Someone created recently a whiskey thread. I've been foolish enough to state there that I prefer Rum, and got the answer I deserved: create a rum thread !

So here it is. Are there rum lovers here ? For my part, I don't say no to a ti'punch (white rum with lemon and sugar), but what's really putting me on is old rum. My all-time favorites:

  • Matusalem (7 years flavor is better than the 15 IMHO, didn't try the others yet) from Cuba / Dominican Republic
  • Don Papa from the Philippines (strong vanilla taste for the amateurs - really yummy !)
  • Santa Teresa (1796 flavor) from Venezuela

I have also good memories with some Diplomatico flavors. Also tried matured rum one time and found it really interesting, it's some kind of missing link between white rum and old rum. The flavor I tried was surprisingly good, but I can't remember the name (only that it came from Reunion island).

Recommandations from users in the thread:

Update 25 June 2017:

Threepw00d's recommended rums
It's really hard to order everything exactly, as sometimes it depends on your mood. Aside from my definite favourite rum, the rest of the list is a little flexible, but I recommend them all! :-) Please let me know if you recommend any interesting spiced or dark rums in particular, I'm always keen to try new ones.
Rumbullion! All 3 varieties of this superb rum and absolutely fantastic. Spicy and flavoursome, a clear favourite for me.
Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva
Dictador 20-Year
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera
Don Papa
Foursquare Spiced
Zaya Gran Reserva
Red Leg Spiced
Kraken Black Spiced

An ever growing collection
Why buy 1 when you can buy 2 for twice the price?
Ten exciting little sample bottles!

Hey, remember kids, drinking alcohol is bad, m'kay ?

Thanks a lot to Yirg, threepw00d and caitsith2 for the (ended) GAs

Picture below is Yirg's. It demonstrates how forum lurking can have an impact on what kind of things you bring back from foreign trips :)

I am liking Yirg more and more! :-)

Drinking Appleton in one's coffee at 10:00am while on vacation in Jamaica has to be one of life's nicer moments :-)

I wish I'd known to try this one: Wray and Nephew while we were there....

Dragon Zombie

1 1/2 oz Appleton Estate VX Rum
1 1/2 oz Coruba Dark Rum
1/2 oz Apricot Brandy
1/4 oz Franjelico
3/4 oz Orange juice
3/4 oz Lime juice
3/4 oz Pineapple juice
1/2 oz Demerara Cane Syrup
Crushed Ice
1/2 oz Wray and Nephew Overproof Rum

Fill a large cocktail glass 1/3 full with ice and add a few citrus slices
Shake the first 7 ingredients with the ice cubes in a cocktail shaker with crushed ice
Strain into a large cocktail glass with ice and citrus slices
Float the Wray and Nephew Overproof Rum on top
Garnish with a Brandied Cherry
This recipe is not for the faint of heart, and I suggest that one ration per evening is more than sufficient.

I like Grog (Kerosene, Propylene Glycol, Artificial Sweeteners, Sulfuric Acid, Rum, Acetone, Battery Acid, red dye#2, Scumm, Axle grease and/or pepperoni) or just black tea, brown sugar and rum :-)

It needs to be "aged" battery acid from a 1971 Ford Pinto though in order to get the full effect :-p

I'd definitely try that Dragon Zombie if offered, but preparing one looks like too much work, even if you have all the ingredients. I'm too lazy and normally just drink my rum neat :-)

mixed drinks are kind of like baking... they are a lot of measuring and a lot of ingredients but the results are delicious! I will say that neat is easier though!

Hello again my rum-loving friends. It's been a while since my last update, and I've tried a few new rums in that time:

Hamilton 86 Demerara - A dark and heavy rum, thick and sweet smoky flavour, and a nice long aftertaste. I didn't love it at first, it took a few tries before I enjoyed it properly.

Mount Gay Black Barrel - Disappointing. I can't remember which Mount Gay I tried a long time ago, but it was pretty good. So I bought this one in the hope it would be similar, but it wasn't. Didn't really taste like a good rum at all. Quite strong, slightly whisky-esque flavour. Couldn't enjoy it straight, and even when mixed the poor flavour still overpowers.

Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaica Rum: Navy Strength - Very strong in both alcohol and spice. For my tastes, it wasn't smooth enough to enjoy straight, though not bad with a mixer but I feel guilty about wasting a fancy rum like that. I'll try again over some ice and let it mellow a while perhaps.

Don Papa - As recommended by m0I0 in the original post! I also reviewed this somewhere on the last page or two, but only had a small sample bottle at that time. Well, I have been fortunate enough to make a friend that visits The Philippines regulalry on business, so I have been able to get a few bottles of this recently. It's really grown on me, I like it a lot. Very sweet so not for everyone, but I personally enjoy the smooth sweet taste. Sadly the bottle is already empty, in the photo... I don't know how that happened.

And what better way to get in the mood for rum than by acting like a pirate. Arrr!

do pirates prefer rum because it starts with "arrr"?

that should be a joke somewhere, but I'm pretty sure I just made it up

It's pretty difficult to buy rum where I live, but I can usually get my hands on Havana 7 year which is my go-to for affordable, delicious rum.

Good call. Havana have some nice solid rums.

Another favourite rum, Red Leg, which I reviewed on the last page maybe. It's one of the cheapest rums I can get, yet far superior to many others like Captain Morgan, Myers, Bacardi etc.

Why buy one when you can buy two at twice the price?

Bump for update, sorry to be late !
By the way, I got my hands on a bottle of Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva: it's delicious, way better than the "low cost" Diplomatico flavors (which are already good products).

The Reserva Exclusiva is also one of my favorites. Try drinking it from a snifter (cognac glass). For some reason it works great with this rum, compared to others (where I typically prefer a glencairn glass).

casts Resurrect +10 on thread

I got myself a Captain Morgan's Original Spiced on a whim, because that was the only one they had in the store. I don't know about rum at all, the only kind I've had before was Bacardi white. Now I'm more of a whiskey person, so I tried drinking it straight but that wasn't very good. Mixed it with Coca-Cola, which was better but still not very satisfying. I know I could try mixing with Ginger Ale next, but is there anything else I could try to get more out of this rather middling bottle?

Mix with ginger beer (doesn't have alcohol, has much stronger ginger flavor than ginger ale).

I recently discovered flor de cana, which is a very nice smooth rum

Personally, I tend to go for Bacardi's Oakheart rum. Cheap while also not feeling too "ethanol-y" like some other cheap rums can feel like.

I tend to just mix it with any type of cola. Whether it be Coke, Coke Zero, Pepsi or Pepsi Max, whatever.
