Since the last beta client update there's an option in each game properties to allow the client to continue downloading updates.

No need to alt + tab anymore :)

Edit:

I don't know if this is new too, but there's a limit automatic updates by hour

Edit2:

Added Global checkbox

Awesome. I hope they also provide it as a global option.

Yeah, it'd be way too inconvenient to set this for every freaking game.

Before it was a game by game basis, but now they changed it as of today.

+1 And I hope they bring back multi-download, they removed that few updates ago, no one noticed I guess... And a working "pause/resume" button too would be nice.

I noticed that. :P
Sucks.

It was one by one, but now its a global option as of today.

You must be running the beta. Steam hasn't updated for me recently and I don't see that option.

Yes, it's in beta, I said that in my last comment when I bumped the thread, but I don't know why zoahporre replied to old comments repeating what I said when I bumped the thread :p

You could just stop and continue download again to make it download while playing game. Not a big deal -_-

That's what I did in the past. Not a huge deal, but this would certainly be convenient.

True, but there are some games that glitch a bit when alt-tabbing.

Online games/ping, presumably?

Glad this has finally been implemented :)

600 checkboxes vs 1 checkbox ... hm, I too would have preferred a global option.

If I know I'm playing a multiplayer game I can pause the downloads myself before I start the game.

At least the pause button actually works for me now. "Pause all" used to stop everything currently downloading, only for some new download to suddenly appear from nowhere, barge its way to the front of the queue, and suck up all my precious bandwidth.

Not sure why it's taken them so long to fix this.

Strange, I never had this happen to me. Whenever I started a game, all downloads paused automagically and I don't recall that a d/l would suddenly start when I'm ingame.

Well, I don't have to use the feature =)

I never could figure out why it stopped on games that are offline only.

The studies show that if you download something while playing Fortix, the speed increases by 20%.

The parent study of course being that if you play something while downloading Fortix, your enjoyment increases by 20%.

Finally! This always irked me, lol. Wait, it still pauses every download each time you start a game?

This just appeared on beta client, I guess/hope they will add the global option sometime. Still it's an improvement and now we have a way to "fix" this when devs forgets to enable the option.

finally... hated it, that the downloads stopped automatically while playing offline games :(

Finally!
Seems like steam is really working on the download section and it's feature! Now what we really need, is a scheduler, so we could schedule the downloads to start and stop at certain times of the day!

omg, they did it! I didn't check the settings after the beta updates! this is awesome! thanks a lot for letting me know :)
Edit: it needs some extra options, but so far, this is useful.

I want a global option or I'll just continue to do what I have done in the past when needed to.

Needs multi-downloads and global settings. No way I'm going to do each game setting manually.

global setting would mean i actually use this. usually now if i want to download something that takes more than a couple minutes i'll start it then go to bed or to work.

For those that wanted a global option, in the last update of the beta client:

  • add global setting to allow downloads during gameplay, and change the per-app settings to be global/allow/deny.
