Wow, that was dumb naming it "Free Weekend" for a permanent game, when the world's #1 digital distribution site (Steam) uses the term "Free Weekend" already and it means that you can temporarily play for 3 days and can't keep the game. No wonder everyone is confused.

I seem to be missing the phrasing you're referencing.
Every news article I can find also lists "week" or "limited time", not one seems to indicate "Free Weekend" or "Trial"- the only indication of the latter is in the URL, and I can't find Free Weekend mentioned anywhere at all (which seems understandable, given that it's a week-long promotion, so it'd be confusing for multiple reasons if it was stated that way).

Gotcha. That is darn weird. I've gotta assume it was someone's typo or misunderstanding, rather than an intentional labeling, and like with me, it was overlooked by any of the other individuals who may have been involved in putting up the promotion.

Edit: Actually, googling it, it looks like that may just be the default label for the freetrial. page (with free weekends presumably being the typical usage of that section), so it was most likely simple oversight (as it's really easy to forget to change a page's headers).

Is it normal that I have the game in my library but my Order History is completely empty?
(GOG, Steam, and Origin do include free games in the order history.)
