I'm not a native speaker and understood it in a second. It's a standard text message short form, some people here put precise cultural references most people don't have (like some American Football player numbers or whatever, I remember seeing that once).

I think it isn't a matter of native language, people use English in a more casual way will have an advantage here.
I mostly use English in academic and business settings, and never shorten before to B4.
To be honest, I'm bad at homophone, so my brain thinks that fore and four aren't connected.
It doesn't help that you can't reliably guess the pronunciation of an English word from its spelling.

True. I close to never use "B4" (can't say never for sure, but at least close to), but I see it sometimes. I think it's also because I like puns and often think of homophones (in the couple languages I speak, and even across them). So, "before/b four" was just a piece of cake for me. 😅
I still think that a purely sound-based pun (not a cultural one) is much better than those obscure trivia things... There are always going to be unhappy people anyway. If it's a casual shortform, people using casual English will be at advantage. If it's the number in German/Spanish/whatever, it'll be people having at least basics in that language who will be at advantage. Etc, etc... And even in the anti-ninja thread, people at advantage will be the ones checking the thread regularly, or just plain lucky to be there first. You know?
Anyway I'm not trying to argue or something I understand (and agree) that it's not just a matter of native language or not.
