So a few hours ago my old Turtle Beach X12 broke - I set it down on my desk and one of the ear-covering-things fell off. What should I replace them with? I'm currently looking at the Razer Kraken and QPAD-90. Suggestions?

Giveaway.

EDIT: Ended up getting CM Storm Sirus True 5.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset. Thanks for all your help - giveaway is still open for another day.

I've always favoured "true" (as in, they have the correct number of speakers and don't just upmix stereo sound through software trickery) surround headsets and I've yet to encounter one that's better that the Speedlink Medusa NX USB 5.1. But then again I haven't been able to afford ones that are potentially better like the Roccat Kave 5.1 or the CoolerMaster Storm Sirius S. From now on I always plan to get another Medusa though, cuz there simply isn't anything that offers this much quality AND comfort anywhere near the same price range. Also out of all the headsets I've ever owned it's by far the most comfortable. Turtle Beach used to have one just like it, I mean the exact same thing, just different branding.

Thanks for the suggestion - Medusa doesn't look bad. About your other suggestion, the Roccat Kave, I've heard that it isn't very durable from people. Anyone have experiences with them?

I was just covering my bases since I think most people would say the Sirius and Kave headsets have better audio quality but looking at them I agree with you since neither of those two looks very durable or comfortable.

whatever you'd buy, just don't pick any SteelSeries
good sound quality and stuffs, but fragile as fuck

I've heard about that - was planning on not getting them for that exact reason.

I've got mine on oct/2012 and before my birthday last year (May), the wire kinda broke and i couldn't use the microphone anymore. I was SO careful with the headset and still... this happened. It was pretty expensive, considering the short time that it was fully functional.
So for me, no more SteelSeries.

I exclusively use headsets (no speakers) so I'd rather get nice ones.

Go with the standard m50s. I use them and a modmic and am very happy with the quality both ways. The magnet thingy works really well.

Nice, but they look pretty stiff - how flexible are they?

The band has decent flex and where the earpads connect, they kinda fold/extend down about a half inch. I'd say they would fit rather large craniums, if that's what you're asking. :)

Pros:
+Quality materials
+Sound is awesome (there are actually 4 separate speakers in each earpad)
+Mic is sturdy, crisp, and folds (very good!)
+Volume base controller is very handy (can adjust each individual speaker volume separately)
+Quality/long USB cord (braided)
+LEDs (red) on volume base controller AND headset itself
+Price is great for what you get!

Cons:
-may be a bit heavy for some ppl after long periods of use
-no off switch

Not bad, but I'm a bit confused by the "base controller". Would I just set it down on my desk next to my keyboard or what?

Yes. I have mine on my desk above my keyboard tray. The large volume dial is handy and because it's lit up with the LEDs, you can easily make adjustments in the middle of gaming quickly. There are 2 USB cords from the base to your computer. These power the base and headset, and one is for the sound (I'm assuming). From the base to the headset, there is a breakoff cord (much like the XBOX controllers) that is about 3ft long! The base has enough weight to stay put, and there is rubber on the bottom for grip.
Oh and you can mute the mic and the sound separately as well (buttons for both).

Not a big fan of Logitech, recently their products have been sub-par imo.

Do not get the Razer Kraken. My brother had it for 2 weeks and the sound just stopped working. We checked everything, at first I thought maybe he messed it up somehow. But, nope. It just died. The Razer Tiamat on the other hand has been holding up very well for my brother. The headset I'm using right now is a generic pair. I'm actually thinking about replacing it with the Tiamat. I've tried it and it's very comfortable too.

Thanks Jamoke, the person who recommended the Kraken too me had his headset break soon after - unfortunately the Tiamat is a little out of my price range.

I was going to suggest this one as well. It's the one I am using, no problems at all, adjusts to your head. No complaints.

Audio Technica ATH-M50. Stronger bass than AD700X, but are imperfect for games. Closed design.
ATH-AD700X. Weaker bass, better in games than M-50. Open design.
Sennheiser HD 558. Good all arounders. Can be "modded" to sound similar as 598s, but warranty is voided. Open design.
Sony MDR-V6. Quite good jack of all trades for the price, if you can find them since they're discontinued. Ear pads wont last long, but are replaceable. Closed design.
MDR-7506. Very similar to MDR-V6, but have less bass. Closed design.

And if you're looking for a mic, then Zalman Zm-Mic1 ($10) or Antlion's Modmic ($40)

All are around the budget you mentioned.

You have the wrong idea about which one is better for games if you judge only by open or closed cans.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I never said that. Open and close designs are preference choice. I like open better than closed. Strong bass isn't something I want for games, or anything really.

Sennhaiser PC 360 /350 or could be even better Sennhaiser HD + alone micro. QPAD-90 - very good headphones, but middle microphone(I want buy it, but for the same price I get Sennhaiser PC 360 without box, cheaper SteelSeries Syberia series have better micro). QPAD QH-90, even any Razer haven't compareable microphone to that Sennhaiser. Only 1 which has similar quality is Logitech G35. Sennhaiser PC 350 is closed design, 360 open. Open have worse bass, but better positioning in games.

Sony MDR-V55. Just bought them and they are amazing. Microphone separately. Not worth skimping on the headphones for the sake of a built-in microphone.
Other than that, stick with Sennheiser, not overpriced Razer and Qpad.

simply buy the best stereo headphones you can afford.

all that 5.1 and 7.1 stuff are shitty quality ad not worthy

I have a headset Steelseries 3H usb with soundboard included. Nice quality, but the 7.1 emulated is like this doesn't exist. Anyway, this is cheap.

tell us how you like them & keep us updated on a review for them. alot of people make these threads but dont always relay what they think of their final purchase & their after thoughts on the headset they bought. im curious what you think of them.

i love my V-Modas, but im contemplating on maybe purchasing either their fancier headphones or something else. i haven't made up my mind yet. i dont have a mic on mine & if their $30 mic attachment to their headsets arent great, then i might purchase a strictly gaming headset.
