Humble were acquired by IGN, and while certain degrees of offer can send up some potential red flags, some companies use these kinds of incentives to get people hooked. If you think back to the early monthly bundles, everyone thought that the featured games (and quality of the bundles) were just to sucker people in, and that the quality would sharply decline once they got subscribers.
In this case, the hope may just be that they want more people to be exposed to it, so might subscribe on their own. Exposure is a key factor in subscriptions after all. I mean, I feel your doubts because the yearly subscription promotion is pretty juicy, and longer subscriptions always carry that element of doubt / risk, but there's also no harm in continuing with the usual per-month subscription.

Did you mean to say can rather than can't? As I understood it, you used to be able to redeem a Humble Monthly gift at a later time so it didn't necessarily have to be for the current Monthly bundle that was active at the time of the gift purchase but could be for a subsequent one instead.

Oh well, didn't get that mail. I got a lot of mail spam for that particular monthly, but not that one. Then again, that H1Z1 unlock seems so very unappealing to me, the bundle should be free just to make up for my time giving it away. Also, the $10's only for gifting away the bundle, right? So I'd have to go through the trouble to make an alt account in order to use that promotion for myself? I think I'll pass.

Eh, I probably would have done it if I had received the email. Plenty of stuff on my Steam wishlist is also available on Humble. And the credit will last long enough to be used during Winiter/Holiday sales.

You are correct - if you purchase a gift monthly subscription within the promotional time frame you will receive a $10 wallet credit that you can use on a Store purchase. I have checked your account and see that you did not receive the wallet credit properly, which may be because you purchased the monthly gift outside of the link in the email.
I have manually deposited to the credit into your account, and it is in the form of a coupon. The wallet credit does have an expiration of 30 days (Dec. 26) so please be sure to spend it before then!
