So I recently beat Primordia and it's gotten me wanting to get more point and click adventures in the same vein. I know about Telltale games, but the subject matter just doesn't appeal to me (Never got into Walking Dead and only vaguely remember Back to the Future).

Currently, I'm thinking of getting the Blackwell games, but want a couple opinions on those before getting them. Journey Down and A New Beginning both look pretty fun, too, but again, I'd like some opinions before committing.

And here's English Country Tune to thank: Gone

I really like the deponia series for a point and click :)

It's really something isn't it? Though the puzzle makes next to no sense most of the times. But our self-esteemed-egomaniac rufus and handful of other charming characters really fills the blank in between. Not to mention the beautifully designed trash planet (Kinda ironic) Deponia itself :>

^^ INDEED I can't wait for the 3rd game that comes out this year.

I'm playing Chaos on Deponia, it's a great game so far. Other good games are Monkey Island (remake ones are great!), The Dig, Full Throttle (although it's not available on steam), Still Life 1 and 2, Back to the Future, A New Beginning (it reminds me of The Dig, but not as good), Indiana Jones (awesome games!!), Runaway series and Loom... Those are the ones I could remember. I also heard Syberia 1 and 2 and Longest Journey are great (although I havent played them)

Hadn't heard of Machinarium, but I was kind of eyeing Deponia.

And I wouldn't be much of a gamer if I never played the Monkey Island games :P

Glad to hear this! You cant be looking for point and click games without knowing about monkey island!

I need to play Machinarium yet but I've only ever heard great things about it, I played Botanicula by the same developers and it's definitely one of, if not my most favorite point and click game out there

Escape From Monkey Island 1 and 2, Leisure Suit Larry In Land of the Lounge Lizards: Reloaded, and all the classic Sierra Adventure Point and Click games on GOG.com (Space Quest, Police Quest, Leisure Larrys, Kings Quest, Quest For Glorys)

I passed on Leisure Suit Larry since the subject didn't really interest me, but if it gets enough recommendations...

Yes. Awesome games also made by Wadjet Eye (the developer of Primordia). I also enjoyed The Shivah (also by Wadjet), though it is definitely a lot less polished than their later games. Unfortunately, it's not available on Steam, just Desura.

Actually, Wadjet Eye only published Primordia, Gemini Rue and Resonance.

Not all of these are straight point and click, nor are all of them good: http://puu.sh/3q0d1.png
If you liked Primordia, then I'm pretty sure you'll love Gemini Rue. I did, and I'm not that big a fan of point and click.
I would also recommend Machinarium, Resonance, and Botanicula.

tl;dr Gemini Rue

Syberia games are pretty good. I enjoyed them a lot back then. And now they're both on sale on Steam. You can grab the bundle for less than 4 bucks.

What about Edna and Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes? I just spotted that on a trade thread along with the Syberia games and could probably get all three for a key.

You do not need to be into Walking Dead to enjoy the game. it does not follow the comics or the tv show-

Well, it's more the reason I don't like the series is the same reason I assume I won't like the game. Too much drama to be a zombie series, too much zombie to be a drama...

It does follow the comics. Okay, technically, it's set in the world of the comics, but you don't follow Rick and his group around.

Set in the world of the comics is different from following them. There is one or two very little nods to the comics, but otherwise it is completely enjoyable in its own, no need to read the comics or to watch the show.

the cave has the problem solving feel of a point and click imo even though it's a 2d environment, I know it's not exactly what you are looking for but you might enjoy it.

The latest Sherlock Holmes offering is pretty darn good.

I know most of the Sherlock Holmes stories, though. I kind of assumed that would ruin the games for me since I'd know how to solve most of the problems. Am I wrong in that assumption?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Can't speak to the other games, but Testament is an original story based on Sherlock's character, but not any particular Doyle story.

So...no, you wouldn't know how to solve the problems, or even know what the plot was.

Worth a look, IMO. About 15-20 hours of gameplay.

I had the same experience after playing Primordia, what a great game that is.

So I went on a spree, picked up all the Blackwell's, finished the first one, they're ok hoping they ramp up in quality and length as they go on, 2 hours or so to complete.

Just finished A New Beginning, don't see the fuss personally, I didn't hate it, but it's VERY preachy and has perhaps the worst voice acting I've ever heard. However...Daedelic games are an amazing company for point and click, Deponia and Chaos on Deponia = win. Edna and Harvey also. Recommend them.

Broken Sword goes without saying really doesn't it? And Monkey Island?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I have the first Broken Sword game and I got Monkey Island the day it came out on Steam. I'll honestly probably end up picking up Blackwell anyway, just because it's on Tremorgames and I have some free coins.

And thanks for the info on A New Beginning. Voice acting is a huge turnoff for me. That's actually the main reason I didn't buy Just Cause 2. The acting was so terrible that I couldn't get past three or four story missions, and I can only imagine it being that much worse in a dialogue and story heavy game like a point and click... With all the Deponia recommendations, I'm definitely picking that one up, though.

The worst voice acting is probably in the first Black Mirror game. Loved the atmosphere in that game though, and played all three of them.

i've played the first three blackwell games and really liked them. also gemini rue. i'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with wadjet eye games, whether made by him or just published. i'm looking forward to playing blackwell deception, resonance, and primordia. i might even play the shivah if i can get away from steam long enough :) by the way if you want i have an extra desura key for the shivah -- add me if you want it (only for dovecoon)

check out samorost which you can play free online, and if you like that get samorost 2 and machinarium. they're a little different style (no words) but i liked them.

i didn't really enjoy ben there, dan that or time gentlemen, please.
