Someone created recently a whiskey thread. I've been foolish enough to state there that I prefer Rum, and got the answer I deserved: create a rum thread !

So here it is. Are there rum lovers here ? For my part, I don't say no to a ti'punch (white rum with lemon and sugar), but what's really putting me on is old rum. My all-time favorites:

  • Matusalem (7 years flavor is better than the 15 IMHO, didn't try the others yet) from Cuba / Dominican Republic
  • Don Papa from the Philippines (strong vanilla taste for the amateurs - really yummy !)
  • Santa Teresa (1796 flavor) from Venezuela

I have also good memories with some Diplomatico flavors. Also tried matured rum one time and found it really interesting, it's some kind of missing link between white rum and old rum. The flavor I tried was surprisingly good, but I can't remember the name (only that it came from Reunion island).

Recommandations from users in the thread:

Update 25 June 2017:

Threepw00d's recommended rums
It's really hard to order everything exactly, as sometimes it depends on your mood. Aside from my definite favourite rum, the rest of the list is a little flexible, but I recommend them all! :-) Please let me know if you recommend any interesting spiced or dark rums in particular, I'm always keen to try new ones.
Rumbullion! All 3 varieties of this superb rum and absolutely fantastic. Spicy and flavoursome, a clear favourite for me.
Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva
Dictador 20-Year
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera
Don Papa
Foursquare Spiced
Zaya Gran Reserva
Red Leg Spiced
Kraken Black Spiced

An ever growing collection
Why buy 1 when you can buy 2 for twice the price?
Ten exciting little sample bottles!

After running out of coke, I drank rum in its pure form... After 1 bottle, I threw up in the bathroom and decided to sleep it off right there...

What on earth made you drink a whole bottle? Good rum is for slow sipping of small amounts...

It's like you think that I'm some kind of a reasonable being!
Well, we were just having fun, drinking, while playing CS:GO and watching WWE.
I think one of the problems was that I was drinking dark rum... which just got me into an even worse state :D

Added a few new ones in my recent post. If you still update the main original post, could you add Ron Zacapa 23, Zaya Gran Reserva, Red Leg Spiced and Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva to my list, just before Rumbullion :-)

Earlier in this thread I wrote that I'm considering buying a bottle of Mount Gay XO. Well, I just bought the second bottle. It's that good. Flavorful, smooth, balanced, not too sweet. Really excellent stuff.

Here's a GA for the only game I have with a mountain...

Thanks for the feedback. I haven't been able to try this one yet, but it's high on my radar. One day it'll be mine :)
On a side note, someone made me taste the Kraken a few months ago and I liked it with its strong caramel taste. I'm also tasting since 2 days only something from Guadeloupe called Damoiseau XO. This brand is famous for making a decent local white rhum, their old rhum is interesting. I can't say it's my all-time favorite, but still something worse trying. It has a small bit of whisky background, at least that's how I feel it.
Cheers mate :)

I bought a bottle of Old Monk the Legend on a trip to India a few days ago. Let's just say that the bottle is more interesting and pleasing than the rum itself. It did get me to write a few short impressions of this and other rums I own (under username Matagalpa).

Also, here's a GA :-)

An odd and interesting bottle indeed! Too bad the rum itself didn't come to much.

I had a similar experience with Edward Gunpowder Spiced Rum. A lovely looking bottle which I had to buy to try, but sadly a very poor rum. Weak taste, overly scented and too much... something I can't put my finger on. But just not good. Has to be mixed to hide the sub-par rum unfortunately.

Always nice to see this old thread back on the front page once in a while :-)

As I had family visiting me from the UK, I was fortunate enough to get another bottle of my favourite rum, Rumbullion (as mentioned in more detail on the first page). Couldn't have asked for a better christmas present! Amazing stuff, which I am thoroughly looking forward to enjoying next week.

On new rums, I treated myself to a bottle of Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. It's a lovely rum, great for drinking neat. A beautiful dark goldy-brown colour, with a fantastic smell and flavour. It might have secured a spot as my number 2 rum! Though a couple more glasses over the festive season will determine that ;-)

Here's my rum cabinet as of a couple of weeks ago. A nice collection, soon to be topped with my Rumbullion. Just a question of how long I can make it last...

Now, be sure to enter this nice little GA from Mr. Yirg

I also bought a bottle of Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. Here's my short impression of it, as posted on rumratings.com:

9/10 for the complex wonderful aroma, 6/10 for almost liqueur-like sweetness. Altogether, 7.5/10 would be fitting. If they dropped the amount of added sugar from 40g/l to 20g/l it would have been perfect, possibly better than Zacapa 23 Solera. As it is it's too sweet. I really enjoy it poured into a snifter glass, as if it was a good cognac, and just smell it for a while.

One workaround for the sweetness is to mix it 50/50 with Mount Gay XO. The resulting rum is simply perfect.

Also, here's another giveaway. I don't have a key for any game that rum-related (well, I think there's only one), but spirits of anything sounds close enough ;-)

Glad you liked it too! I guess I like fairly sweet rums more :-)

Zacapa 23 is definitely a close rank for me.

I've tried quite a few more recently, I need to add some reviews here and add a sneaky little giveaway ;-)

Right then, time for a rum update!

Following from my post on the first page, my favourite remains unchanged, but here are a few thoughts on some new rums for me.

First up, the interesting looking bottle, but slightly disappointing contents of RL Seale. I had read some positive reviews and was looking forward to drinking it. It's not a bad rum per se, but it didn't blow me away, and for the price I don't think I can recommend it. It wasn't so smooth, quite a dry, woody taste, but a bit harsh. More enjoyable on some ice to take the edge off.

Next, Lemon Hart Navy Spiced, which was an ok mixing spiced rum. Again, not really enjoyable enough to drink on its own, but a pleasant enough mixing rum. In my country, it was a little expensive for the quality you get, so I wouldn't recommend it. But if you can get it cheap enough, it's alright.

Slightly better results from an unexpected contender; Red Leg Spiced is a very decent spiced rum! I can't believe I found this for so cheap, it was equivalent to about $15. This is a much better spiced rum than expected, and much better than many other expensive spiced rums I've tried. Can be enjoyed neat, though better mixed - which for this price is exactly what I bought it for. Good vanilla spice flavour, great with coke. If you can find it at a similarly cheap price, grab a bottle!

As a slightly more expensive rum, the Diplomatico Reserva was quite good, but somewhat disappointing for the price and especially when compared to the much more superior Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. There's only about $10 difference in price, but the latter rum is fantastic, whereas the former lacks the depth and flavour. It's still drinkable neat, but not as smooth, sweet or enjoyable.

A good smooth rum, Zaya Gran Reserva aged 12 years, surprised me. It's a blended rum, and they've mixed up several rums to create a very nice overall flavour. A good sipping rum that can be enjoyed neat.

The best of my recent rums was Ron Zacapa 23, which is a very decent rum indeed. Smooth and easy to drink, good solid flavour, perfect for drinking neat. Again, it's a little pricey, but not too crazy. I would order again if I find at a decent price, but for not there are too many other rums to try...

Thanks for reading. Here's a little giveaway, and don't overlook Yirg's giveaway either :-)

Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva delicious! perhaps not for those that love more traditional rums, but great if you like sweet rums.

Dictador 20-Year

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera

Kraken Black Spiced *dark and spicy, fantastic for a spiced rum and coke. A little heavy and not so great on its own though.

Foursquare Spiced

Zaya Gran Reserva

Red Leg Spiced super cheap, but a decent enough spiced rum inside! Perfect for mixers, and even drinkable on ice.

Thanks for the detailed post. It's best read with a glass of rum in hand ;-)

I added Red Leg Spiced to my wishlist. The RL Seale was already there, and despite your lukewarm opinion, will remain there. Too many good reviews to keep me interested, though I may need to adjust my expectations.

Yes, definitely try RL Seale yourself - everyone has different tastes, and I can't anyways agree with popular reviews. I just finished off my last bottle of Red Leg last night, so I shall have to order some more! Japan is not so big on rum, so the regular shops only carry a few, but I've found a couple of online stores that have a reasonable selection.

Not always. Many have added sugar, but the ones that don't (e.g. Mount Gay XO) aren't really sweet.

10 interesting rum samples to try!

Rather than ordering a bottle of my favourite, or taking a chance on another new one, I decided to order small sample bottles of several rums that I have been wanting to try. I'll report back in a few days...

Man, this is awesome! I'm really tempted to order a set or two myself. Have you order this from masterofmalt.com?

Edit: I just checked, and this site asks £43.74 for shipment to Israel. For this price, I might as well buy some full size bottles locally.

Yes, it's a great site, if you're in the UK..
My colleague was visiting the UK on a business trip, and I felt guilty ordering a heavy bottle of Rumbullion for him to pack in his suitcase to bring back... so I ordered two sample sets! Really nice idea, I can try some expensive and famous or different sounding rums to check I like them before forking out for the whole bottle. But yeah, sadly the postage to me in Japan is super expensive too. So I'll just be forcing them on to any friends and co-workers that visit the UK from time to time ;-)
