As bad as the HB Monthly is for some, even I can't forgive this piece of trash being included in what's supposed to be a "curated bundle" of games.

Yes, it's that bad.

It got released today, so not HB's fault that the game received bad reviews instantly.

... which it appears to deserve.

I think it's entirely HB's fault for rolling the dice on a game that hadn't been released yet. Early Access titles are one thing. Something no one has seen from a studio with no track record is just flat-out stupid.

Switchcars also got released with March's Humble Monthly (which is also in early access, but doesn't seem abandoned) and it turned out to be a pretty good game, wouldn't pay more than 5 bucks for it if bought alone, because it's a very small game, but in a bundle like this i'm happy with it. I guess this time they either didn't check the game really or had nothing else to put in.

I am REALLY glad I kept Switchcars. I mean I rage Quit a lot when I get to the last leg of my journey only to be overrunned by worms and there appears to be a massive lack of vehicles at that time, but still I enjoy the journey up till then. Especially since they added animals and you can ride a baby alien worm.

you're right. maybe they shouldn't take risks like that. but still, i think it probably looked better for them as it finally turned out. the publisher has a pretty good track record on steam. this is the first game they publish with a negative user score. so i guess it was unexpected that this one fails so hard. maybe they thought it would be nice to have a brandnew game in the bundle (which i can more or less understand). i think deliberately choosing a bad game for the bundle is still worse than picking a completely new one without knowing if it's good. but yeah, it's not so nice for us, that its included in the bundle. ^^

It is supposed to be curated, so somebody at HB had to look at it and made the decision to include it in the bundle. YOu'd think that with a cat-in-a-bag bundle like this, they at least have the bare minimum quality control, like GOG has on their version of early access (they only include game they played and believe they are a) good enough and b) will be finished).

You guys got a point. I thought the game was a blind pick by HB, since it's newly released.

Glad I never fell for any of the cat-in-bag bundles yet. They never contained anything I really wanted.

Newly released on Steam. The beta has apparently been around for a while.

I used to think the worst decision HB made is to put Avalanche 2 or nova-111 into monthly bundle, because these two games went into IG cheap bundle very quickly, or the Cthulhu Realms dlc in July bundle. But I was wrong. How could they include a game that hadn't been released in the monthly bundle? With those mostly negative review, I could forsee this game will soon be included in IG happy-hour-on bundle.

Comment has been collapsed.

True, but even those first two games you mentioned had good reviews -- 89% and 92% respectively. So while they might not have been everyone's cup of tea, they at least were recognized for a certain level of quality in their feedback.

Yeah, I agree with you. First two games have very good quality. But for this Random Access Murder, I think that's too bad..

Wasted had not been released either when it was put in the monthly. It did not turn out as bad as this though.

oh, yeah. you are right. But HB shouldn't gamble on unreleased games' quality. They can't always win the bet.

Not as one of the main games at least. If they already have a well stocked bundle, then putting in an unknown is not so bad (like their exclusives). Considering the other games in the bundle, and the generally low value of it, it was the wrong bundle for that game. Had BLOPS 3 been the full game, then it would not have seemed so bad (even if I'm not actually interested in BLOPS 3).

It not being released is irrelevant - for a Curated bundle they should have done some curating.
And any obvious bad eggs would roll out of that testing process easily.

For this to get through, released or no. It had to have been a blind entry.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Depending on how far ahead they decide what's going to be in the bundle, it might not have been possible to actually test it properly. See my reply to luciferseraph91, above, for my thoughts on including it.

Which is ultimately still irrelevant.

They list their monthly bundle as a curated selection.
Adding a game without testing it, for whatever reason.
Goes against their own listing of it being a curated bundle.

As such it simply shouldn't have been added to the monthly bundle.

Any "Well maybe they couldn't..." is completely besides that point.
If it was a bundle that wasn't advertised as curated it would be a perfectly valid point.
But the Monthly Bundle isn't. It IS advertised as curated. Which ends that entire line of reasoning.

On top of that going "Well its a low value title, so it doesn't matter." is a very slipperly slope line of reasoning.
What. We can just add some trash as filler and be done with it?
We know where that train is heading...

The point here not just being whether the bundle is bad.

But that a title was blindly added to what is described as a curated bundle.
Since even the most cursory examination would've flagged this title as being a total crapshoot.

Curated simply means that someone selects what's going to be in it. It does not mean that someone had the chance to play it. One might very well say that they "should" play it, but it's not what curated means.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Curation means someone selects it based on content and thus quality is implied...
If you haven't had a chance to play it you CAN'T by the very definition curate it.

The nonsense interpretation you give there means everything that exists is curated because someone chose to make it.
Suffice it to say that that will get you a severe case of misleading advertising...

Words have meaning, your interpretation would render that meaning pointless as everything that exists would be 'curated' by your interpretation.

I gave you a dictionary interpretation. You might not agree with it, but well, then you'll start to redefine words to mean what you want them to mean. Remember, even the most terrible of groupees bundles are curated. They're not curated well, but they are still curated. And yes, any time someone makes a choice in regards to what's going to be included, then it's curated.

select, organize, and present (online content, merchandise, information, etc.), typically using professional or expert knowledge.

It does not say they need to test it, nor that it needs to be good. And "typically" means that this is normally the case, but it does not always have to be so. And even then, the curator of the monthly bundle might have used his/her "professional" knowledge and picked the game based on what they thought looked good after early showings or a strong pitch from the developers.

What is Humble Monthly?

A highly curated subscription bundle of our favorite games at one fixed price.Join over 100,000 Humble Monthly subscribers and discover a variety of recent hits, hidden gems, and timeless classics.

and....

Humble Monthly is a new kind of bundle that delivers top-notch PC games straight to your inbox, once per month. If you’re interested in joining, head on over to the Humble Monthly tab at HumbleBundle.com

It is very much implied both by choice of words and by further conditions that they're not just throwing darts at a board and picking up random new releases blindly.

It is very much implied both by choice of words and by further conditions that they're not just throwing darts at a board and picking up random new releases blindly.

And that's not the only way a bad game can end up in a bundle like this. There are other ways. Whoever was in charge of curating this bundle might have played an early build of it, and thought to themselves "this is going to be great once it's done!" and thus allowed it into the bundle, or they might have seen some screenshots & videos from it, and thought it looked like it had a lot of potential. Both of these would still make it highly curated, you might just question "how" it's curated.

If you're going to go out of your way to find excuses for something - sure...

That "COULD" have happened. It is also possible that they were on a drunken bender and were just throwing darts at a board to select theit titles. Who knows right?

I mean, its not like there's such a thing as false advertising - so repeatedly delivering a product that doesn't match your advertised content is hardly going to result into repercussions.

It would not be false advertisement, because it's so vaguely worded. You don't like them putting games like this in the bundle, I don't like them putting games like this in the bundle, but that still does not mean that it's false advertisement, or that it's not curated.

Monthly is not a good bundle, right from the start
you should get it only if you know, that you want to pay 12 USD (or a bit less with coupon) for the game that is revealed

Man this was my first HB monthly bundle. I decided to finally pay that atrocious price because I thought they might include better games than Blops 3 starter pack which was an early unlock.

But NOPE, apparently that's the best one they got. Unsubscribed as soon as I saw the full games list.

As someone who thought last's months bundle was meh I was wrong. It makes sense they are trying to do the whole (Longer than 1 month) subscription since it allows people to HAVE to pay for more than a month and not be guaranteed to get anything good. This bundle is a huge disappointment and next month (Even though I've seen a full playthrough of SOMA) is a definite purchase since that one will have at least one game that interests me.

If they bought cat in a bag - that's their own fault. If they knew about game quality - they shouldn't put it in a bundle. In either way - they fucked up and lost trust of some customers.

I really don't understand why anyone ever has or continues to buy the monthly bundles. There is a reason they are making you pay for it before you are allowed to see what it contains. They do this to take advantage of their customers because they know they will make a lot less money if they didn't force you to preorder it. They are not selling these bundles based on the games they contain, they are selling them based on humans being greedy, reckless, hoarders, and gamblers.

Don't worry, I bet the next one will be really good :)

I've bought a few monthly bundles (Last one I didn't get, but August I did get.) I though July was meh, but it seemed alright since it had a few WL games which is what usually makes me feel it's worth it since I can trade the rest to get more WL games or sell them for some currency to buy WL games on sale, BUT this month's one was really shit in my opinion. I mean Final Cut and (If you like that thing) Black Ops 3 (Which you can upgrade to the Full Version for an extra $15) are decent enough, but I already own Final Cut and COD doesn't interest me at all.
