When it comes to Pokemon games

Depends how I'm playing for that run, regular or Nuzlocke challenge.

I catch one of everything I can but I usually keep using the same 6-10 pokemon until after the elite 4.

I catch everything i dont have and chose a good team from them and stack others at PC and i sort the boxes for their types.

And when there is nothing left to do try to catch the rare ones or legendaries

I play like "gotta catch them all"!

PS: I only saw a shiny zubat when I played pkmn red

In the beginning I always try to catch one of each which I can get in the area and try to keep them all same level. But the more you progress, the more you can catch...and from then on I just stick to my normal six and that's about it.

And to be honest, they ruined the fun in training your Pokemon anyways when they introduced the whole breeding and shiny crap...

I only catch ones I need for my team, HM slaves (Golduck lol), rares/shinies and ones that really look cool.
I never had anyone to play the games with, so there's no point in trying to complete the dex.

Also, as I live in Poland, event pokes are a bitch to get and even if I had people to play with, I still would have a hard time "catching 'em all".

I tried catching as many as I could always, but it was in White where I actually changed my party.
White, Crystal, and Emerald are by far my favorite entries in the series.
