Wrong again. Linux is not OS family. Linux is a kernel. GNU/Linux is OS family. Or just GNU, if you don't care on what kernel it works - there is also GNU/kFreeBSD. For example - Android has Linux kernel too. But it's not GNU. Well, it contains some parts of GNU, but not enough to be called GNU/Linux.

define "person, who says he don't use GNU and puts a links to three GNU systems and tells everyone to install it, and then recommends them use GNOME".

Yes, I know what you meant. But I disagree suggesting Linux on a gamer site as it just does not run most games.
Also, the real problem of Linux is present in your opening post: the n+1 thing. Ego over consensus practically everywhere, with the notable exception of the kernel itself. An OS with single digit (%) desktop penetration, in dozens/hundreds of different flavours. Far from what people mean on 'sane'.

since i have to do an update anyway (didnt used it for over a year now) i actaully already thought about trying something new.

Its crazy how great Ubuntu runs on any machine even on antique ones (not just since recently).
As for privacy, that game is over once connected to the web. Even so, its best not to let everyone who is
capable/willing out there to pull you over the barrel - > phone(s), some tablet, and the internet of "things".

I have both Ubuntu 15.10 and Debian 8.7.1 in my VM and I love messing with them.

I'm all for new init, but systemd is terrible monster eating everything. So, openrc for now. Besides, servers are restarted seldom and I use suspend on the laptop (my main and only machine). Compiling new kernel is usually the only reason to reboot :-)
But you know all that. And of course I'm installing Ubuntu for friends (installing Funtoo would be cruelty, hahahahaha)

Aw c'mon, that's just misleading. I'd say that being able to master CL / bash is reason enough to make anyone happy and self-confident :)

Been there, done that. Had triple boot machines set up to boot into Win / Linux / MacOS as they were needed. As much as I sympathise with the GNU/FOSS ethos, at the end of the day, if the software that's my bread and butter won't run on Linux, tough luck, it's back to an OS that does. Gotta get shit done and gotta get paid.

[opinion on at about 75% of full blast]
If I need a system to just work and continue to work, I'll stick to what I've been using for the past 35 years: BSD.
I'll buy hardware that works with it rather than put up with crappy 3rd party drivers, and I know what I'm doing with it enough not to rely on being hand-held by some fragile packaging infrastructure (I've got a compiler and I know how to use it...).
On the other hand, if I want a system to play games on, I'll just use a disposable system that runs most of them (that usually means a proprietary OS, but it's only games, right...).
YMMV ;-)

I've had my fill of Linux thanks. Love it on a server, hate it on a desktop/laptop.

I used some linux distros in the past but in the end switched back to windows mostly because of games.
That said, is ubuntu still using unity as an interface? I remember switching to kubuntu after getting annoyed by how awkward that thing was.

I don't think glossy and intuitive are really synonyms.
It's still ugly.
Best-looking OS was Windows 3.1. Simple. Elegant. Intuitive. Glossy. Regal. Complete.

Well... At least you could close it (Win3.1) easily when you wanted to play a game :-)
(In case of Win9x you were supposed to reboot (though editing win.com could make it simply return to DOS instead of halting the computer), and WinME commited harakiri immediately when you started its DOS mode)

Win98SE was fun.
This one time, I had four days of uptime. Four days!
