This year i challenge my self to only buy game from bundle either Humble, Fanatical, IndieGala or even Steam it self. The reason for this challenge is that i always spent so much money when it come to big steam sale, and these games i might never play besides installing it.

So yeah, i have backlog of shame (not really gigantic but still a big task to tackle for me). In this past 2 years i have developed method to tackle this backlog. 2 years I limit my self from buying games on sale for a certain amount of money and this amount grow less on every sale until i completely stop buying game. I also have found a way to make me play more games through my backlog.

But every now and then i feel bored and in need some new game, the cheapest way would be to buy a bundle. Not only i get cheaper game, sometimes it included with other interesting game that i haven't heard before. Also ST is like a godsend for me.
With that i've started this challenge and i am looking forward to this year. Will it be more or less than buying from a sale? :)

What about you guys? Do you have simillar problem and how do you deal with it? Do you plan to complete your backlog or just keep buying more game?

The vast majority of the games in my library come from bundles, and many of the ones that aren't were eventually bundled anyways.

This is why it is better to wait than ever before. Before bundle we wait for sale, now we got sale and bundle, yay. :)

Must be a hard work beaten those games. Would you mind sharing your method of beating those 75%?

Hmm well first would be not taking anything in your game collection than games you will want to play, though there might be some one might not like, these i tend to remove from account. Just handful or two have been like that for me. :)

I won't remove any game even though it is a really bad game. This works as a reminder for me to not buy this kind of games.

Still struggling with playing part, especially when i'm in a busy day.
I play 2 games at once. 1 long game and 1 shorter game. The short one for when i am starting to feel bored out of the longer one. When i beat the short one, i pick another short one. My problem would be with RPGs. When i am not playing game for a week or more, getting back to continue that same game is really hard because i don't remember what to do. Had an idea to keep a journal for those long RPG, but i never write anything there :v

No way, i won't buy early-access (EA get it?) title. Wait until full release then buy. Too many bad examples.

No wonder, might be quite tired after such day after all and it's hard to concentrate on it, but perhaps taking 15-30 min nap and then some beverage and try to play would be a good solution. :)

Will try that. Usually my nap will automatically become sleep like full 6-8 hours. :|

Maybe i just make a list on google keep or notepad for what i want to do next (eg quest). Hopefully it is not time consuming and at least i am not entirely blind on what to do next. :)

I think it really depends on the state of the game, type of the game and expectations. Like a buggy, half-done RPG is likely leaving a bad taste in one's mouth than a puzzle with half of the levels. Or how Rimworld and Factorio worked/work - really-really well done, competent games with dozens of hours of content, even during early access. It's a pity that there are dozens of failed product for each of the games that made early access in a great way.

Oh course! There are some good titles such as Rimworld, Factorio, They Are Billions, Slay the Spire, Oxygen not Included, Astrooner and so on. These games are in my wishlist. But i personally like playing game through it's content (a finished game). I think that is how i support the developer and not getting screwed by failed early access/abandonware.

When i read that Subnautica will be coming out of early access, that makes me want to buy it even more because i know they deserve my money. They've done it, they have completed their "baby". :)

One exception would be Black Mesa, i bought it when it was on sale really cheap. Played it for 5 hours and have to stop because it will have more content later and i want to play when it is a full game. :D

I think I finished Broforce's campaign around alpha, and then they expanded it like 2-3 times longer, it was crazy :D
But yes, as far as playing goes, maybe best when the game is done, though I'm pretty sure that's why Sunless Skies is kind of struggling, despite of having Fallen London and Sunless Sea as a "portfolio" of the developer to show. Not one's role to save it, it just a bit said that there are so many games (mostly bad, though we have cool-game-overdose times as well) that they stuggle to get the money, and time of the players.

That could be an exception for me, especially if i like the game and want them to finish it. It is sad that some honest developer didn't get supported, while other money grabbing games does. They have ruined people trust in early access :(

Maybe will throw what 3,99€ to EA Access system to play several of their games through in one month... perhaps. o.o

Yes, already planned this just for Inquisition. Later when i have beaten most of my backlog. Just subs for a month and done.

Haha you need to put clock/phone alarm to wake you up. :D Only 15-30 min can do wonders, in fact sleeping 1-2 hours might make you more sleepy even. o.-

I learn to do some power nap and still need some practice. Yeah, the quickest nap i did was 3 hours, and it didn't feel good. :|

Something like that or ready list from which you just cross done things over. :)

See, gaming is not an easy task anymore :D

I only buy a lot of individual games during sales, or if one I'm very interested in is coming out and I buy it at launch (which is rare).

I buy maybe a handful of bundles a year, and I had a Humble Monthly subscription I'd like to get again once I have a better job.

Sometimes to buy a game at launch is also a good experience. Some game that i have bought at launch like Witcher3 and Tekken7 because you won't get spoiled for story and like Tekken you can do online with more fighter than spammer.

Hope you will get that job you want :)
As for Humble Monthly i won't skip this whole year. I want to see it's value to whether skip a month or not.

Definitely. Bundles are just great, even if you're only interested in a couple of games they're more than worth their money. And some random game might surprise you. I really love adding games I don't know to my library and see what they're actually like and if I can enjoy them.

But that being said, my backlog is far too big for me to buy anymore at the moment unless 90% of one is actually on my wishlist. I'm also finished with all my big AAA games, so I decided to buy them directly every now and then to have something different than the sea of indie.

Yeah, i only buy bundle if there is a game in my wishlist if its tier 1. But if its tier 3, at least 70% from all that are in my wishlist.

That is nice. I don't know when i will buy another AAA game. I am limited to my video card, and pricing in my country is still way to high. Which is good as i can complete my backlog :)

I buy bundles when most of it consist of games I really want and I already own no more than 1 or 2 games. The exchange rate is quite high in Brazil, so buying in dollar is expensive no matter the value. Still, there are bundles I can't resist [mostly visual novels].
Buying individual games during sale is generally cheaper, or at least it used to be. Nowadays, about half of the games released are expensive for us too. Some Devs/Publishers don't follow steam suggestion about regional pricing anymore. Also, the steam sales used to be better and with higher discounts.
I do buy a lot of individual games from steam itself. If I think the price for a game I want is fair, if I want to play it so bad on release or if a certain game that I believe will never be bundled get a great discount. On rare occasions I get the urge to play an specific game and buy it on impulse with no regards for it's price.
To sum it up, I buy a lot and have no self control. ^^

Hey, as long you happy playing those games and get the most value from it or not feel guilty having many backlogs. :)
This is happened to me when steam first implemented regional pricing for my country. When there is sale, i know i will be broke that month.

I don't really buy bundles, as said above the price from Brazil doesn't make as worth it.

I do have a lot of games from when I started to buy games and stopped with piracy because then I would buy a lot of series (well, I supposed they were bundles from steam) and didn't played. Some I don't really mind because I played before the pirated version, so it's like paying after the fact, but some do bother me because it' feels like wasted money.

The thing with bundles it's that I feel I ended up with a lot of games that I just won't play and I don't really care about having a high number of games just for the number. Even here on SG I try to only entered giveaways for games I truly believe I'll play, being one I want to buy or a genre that I think I may like but never played.

My situation with Steam refund it's not great right now so i'm trying to be more selective with the games I buy as well I've been trying to save money for other stuff, so this next sale probably it's gonna be interesting. There's a lot of games i've been dying to play, but i'll try to hold myself for only three, and two of those I need to be sure I do want to play, so if I take a risk in a game i'm not entirely sure if it is my style (I always try to experiment new genres), I will still be able to get a refund.

That is great, appreciate and show support for those devs. My exclusion would be EA and Activision, for them i would gladly pirate yarr!

That's why ST is like godsend, because i can trade that bundle leftover. If no one want to trade with it, i can just do giveaway. Win-win :D. Of course we should only enter giveaway for game that we really want. What confuse me is that many cheap(garbage) games giveaway can have more than 100 entries. Do people really play this? 0_o

My situation with Steam refund it's not great right now so i'm trying to be more selective with the games I buy

What's the problem with steam refund? Is it not reliable anymore?

I might do this for next year when buy games on sale. Just buy 2 or 3 games that i really want to play right away. Thanks for the idea :)

Yeah, I understand the problem with EA but for me the worst is Ubisoft just because Uplay always bugs with me. I really want to play AC Origins (once it goes on a good sale), but I just don't have the patience for it and since I found out how cheap a game can be I don't really pirate anymore (also Steam/Origin made me lazy to cracked and fix the bugs and stuff like that, haha)

Steam Refund it's fine, but I was using a lot I think. I bought 32 games in the time of a year and did 19 refunds, but I buy a lot of games at once, so the last time I bought five and refunded three and they send me a email letting me know that I was asking too many (although it did refund those three) and that "Steam refund it's not a way to test games" which I found it odd since in the refund page says I can ask for almost any reason included if I played a little and did not thought was fun (which for me is "testing the game") but what you gonna do? It's been months, I've bought a few games -- a lot less that I used to -- and I hope it's cool if I need refund for one or two, but it does sucks because Steam Refunds is the reason I found some really great games I probably wouldn't had play without knowing that if didn't liked I could get my money back.

I have hope for Ubisoft, i mean they do make good games, they listen to critic and always try new things. But yeah, Uplay really have many bugs.

There was one time that i opted out from their 2-step-verification system. About a week after that suddenly i can't log in because there was strange activity on my account (it was me opted out from 2 step verification, duh). They want me to change password. I changed it, logging in to Uplay and to my surprise that verification system i've had opted was activated automatically! Okay, don't panic lets try enter codes from authenticator. Nope didn't work at all. I make new account just to contact their customer service. Fortunately they have good customer service. In 2 days i can logged in to my account and then i activated their 2 step verification.

There was also problem with AC: Black Flag cloud save. If you sync your game to their server, you will lose progress :\

Oh, i was just reading their policy on refund. It sure does written there:

You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason. Maybe your PC doesn't meet the hardware requirements; maybe you bought a game by mistake; maybe you played the title for an hour and just didn't like it.

That is odd. :( I wouldn't consider 19 refunds in a year as "abuse".

I only refund game when it's not working or have really bad optimisation. I think i only refunded once for Batman Telltale at launch.

I think I bought like 10 times more bundles than individual games, or such. Being in EU with no regional pricing Steam itself is the most expensive source to buy, and having a solid backlog of games really pad the time while I wait for some nice new bundles, And because I don't really buy single games - bigger chance that the cheap bundle is actually good, than it would be if I would buy every game at 50% or such! :D

Yes, I rarily buy invidual games, only for highly wishlisted titles, heavy discounts or new releases, and only for games I truly want to play immediately, nothing left "for later". I usually stock 3-4 of such games max between each Steam sale, while everything else is a bundle bought across remaining half of the year.

It's beneficial for everybody. There are good games in bundles at least several times per month, and if you're buying a bundle for one game alone, usually you're still saving more than half of the price, while getting remaining games as an extra. If you just shift your expectations from "I want to get it immediately" to "I'll wait a year or two for all of that stuff to get bundled and then get down to it", then you'll save awfully huge amount of money. Not only from discounts, but (mainly) from bundles themselves. This is even more true with humble monthly, although I'm not subbed myself, still a huge waste of money for games I don't want to, and I'm too lazy to trade them away.

So true! For me it would be "wait for a bundle or a big discount, for now just play through my backlog".

This is even more true with humble monthly, although I'm not subbed myself, still a huge waste of money for games I don't want to, and I'm too lazy to trade them away.

This is what i also want to see for this year. Is it always a better value to sub to monthly? or should i skip when i don't like the early unlock? The answer is remain to be seen :)

Monthly is "good" if you need influx or quite enjoyable games to play for a really low price. Thing is, unless they revealed something you already want for those $12 (like with other bundles), you'd probably be better just going through your backlog and saving that $12 for later.

I'm specific in this regard since I'm very picky and I don't throw money for stuff I don't want, so this is mainly why I'm not subbed to monthly myself - it's just the fact that I have enough of games to play, and those that I want to get from monthly I get through trading anyway.

I still say it's an excellent deal if you want to extend your library with a lot of good games for the absolute minimal price. The problem is that those games, while good, might not necessarily match your taste, that's all. And depending on your free time, you might not even have enough of it to finish all of monthly games in... well... a month, which makes it even more tempting to stop subscription and just finish your backlog instead.

In general it's hard decision, up to you I guess. Personally I'm not subbed, but I can totally understand people that are.

Well, next year i can buy non bundled game. I will still sub, but only for revealed game that i want. And also considering it's discounted price, genre and how long to beat i will sub or not. This year i will be focusing on spending only on bundle to see if it's cheaper than my yearly spending on sale. While also beating my backlog. Next year will entirely be about finishing my backlog. Only buy 2-3 games each sale and sub bundle/monthly that i will play and beat it right away.

Thing is, unless they revealed something you already want for those $12 (like with other bundles), you'd probably be better just going through your backlog and saving that $12 for later.

Yes, this would be a better way to see the value for humble monthly. Most of hidden games would be indies that already have cheap price and will certainly goes on sale. Maybe only 2 of those is in my wishlist. With that saved $12 i can buy 2 or maybe 3 indies that i want. In short, do not buy game because it's on sale but because you want to play it right now. :)

I buy more bundles since i found about the option of trading non wanted games. But my backlog is so big that i rarely buy anything now, bundle or singly. It has to be either a great discount (around 7 euro tops) or something i have been interested in for a long time.

It doesn't matter to me as long there is a game i want in that bundle, i will likely buy it. Then trade or gift the unwanted one. I never buy bundle just to level up in SG.

But my backlog is so big that i rarely buy anything now, bundle or singly.

And that's also the reason i will only buy bundle with game that i want. Beating through those backlog and hoping that it will eventually beaten and i can buy new game (hope is good, right?) :)
