my exams but somehow I manage to get to "I don't give a fuck" level at that time....and atm I just want to find somewhere job so I have to learn C++,OOP and something else to get hired... but meh..lazy and so many games to play...

Form a challenge for yourself. Create a goal, and try to work towards it. As in - try to think up a program you'd like to make, and try making it!

No worries about it..already working on a program but yet to turn it into something more complex

Being tired causes the electric impulses in the brain to fire slower as its still trying to shut down and process you can can only be a productive insomniac if your brain is high functioning

I'm not really feeling tired. It's just that I don't feel like sleeping when I can study something I want.

I have exams these days, I sleep for at least 4 hours a day, but during my English Language exam, I failed to go to sleep due to nervousness. So, utilizing that failure to sleep, I picked up a book, but still I didn't feel like, so played some Fallout. Well, why do something when you don't feel like? You'll be more productive when you think you are in mood of doing that stuff.

ill refrain from giving you my solution since its not very family friendly.(no its not fap fap fap...though similar)

of course theres other things you can do such as meditating(partially works for me), its really good if you manage to practice it, but since you need something asap i guess it wont work as well for you unless you manage to do it intuitively(you might as well look up online mantras to sleep, no kidding, they work)

another thing that lulled me into sleep in some of those insomniac nights was drinking hot milk & coffee, this of course is really weird but it has worked sometimes for me, no idea why, because...coffee...and sleep...well, they typically dont mix well(i dont recomend this since it might backfire and keep you from ever sleeping tonight)

other than that just go to bed and close your eyes in hopes for sleep to come.

and GL! god knows you need a good night sleep

Meditating could work in my hometown but here in the campus is kinda hard with all the damn noise(used to it but if I try to ignore it it hits like a train). Coffee works for me too...sometimes(when I'm tired and if I drink coffee...bam....sleeping like a baby) . tried already the one with closing eyes...for 30mins...nothing happened...I guess I was too lazy to sleep

Deciding not to sleep or being distracted from sleep is not the same as insomnia.

I had insomnia for a few months during my first year of college and it was terrible. It completely changed my outlook on sleep. I could almost never sleep, and when I could it was brief and at random times. I couldn't concentrate on anything and I was having minor hallucinations from the lack of sleep.

I would fall asleep for short intervals at involuntary times. Sometimes it was in class, one time it was on a table in the middle of the food court of the busiest, noisiest building on campus.

One time I slept through a whole morning, standing up in the middle of my room. I had set an alarm so I wouldn't miss my afternoon class. My alarm clock started playing a song that I liked when it went off, so I listened through the whole song, thinking that I was lying down, before opening my eyes and falling over.

One time I fell asleep while trying to study after no sleep for almost four days, and my alarm went off to let me know that I had to get ready to go take the test I had just failed to study for. I was conscious just long enough to stand up before I blacked out. I became conscious again and I was standing in front of my alarm clock. I turned it off and blacked out again. Then I was on the other side of my room taking my clothes off. Out again. Grabbing my towel. Out again. Getting into the shower (which was down the hall from my room, I didn't remember going there). Out again. Then I was hit by a blast of freezing cold water and slammed my body against the wall. I didn't black out again, but that was a very unpleasant awakening.

I ended up getting some over-the-counter sleep aids, which helped a bit. It was hard to sleep even with them and they gave me terrible hangovers though. Luckily the insomnia went away after a few months, I'm still not sure what caused it.

Mmm then I guess I overrated my condition though for last few days I hardly fall asleep. But thanks to your story now I know what to expect. Btw you think that too much of stress could cause your insomnia?

Stress could be the cause. You could try to find good ways to relax. I saw that everlonging suggested meditation. I'm sure you can find good ways to reduce stress if you search online. If that doesn't work you could try a sleep aid like I did.

Sorry my post was so long by the way. I figured you might find parts of it interesting or funny so I just kept adding to it.

Best way to relax is countryside/mountain but with the snow we have atm and being kinda busy lately makes it hard.Yet still manage to releave some of the stress while talking with my roommate.

Thank you for clarifying that to everybody.
You're awesome!
I'm saying that because i'm a lazy asshole and i usually go to sleep at 6-7 AM and wake up after launch, and when i'm not out, drinking, i'm usually logged on Facebook and stuff like that, and there's always some duche posting something about their insomnia at like 2AM so they look like badasses and it really pisses me off.
Sometimes i'd like to explain them what insomnia really is just like you did here but since i never actually had it, i'd end up sounding like them anyway.

I'm basically getting Bs and Cs right now in community college when I could easily be getting all As if I cared or did more than the bare minimum. I'm not really trying for a degree, I'm just going because it's something I fell I should be doing. I've never cared about my schoolwork and have always gotten mostly Bs, some As, and a couple Cs. I guess it's just hard to start trying when you never have before and you don't really care. I've basically been staying up until about 5 AM watching Twin Peaks the past couple days, after I mostly got my sleep habits under control. Luckily I can go to school forr a day even if I haven't slept and then just crash when I get home.

I could be getting Bs and As in my University since practice exam is easy but then you have to do theory and I just suck at it so I fail but then again...last finals just motivated me more to start looking for job and see what IT companies requires as knowledge. Now I hope that the apartment that my dad bought for me and my sis will be ready soon(low chance though since the building is missing roof because of some a**holes dont want to pay rest of their apartments until its done).

Why are you learning C++ when you are facing a Haskell test and never heard of it? Better learn the basics of functional programming languages. Haskell is pretty different to the procedural-programming or object-oriented languages you are probably used to. Anyways good luck for your test.

edit: To add to the topic I'm being insomniac right now - it's 4am here. -.-

I was studing today Haskell but when I tried to write even a simple code I was facing quite a lot of mistakes mostly as you mentioned above because of object-oriented languages.I was hoping to get a good sleep and study again at next morning a little before test but meh...couldn't fell asleep so just went to study something with which I'm familiar.

Haskell isn't easy when you've never learned something similar. It usually helps to imagine a mathematical representation of what you want to achieve with your code (hence it is functional).

For being productive with something else then I'm not sure if it is insomnia or just the nerves. I tend to wash the windows when I should learn something. Or tidy up the room. Or sort the DVDs. You just have the feeling to do something more productive than to learn the stuff, as it gets in your head sooo slowly.
If you think, you should sleep, then I recommend listening to instrumental music (with a sleeptimer) and reading a shortstory. When you finish the story you feel like having done (and finished) at least something and the music calms your brain. Works at least for me....
...oh, I think I should do so right now.

Sleep well. Also about mathematical representation - it's something that I often do before solving a problem but yet when trying to write something I'm just mixing up everything. Well its 6am anyway so not much sense in sleeping mostly because I will wake up more tired than I am right now.

Cause there's a guy above you that explains what insomnia really is about, and it's funny cause it's 5 AM here and i'm definitely no insomniac.

I've only re-used the term from the title to fit the topic. Sorry, I didn't want to annoy anyone that has a very seriously bad disorder. Still I wouldn't count out a light disorder - but I'm not a doctor.

I have a way. Embrace it. For instance, I can't sleep at night at all. So I've found a job which I can do at night. So I always work night-shift. I've just came back from work, I can watch some TV shows, go to sleep, and when I wake up I can work on my youtube channel content.

Edit: And if you wonder what I do: I work at a dispatch in a government office. Recently there's not much to do, so I slack all night long and still get paid. ;)

Avoidance of sleep, increased stress levels, conflicting emotions, and a lack of motivation/drive/momentum. That doesn't describe insomnia. It describes avoidance, and I am a veteran in that department. I would guess that you are avoiding something but are unable to come to grips with your reluctance and the basis for it. The human mind is a tricky thing, able to hide information from itself because it's not comfortable thinking about it.

If you sense that I'm on the right track with my guess, I can point you toward dealing with it. If not, then please disregard the above.

Avoidance of sleep...hardly, stress levels dropped after finals,no problem with emotions + got a motivation. The only real avoidance I see in me is to fail miserably at something that I spent a lot of time and energy for it.And yes I know that it doesn't describe insomnia thanks to kirbman101. And I know that human mind can be tricky ^^ " If you think you are sick, your brain will make you sick" or something like that used to say my doctor xD
