Just bought Max Payne 3 for $15 and Mark of the Ninja for $3.50. If games are this cheap off places like Amazon and compatible with Steam, why do people not take advantage of the opportunity?

Amazon don't wantta sell those worldwide online steam games to NZ, country restricted bs. They just trying to force people to use proxy, fake address and a stolen credit card to make the purchase, but I can't be bothered.

Actually, you don't need a proxy when buying games from Amazon, a valid US billing address will suffice.
If you don't want to give them a fake address, give them a Borderlinx (or equivalent service) address.
As for CC, well, yes, you need one, but it doesn't have to be a US card at all.

Doesnt the CC have to be from that country your fake address is (your actual cc plus fake country doesn't match would logically = stolen credit card detection, something every online store should do)? Plus by faking the address, if anything goes wrong they can easily screw you over.

Used my swedish card today, got the adress from borderlinx, worked fine.

No, it doesn't. I can pay with my German CC just fine (that might be because it was issued by Amazon.de, though).

Plus by faking the address, if anything goes wrong they can easily screw you over.

Don't fake your address, then - use a Borderlinx address. Those are real, valid US addresses, after all.

I'll consider that for next time, thanks.

Use gift cards. Purchase GC on your real address and name, activate it and then use GC balance to buy games. That's what I do. I buy GC, delete my CC info on Amazon and make my purchase that way, so that fake address never gets in touch with anything real like my name, CC number etc.

What makes you think people don't?

1 decade ago

Comment has been collapsed.

Don't know, just seems like most people I've encountered stick with Steam. Also, how does Steam get away with charging so much when the games are so cheap elsewhere?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because the storefront is integrated into the client and it's what the vast majority of users see when they start it up. That's why.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This is true.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

its not that they get away with charging so much as it is that they dont lower the price of games over time like most other stores, e.g. 9 out of 10 retail places as i got frozen synapse collectors edition for $4 (has 2 copies of the game +2 copies of "red" dlc), instead they occasionally put it on sale for greater reductions which is the equivalence of dropping the price down

It's important to remember that, [ahem], " valve haz absoluutly zero controlz ovur any prising on their own steem client".

Hurr Durr Durr.

So really, While every other store on the entire planet can change pricing ( gmg recently did it to take a valiant stand against nz/au price gouging, something valve opposes), valve is the only one that has no control over its own store, so blame simply must rest with everyone else.

I rebut about having no control. There's always those valve games.

a) I'm Australian i know about the price gouging

b) they don't have the right to change it where retail do... I'm not saying blame everyone else nor am i saying blame steam... I'm just saying that they don't change prices, they do sales instead... and this is why i quoted the person i replied to about "charging so much"... so think more carefully before you make your silly "hurr durr durr" comments as they are un-needed and cantankerous.

I wish BF3 wasn't on Origin, it's a pain the way they make you open a web browser to get it running.

That has nothing to do with Origin, and everything to do with BF3 being kinda stupidly designed.

I only buy games from steam during the steam sales (daily, holiday, winter, summer, etc). Otherwise I use amazon, gmg, gamersgate, games.co.uk, etc. I rarely spend more than $15 for a game.

And nothing to do with my bank. I get these from the local post office.

Tons of people do buy them from places other than Steam, the only real problem with buying games from places other than Steam is that they're keys which makes them a lot more risky for trading than copies in someone's inventory.

Thanks for bringing this up actually, I've been under the impression that steam provided the best deals and the convenience led to me never looking around :)

1 decade ago

There are people buying always on steam rather than other web key store. I come up with 1 reason. Buying on steam is reliable. If your game has issue you can simple contact steam because Valve is a big company. Other reasons I think are maybe they are rich so they don't really care about paying full price on steam? or they just don't search online?

I don't use any other stores because even with all their discounts Steam has lower (for the most part) prices in my region. The only reason to use other stores is to avoid regional restrictions or obtain regionally unavailable games.
