Recently i have been listening a lot to one of my favorite bands Dream Theater. I love the album "Images and Words", their second album and breakthrough back in -92 i think. Also love "Metropolis Pt. 2" and some other. Do you have a favorite album or song?

They started in the late 60s, beatles era and a bit after and made record up to 2000 something. Pretty persistent but they don't make records anymore AFAIK.

Used to listen to them a lot back in 90's and early 00's, but lost interest after "Six Degrees..." and "Train of Thought", which were kinda meh in my opinion.
"Awake" is my favorite album and... dunno, can't really name a single favorite song but I really like" Voices", "Scarred" and "Space-Dye Vest" from the same album, and "Trial of Tears" from "Falling into Infinity". "A Change of Seasons" as well.

Yeah, great. Some of their newer albums from 2011+ are also pretty good as well as "Black Clouds and Silver Linings" from 2009. Octavarium from 2005 has a great title song too. Just waiting for their newest album from 2019 to arrive in my mail.

My favorite songs are probably:
Home
Metropolis, Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper
Octavarium
The Dark Eternal Night

I've got Myung's setlist from a show back in 2007. My favorite album is prolly "Awake". Ever since Portnoy left they've been nowhere near their old stuff. Favorite song I'm not sure, but Change of Seasons is amazing (and long) -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZKrwJzGg0k.

Yeah, well. The new Drummer is also named Mike but maybe he is not as good, don't really know. I definitely enjoy Portnoy's work though.

I think it just lacks Portnoy's songwriting, producing and everything else that came along with him being in the band.

Mangini might be even more technically proficient, but that doesn't always correlate to better music. He seems like a great guy from everything I've seen.

If you want more bands that are somewhat similar check out DGM - "The Passage" album is fantastic, and Symphony X.
And if you wanna hear one of the best projects Labrie has worked on (along with many other great musicians) -> Ayreon - "The Human Equation" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncf6rXp9tNA&list=PLDp_PtuyOwCbt_MBte4PrbPbvygybjOP6&index=2

If you haven't heard of Arjen A. Lucassen's projects Ayreon/Star One do give it a listen. I found out about a lot of great bands/vocalists/musicians through his works.

If you haven't heard them already, you should also check out Liquid Tension Experiment. It was founded by the Dream Theater's drummer.

I have most of their albums on CD. Soon i have every studio album but three that i purchased digitally. Don't use Spotify anymore because i'd rather own my music. But i definitely don't find it bad to use it and i even paid for premium for a long while.

"Not so fun" fact: "On December 29, 1994, while vacationing in Cuba, LaBrie was stricken with a severe case of food poisoning from contaminated shrimp and while vomiting, he ruptured his vocal cords. He saw three throat specialists who all said there was nothing they could do except have him rest his voice as much as possible. However, on January 12, 1995, against doctor's orders, he was on the Waking Up the World Tour in Japan promoting Dream Theater's Awake album with his voice far from normal. LaBrie has said he did not feel vocally "normal" until at least 2002. He has also said that this era was a very hard time for him as a singer, and depression as a result caused him to consider departing from the band, although his bandmates supported him and urged him to stay. After the World Tourbulence tour, he discovered that his voice had fully returned. He said that his voice was fully healed by time and training." (copypasted from wikipedia because i'm lazy :P)

My own opinion is that after that incident his voice was never the same again and as a very big fan of the band that was very sad for me. Anyway, the voice is not really the best thing to listen in their music. They are simply some of the best players in their respective roles. Their continuos musical research and experiments are what make them one of the biggest band of the prog metal genre (also with the LTE band). I have to admit tho that after "six degrees" they went kinda downhill.

Love the band. I even own a '94 tour t-shirt of them... Still wear it from time to time. :)

I like the first album (without James Labrie) the most: When Dream and Day Unite with The Killing Hand and the Ytse Jam. Awesome tracks. The other old stuff is great too: images and words, awake, a change of seasons. From there on it's still great music, but not as good as the early works... imho of course. :)

Voted "Yes": maybe not my the most favorite but definitely a great band with a history. Heard of them the first time like 20 years ago, there was a musical program on the radio, late in the night. I used to listen to it and record good music. So one night they put DT on the air (A change of seasons). That's my story :)

I used to listen to DM a lot and saw them live twice, once with Portnoy and the other with Mangini.
I much prefer their early albums to what they put out now. I miss Portnoy's drumming and Kevin Moore on keys.
Favourite albums : Images and Words / Awake.
Favourite song: Take the Time

Edit: I prefer Symphony X these days and if you like instrumental music, I highly suggest the band Intervals (fronted by guitarist Aaron Marshall).

One from an album that doesn't get mentioned often

I really like another band that is criminally underrated, that I recommend if you like DT: -Shadow Gallery

Dream theater is great, what other prog bands are you into?

Pink Floyd mostly, even though they don't do metal. Scar Symmetry as well, it may classify as progressive metal, not 100%.

Can listen endlessly "A change of seasons" . I like James LaBree's voice.

I can suggest try to listen Everwood (they've got only 3 albums, but all are good)

I do not think the new Z generation knows about them. I do not expect more progressive or any metal band to appear compared to the 70s-90s.

Great band. Love them, but not the hugest of fans of James LaBrie the singer. It's cool that many of the double CDs have instrumental versions on the 2nd CD - I prefer those more. Feels to me like the singer is not in the same league as other members, and wish they had a heavier vocalist,

Personally i like LaBrie. Sure, he hasn't the deepest voice but i sure like his voice and tone and some of the lyrics are pretty ok. What i mostly like the group for, as you say, though, is the instrumental part.

who doesn't know them?
I used to listen quite a lot of it, as well as liquid tension and Some other similar bands that used to open stage.
Definitely a talented bunch, but their best albums (90s) were also some of the most corny stuff i ever heard, the lyrics overall meant little to nothing for me. Eventually i switched to Opeth and Steven Wilson
