Speaking with Kotaku, CD Projekt RED game designer Maciej Szczesni said, “We are trying to get rid of DRM. If someone wants to pirate a game, eventually he will.”

Managing director Adam Badowski continued, “Which is bad, of course. But you can’t do anything about it, so. We want to give the best user experience possible. When we removed DRM, people on those torrents were actually asking people not to download our game, because we [weren't using DRM].”

These guys are awesome.

AFAIK none of The Witcher had DRM so nothing new about it, also there is no reason to have DRM since this game has no online capabilities.

Witcher 2 had both DRM and DRM - free copies in sale. DRM was fully lifted some time after the launch though.

The retail copies were shipped with DRM, but it was removed with a patch exactly one week after release.

I also noticed a decent performance increase after that patch, which may or may not be related to the DRM removal. Would be interesting to know how much resources that shit eats on a PC.

Read the guy's post above, he's fully right. I have a retail copy from nearly day 1 and I remember how the situation was. At first there was some form of DRM, but devs removed it shortly after.

Online is pretty much the one time you don't need DRM - you are already not able to connect to the server with the duplicate key or whatever the kids use these days.

Also if companies only used DRM within reason these things would never be an issue in the first place :p

Unless I'm mistaken, EA still out-stupids Activision. I can at least respect Activision for achieving an utterly successful chokehold on its abused consumer base. EA however is pissing everyone off with terrible decisions backed by terrible PR. People were defending Diablo 3 back in the day. But I don't see anyone supporting SimCity, for instance.

Activision is abusive. EA is retarded. Ubisoft is clueless. Pick your poison.

News flash, you're making the same stupid case pro-DRM that the big company reps are. The fact that people pirated the game does not mean they would buy it if they could not pirate it. God i thought people would have understood this after so many years of DRM bullshit, guess i was wrong.

I am not justyfying DRMs- they are pretty useless anyway, because pirates usually find a way to bypass them and they only end up making things worse for those buying original copies... But I really do believe that some (not EVERY one, mind you) of those 4,5 milions who pirated Witcher 2 would buy the game given no other reason. And sorry for the late response, but I tend to forget about clicking "Replies" section when I'm on steamgifts (we need some notification system!)

Around 3,647 people use this script which highlights 3rd party DRM that is used on Steam, so we can avoid buying it. Probably many more people are watching out for bad DRM, since most people don't bother with/know how to find and use such scripts.

"People on those torrents were actually asking people not to download our game, because we [weren't using DRM]"
So far as I see it those people really don't care if it's DRM'd or not. One thing for sure because of no DRM their game would be easily shared peer to peer.

Still, I tip my hat off to the devs.

There's nothing wrong with DRM. The problem is DRM that oversteps its boundaries. If you're really going to celebrate every game without DRM and boo every game with it, your concern amounts to "EA isn't giving its shit get taken for free and that pisses me off."

I pirate my share, but I don't act like I'm entitled to. If a company wants to protect their shit I can't blame them, unless it does go too far.

All DRM oversteps its boundaries. All DRM limits the paying customer's experience - unless there's some DRM design I'm not thinking of at the moment.

CD key. You want to play the game? Buy a copy so you have the key to install it with, or Steam. Steam doesn't over step crap unless the game itself has additional DRM.

Yay for nay DRM! I'm glad these developers are taking this approach. I'm pretty bummed about the 'all PC gamers are criminals/pirates' approach that some companies take. While understandable, I just feel like the junk some DRM puts on your HDD is way out of line. Also the always online crap is pretty lame. Yes, I am aware that Steam is a form of DRM but at least I chose to use it (I know some people didn't have that choice, yes) and grew fond of the platform and the services it provides.

Finally someone who gets it. There is no SecuROM or SolidShield or StarForce or Tages or GFWL or Social club or Uplay that is going to stop piracy. EVER.

So the most decent thing you can do is put effort into your game, listen to the community and rely on honest gamers. With all the sales on Steam, there is no need to pirate games any more.

I still haven't finished first Witcher, but if I like it, I'll but 2 and 3 as well.

I will continue to throw money at CDProjekt due to their no-DRM stance. DRM has never stopped pirates from doing their thing, but it has stopped me, a paying customer, from playing games. While I support the dev's right to make money off their games, DRM that affects paying customers is just the dumbest idea since the Pet Rock.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

+1 from me. DRM on these kinds of games never stops the "end user" pirate. Just hit up your nearest torrent site and there's a version with all the DRM removed by some dedicated expert. DRM only ever interferes with the play experience of legitimate buyers.

id hesitate to be honest... cdp arent exactly flawless in how they treat their customers... do you remember when they yanked down their forums for about a month after the game came out just so that they wouldnt have to deal with any concerns or problems people were experiencing? i thought that was a pretty shoddy move on their part to be honest. the game was pretty good, but i think their treatment of customers leaves a bit to be desired, along with the fact the game will most likely be censored again in some regions...

i want witcher 3, but after witcher 2's launch treatment, i feel kinda uncertain trusting them to be honest... which is a pity, because my respect for them was on such a massive high after the first game which i simply adored. i guess its just unwise to ever trust any publisher on their own merits, only each individual game on its own.
