Am I the only person in the world who like sees a sale and is like must buy? This HB sale is killing me. I can't, I need to buy but I treated myself to Dragonball Xenoverse and The witcher III, and DA:I dlc, and well all the GAs. My wallet has taken a beating, and still there are games that I want, not that I have any time to play them but you know just to be there when I do want to play them. It's not like I can't afford a few more games, the ones that I want are cheap because you know sale, but I think I need to take a step back and not go broke because I see a good deal.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, there is a 45% price difference between NZ and Europe, so they bulk buy from me and sell it on their site to Europeans for likely a lot more profit that I make. :P

Not really a problem with me though, I didn't even have the cash for a single copy to start, so they have paid first for every copy.

Yeah. Though soon I'll be spending it. My birthday in a month. Already going to give away Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (because that made me all the cash, so I figure why not), and I might even do a Fallout 4 pre order, since I was gifted that earlier this week. Less likely though, more expensive here.

Nice, Happy Early Birthday! Cool to be able to treat yourself for it :)
I need to find a way to get MGS V myself. I've never played a MGS game, but everyone keeps posting screenshots and videos on my feed...making me want to try it out. I'd like to see how it runs, and it'd be cool to do a review on a game from a series I've never played. New territory, so to speak.

Also: Quiet. :3

Because they have been doing bulk, its been 102 CSGO keys for 5 copies, though if they gave cheaper keys, I got more of them. A single copy, I'll chat to you about it to hash out a price.

A year ago, It was two AAA releases a year with a few on sale games during the steam sales, but then I discovered GMG and humble bundle and it all went down hill from there. The worst part about this is the back to back sales. First Humble, then Steam, then GMG.

I just set ridiculous bars on how cheap games have to get before I'll buy them. It means I never have any of the latest games (unless there's a crazy GA or something), but somehow over the 8 years I've had my Steam account I've managed to accumulate a few games (yeah, a good number are bundle fluff nowadays, but most aren't)...and honestly, as you said for yourself, I rarely have time to play much right now with family and work. I must be doing alright at resisting, since I have 300+ items on my Steam wishlist (plus a handful I want that aren't available on Steam), and I haven't even been keeping up on new releases now that GreenLight has flooded the market with so much...less than A-level stuff.

In practice, I use http://isthereanydeal.com fairly religiously for games on my wishlist, setting very low thresholds and then just not buying until I get that magical alert one day that my threshold has been hit for some game I've been waiting two years for...it's kind of like winning a GA on here. :)

So, I guess my secret is changing what I get excited about - instead of it being about having the game in my library, it's about getting the game stoopid cheap when I know everyone else paid crazy money for it! :D

You're being exploited by your cognitive bias, my friend. In the end, it doesn't matter how great a deal is (unless it's free) if you aren't going to play the game. At a certain point game acquisition will have stripped your ability to invest time in games and get any utility out of the game.

Also, a very important thing to remember is that most of the stuff you buy on sale (instead of in a bundle) will go on sale again, for the same price or less, within a reasonable time frame.

So, the rational approach to acquiring games in this digital age is excepting extremely deep discounts (bundles) if you are not certain that you are going to play the game within a couple months, do not get it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just make up a few rules and abide by them.

Sample rules:
1.) I will buy only one game at a time.
2.) I will not buy a game unless I will drop every other game and play this one immediately.
3.) I will not play this game until I have finished X in my backlog.
4.) My backlog is too big. I shouldn't buy any games.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I would love to make rules like that for myself, but I definitely don't have the self control. Oh well.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm actually finding it easy to pass on sales what with a good backlog of games to play anyway. Unless it is something I really want and/or an amazing deal, I often will just reason: "I will just wait for the next (better?) sale or for it to hit a bundle". There were a bunch of things that interested me during this Humble Store Summer sale for example, but I barely got anything. Most of them will probably end up in bundles sooner or later anyway given how fast that machine churns these days.

They "saved" me money today. I added WWE to my cart because it was $12.49. I let it sit for a few hours and then went back to buy it. It wouldn't let me as it said they changed the price to almost $17. :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Right? I noticed that as well I was going to get NBA 2k15, but then I was like nah better not, but ooh look WWE is like 13 dollars maybe I should. They raised the price and I was like well it's not worth that price so I'm good. Like I ended up buying Dragonball Xenoverse and Witcher III for a lot cheaper then I should have. I paid like 52 usd for both, so it was roughly 26 bucks each.

I have purchased wayyyy more bundles than I would like to admit, especially given my tumultuous job status over the years. I reached a certain point where I realized I would probably never play most of the ones I owned, and finally chilled out a bit, but sometimes I still go nuts. I think each person has to learn the lesson themselves, though, as each of us probably has a different "breaking point".

First reaction: WANT TO BUY!!
Second reaction: It will be on sale again later.
Result: No money spent. :v

I think your problem is that you don't have enough games yet...
You grow complacent once you have like.. 1,000 :3.

I try to think of all the games I bought on sale (or several sales ago) that I still haven't played yet.

It doesn't always work ;-) , but it helps me realize that a) yeah, it's a good deal, but b) that doesn't mean I'll play it. (because backlist is so long I regularly find I own games I don't remember buying).

My core problem, I think, is I'm sometimes more attracted to getting "the deal" than I am in playing the game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

"Keep it simple" is my personal rule. Buy only during the Steam Sales and always set a limit on the money you afford to spend.

One way or another, either Steam will come up with some great sales (either by mistake or not) or one of the other stores will try to overcome Steam's Sales and eventually you will find a big deal. I have bought the vast majority of my games during the Steam Sales even if i was never intended to play those games and the only reason i bought them was because they were on a big sale.

A lot of games go on sale at different times and from different stores/places. So if you pass a sale for any reason whatsoever then chances are that the game you wanted will pop up for sale again at a later (maybe more opportune) date. :-)
