Hi, I hope you're aware that some games appear to be owned by people even tough they're just remains from the free weekends, betas, etc and they don't actually own them.
However, Steam does know what you own or not and if you own a game you can't add it to your wishlist... so can you guys read the wishlist and remove those games from the "exists in account" list so we can enter giveaways for games that we really want ?

Not really, I bought several games and activated them, still saw them on my wishlist.

Well, steam doesn't remove them from the list if you had them it seems, but you can't add them back.

Still, something should be done about this since it's not fair for the people that have those remains.

I think the wishlist entries only disappear if you buy through steam store and directly for your account. Keys and activated gifts (not sure about them) don't effect the wishlist. So it can be used for leechers who already own the game.. And if there's a possibility, there will be users who exploit it.

This is true. When I bought the Batman bundle on Amazon a few weeks ago and activated the games on Steam, I had to go to my wishlist and manually remove both games.

Well, another way would be to have a special temporary feature that requires you to first clear your wishlist, let the site check it, then add the games you don't actually own... as I still don't think you can re-add games in the wishlist after you own them... unless steam site is that unsecure on the wishlist part, needs some testing that's for sure.

This sounds actually like a good idea. It should be possible, but it would involve a lot of programming and testing time I guess. Let's see what the people in power think about it. In my opinion these games just shouldn't be given away on these free weekends. Like the name says, it's only for one weekend...

Better method is to check last sync history if the owner own the game b4 or not, then if the free weekend comes, admin mark that game as exception as long as the game are on freeweekend, so anyone who didnt own the game b4 the freeweekend are eligible to enter giveaway.

But with all free weekends come sales, where many people would actually buy the game, hence letting people who actually do own the game, enter giveaways for it.

I think it would be nice if we had an option to only see the giveaways of the games in our wishlist tho. I wouldn't search Bastion every so often haha. :P

Best option: go and annoy the heck out of Steam Support. It's Valve's fault for not correctly updating your library.

-> go fix the root of the problem instead of implementing workarounds here on SG.

I think Valve won't care much about SteamGifts and they won't change something just for a website.

That is until every SG user creates a new support ticket every day about this issue :3

That won't do anything good.
Every user yes... but not every day! That's just spam and gets really annoying really fast.

Actually, I wonder if it is a SteamGifts issue and not a Valve/Steam one. The Left 4 Dead 2 free weekend that just passed and the Sanctum one. I held off syncing until it was over (over by roughly 10 minutes), and they never appeared in my account, and was able to enter the giveaways. I synced my account during Borderlands free weekend, and wasn't able to enter base game draws for a couple weeks. (Could still enter GotY... and didn't win, but that is beside the point).

It's a Valve issue.

As long as the game appears in your library, SG will think you own it.

And who did put it in your library during the free weekend? - Valve
And who's gotta remove it after the free weekend? - Valve
And who you gonna call? - Ghostbusters!

The right answer is "you". If you don't download and install the game you can still enter giveaways.

Edit: Sorry :(

I thought that because I never had the problem.

Sorry

Incorrect. There are reported cases of people who did not download or install it, but still could not enter.

Actually, I have not installed or played many free weekends, and I still get locked out of them if I sync when it is active. Steam removes the game as soon as it is over (at least I can't see it in my window)... which is a pain if you have not uninstalled it yet since it leaves it installed just unplayable. I uninstalled Borderlands 15 minutes before the free weekend ended and still could not enter.

It will appear in your library, even if you don't install the game.

You can enter giveaways as long as you don't sync your SG account after Valve has put it there.

If you sync your SG account after it is over (they removed it) you can enter giveaways fine. If you sync your account during the free weekend, and then again once it is gone from your library. You still can't enter giveaways for it for at least a week, usually two.

The problem I saw is that Steam was incorrectly keeping Left 4 Dead 2 in my profile's game list.

It wasn't in my Library listing, but if I went to My Profile in Steam, clicked on Games, and then listed All Games, I could find Left 4 Dead 2 sitting there with an install option. That was all on Steam's side. My Library was out of sync with what Steam displayed my profile as owning (and Steam Gifts presumably goes by what Steam reports through my profile.)

I didn't download and instald L4D2 durning the free weekend, but when i synced i couldn't enter giveaways...

When you sync your game list, SG ask Steam what games are on your account. During the free weekend Steam will always answer that you have the game wether you installed it or not. It's a Steam bug, not something that can be fixed on SG.

Too bad there was no way to flag items in your library you do not actually own, like beta keys and Free weekends. That would be nice. I am sure it could be exploited by people who want 20 copies of Skyrim, but I think that would get reported pretty quickly if they won and received it more than once.
