If people want to set high level requirements on giveaways, that's generally fine, although after a point it can become kinda stupid. Recently someone has gotten their gollies out of making level ten requirement giveaways for common bundle games which in one, they received three entries, for a three copy giveaway, so everyone that entered won. He/she then made three more telling me it was done just for me since I found the prior one rather silly, especially considering how it turned out. Two out of three of the new giveaways ended with zero entries.

Right in the descriptions of these giveaways, he/she says things like "awaits the contributor level complaints," or the title of this thread. He then tells me how I don't understand what giveaways are, but when he seems to start them to goad people into responding angrily, and limits the available entry pool so significantly, it just doesn't really come off as giveaways started in the proper spirit of a giveaway, or this site to me. If these were giveaways for some new AAA game, or what not then sure, that'd make sense, but for what he/she even describes as "shitty bundle games" with the kind of descriptions he/she uses, it just doesn't make sense to me. What do the rest of you think?

Do you find giveaways like this to be in the proper spirit of this site?

It's up to the giveaway creator to decide who they want to enter. Bundle games or not, they are giving away for free a game they paid for.

He managed to get you to complain, so he's been successful. I will say that you are acting in the spirit of his giveaways.

I'm of that opinion too, but your question was "Why does it bother you, exactly?".

I don't see the reason why they should do a whole song and dance of making such high restrictions so that only one or two people can enter; just give the game to them directly. It wastes space otherwise. Also, people seem to be very lenient and laissez faire of this whole thing, but that's probably the socialist in me wanting the person OP is describing to knock it the fuck off because it's tiresome and way too restrictive.

I think that person is a douchebag.
Initially, the giveaways with high contributor levels for bundled games? That's fine. Some people do things akin to that to ensure that the most generous have far higher chances of winning, even when its bundled. The money dries up sometimes (or sometimes you can't justify spending a certain amount of cash on yourself), so that works.

The retaliatory giveaways are just petty though.
So, the first giveaways were fine, the follow-ups just to dangle things in people's faces and mock them? That's against the spirit of the site, regardless of rules and "they can do what they want".

Though you should know by now that you can't defeat a troll with logic. Just ignore it and they might potentially go away.

Pfft. Just set your account to not show high level giveaways, they'll never show up again. And you can stay happy.

Some people want to give to those who give the most to the community.

Even if he is doing it to piss people off, at least the top givers can win something easily.

I see nothing wrong with this.

Just set your options to only show giveaways of a level you're qualified for, then no more annoyance factor for you. Is it in the spirit of the site? Eh, if one person enters and one person wins that's within the spirit of the site as I see it, the game was given away. Though one could argue that in the new version of the site that if you don't get at least 5 entries it's too restrictive of a giveaway since that is the threshold that was set to increase one's level; yet, if the one doing the giveaway doesn't care about their level then where's the harm?

i think there are far too many people on the OTHER end of the system, who dont behave in the 'spirit' of this place either, who think giveaways are a right, and dont even acknowledge the gifters generosity or indeed that there even IS a human being on the other end of things, so if people want to have a bit of fun making a giveaway, and only limit it to people who have given a lot (or indeed, limit it just for the sake of a laugh) then thats their business.. let them have some fun with it! these people are by FAR one of the LEAST problematic things about this place.

at the very least, those high levels deserve to have a few easy pickings for all the giveaways theyve made.

I think ALL giveaways should be restricted to whatever contributor level I currently happen to be. That's my idea of what the spirit of giving should be.

Also, no more level 0 giveaways, you're mocking the higher levels by letting in so many people that big contributors have no chance of winning.

Finally, I just might be being facetious. OR AM I?

Edit: and just to answer the OP, I think that people successfully use this site in a spirit of generosity, and people successfully use this site in a spirit of selfishness. It seems open to these and other uses (such as those giveaways) in my opinion, as long as the rules are followed. Is it ideal? No, but that's reality.

I get why you might have gotten agitated/annoyed at them making GAs just to tease you with but maybe try to see it from their point of view? I mean, you must have said something to them telling them that it was "silly" or something to that effect since you say, "just for me since I found the prior one rather silly". How would you feel if someone came and questioned your GAs? I'm not saying that their teasing was a good response... no... but perhaps they felt attacked by you.

I'm not sure how things all went down; like, was the description "awaits the contributor level complaints" in the original GA before the "teasing" GAs? To me that doesn't sound like goading. There's are people on this site who whine about high CL requirements so it just sounds like a satirical remark on that condition to me.

As for your actual question... I personally think that as nice as it is to think that there's a "spirit of this site" truth is, this site just operates on GAs being made regardless of reason and it's kind of "silly" to judge people's GAs.

I'd say that Steamgifts, for as long as I've been here, has always had a kind of 'good natured trolling' element in its community, as can be seen in the odd variety of topics we see here, and indeed in the replies to this particular one. :) I don't know exactly what was said or done here, but I'd imagine it was intended in good humour and, as long as it doesn't outstay its welcome, it should be laughed with, or at least laughed off. To answer the question directly - I don't believe in a 'spirit of giveaways', but I do believe that this is in the 'spirit of the site'.
