I stumbled across an amazing free game called Space Engine a couple of months ago and had many great hours on it and continue to do so.

I watched NerdCubed play 'Rodina" and the hype about "No Man's Sky". Both games cost/will cost money but Space Engine is free. It's realistic, complex, yet incredibly enjoyable for who doesn't know anything about space. It's infinite world generation and immense scale yet immense detail will really surprise you.

Not to mention the wallpapers made from this game were the best ones I have ever used. Most you can find on:
http://www.reddit.com/r/spaceengine

It's been greenlit and hopefully will appear on steam soon:

But as of now you can get it here:

I want to help bring this game into more light because I think it can turn into something amazing and the developer most likely put immense work into programming this (Look at the goals 0.0):

I hope you can enjoy it as much as I do.

Space Engine? Sounds like a Space Engineers rip-off.

I don't think anything but "space" is shared in common between Space Engine and Space Engineers. It was released in 2010 and it's gameplay is completely different. There's no "building/crafting" at all in the game ATM, and this is in no way planned to be the main focus. It's an exploration game, more of a "Universe Simulator".

Ah, I didn't mean that it was a rip-off, I just thought that the title sounded like Space Engineers... :)
I misinterpreted myself, sorry. :P

(I actually saw that game a while ago and looks terrific, I wish I could download it. :D)

Yeah is this even a game? It's basically a universe simulator/generator that allows you to explore everything in it. lol

"A video game is an electronic game that involves human interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device"

What do you want to call this lol?

You answered the wrong question. Your definition includes the word game when trying to explain what a game is.

So Hammer Editor is a game because it has visual feedback and a UI?

It can be software but it can be a game as well. Space Engine provides entertainment, I doubt a lot of astronomers use it for their studies atm.

Why does this matter so much to you anyway?

It doesn't. Just irked me.

That video game definition is so clunky as it really doesn't defy a whole lot.

I mean I agree with skullhead that this isn't exactly a game, more of a visual experience. Under your definition you would consider Hammer editor a game on it's own.

I mean ironically and technically sure, it can be "played" with but we all know it isn't what people consider a game.

This seems amazing, and the future plans even more so. I'll have to try it later. ^^

What about this game do you find enjoyable? I'm genuinely curious, (as a non-astronomer/quantum-scientist).

I'm not either. The variety, detail, and scale is interesting. Some planets have life, some don't. All have different landscapes. It's fun finding unique features on planets and suns, exploring different galaxies. The world is generated by the same seed so a friend or someone (for example on /r/spaceengine) can share their find. The game isn't meant (atleast for me) to be played for 3 hours straight at once. I play for a couple of minutes to an hour every couple of days/weeks. Any star you see in the game, you can travel to it and beyond, so you'll never "finish" it. It's relaxing, and the music makes it pretty emotional.

Did you ever go exploring in an RPG, adventure game, open world game, ect. (ex. Skyrim) to find unique dungeons or landscapes or architecture. This is basically the same thing with the universe. However, it's made to be realistic. You get a sense of a scale on the one world you live in, and get to imagine what may be out there that you'll never be able to visit in real life. I don't have any special knowledge about space except some documentaries and the internet, but it fascinates me a lot, so this is why this might appeal to me more than others.

If the developer can complete the "Single player space exploration game" goal successfully, it would probably become the one of the best games I'll ever play. Flight simulation, construction, sandbox, open world, exploration, vastness with detail, and space appeal to me a LOT. Not sure if it will ever complete "Long-Term Goals" with one developer but if it happens successfully with one or a team, it would be insane.
