if you go for a job that requires zero customer interaction, then they shouldn't care at all imo. now i mean i can sorta understand if you are after a job that would require you to communicate with customers regularly, but that's still discrimination really.
sorry, i don't do voicechat personally though, just had to say my opinion on the matter

Well ... i guess if you are looking for a person for a job you are providing you are free to apply any standarts you see fit?..

depends on which state in the U.S. really.. most would consider that discrimination and the employer was technically breaking the law.

race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex, disability, or age <<-all discrimination and against the law for employment

I found this whole concept a bit dodgy honestly. It's same you choose your partner. You are free to apply your standarts.. Same should logically be okayish in such situation as well. At least from logic standpoint. But yeah laws state that you cant discriminate. When again proving that you are or are not discriminating is... tricky.

no it's not the same as choosing your partner, obviously you are free to choose who you want there. one is against the law, the other is not. logic has no place in the law. i wasn't meaning they should lawyer up and try and sue or anything, you're right, its hard to prove. i just meant technically speaking it would be illegal in most states.

Yes ofc ,i'm just speculating here more than stating anything concrete. I mean if for example i was offering job for a lumberjack and this slim and flimpsy dude comes in. I would refuse him because i need fit and strong people for this job. Am i discriminating him or simply looking for a people best fit for a job i need done? I'm in a sense discriminating him ..but not for sake of it.

if you specifically said "you're too small" then yeah, techincally speaking it would be discrimination. you're allowed to feel that way, and deny them for that reason, but legally speaking you cannot tell them that is the reason.

And this is there this gets really confusing (for me atleast). I refuse him for his physical trait but that trait in this case is his skill. If i would refuse a nuclear plant safety inspector position for a dude who previously only worked in a gas station...? He doesnt posses skills this job needs. Yeah:D

i'm not a lawyer, sorry. i cannot really try and explain how discrimination works. but if you don't state a "reason" then there is no possible way you'd be breaking the law.

Yep,without knowing a law this shit can get really confusing. Thanks for a chat anyway:)

now if the employer simply said no. there would be no discrimination of any type. but they specifically said because of their accent.

employment discrimination is incredibly difficult to prove unless the person doing the discriminating is a fucking moron and actually states it's because of discrimination

that's why i said if they are required to communicate with customers.. then sure, i'm sure there would be a way to keep it legal and non-discriminatory. but if they were applying at McDonalds as a fry cook, then they shouldn't even have to have a tongue to do the job. ;)

Well, if it's hard for people to understand you why should they employ you when there are other better candidates?
Not only customers but also colleagues.
Also, it's nice of them to tell him the specific reason so he can fix the problem.
If they didn't care at all what happens to bytebyster they would just have said they decided on a more qualified candidate.

its fine to deny them for that reason, just don't tell them that is the reason.. no law broken, problem solved.

Also, it's nice of them to tell him the specific reason so he can fix the problem.

as nice as that maybe, it doesn't change the fact that it's discriminatory and against the law.

If they didn't care at all what happens to bytebyster they would just have said they decided on a more qualified candidate.

that's where i agree, just state there are better candidates and thank them for their application and move on. but to tell them their accent is the reason is again.. illegal.

Where is that illegal? Which country are we talking about? It's not the same all over the place and a heavy accent isn't something that can't be fixed unlike other things.

if they tried to show you intonation, in order to alter any accent you have, then you would have to listen to them to undestand where you were getting it wrong - with their wonderful accent, if indeed Brummie (or that area), you would end up with the oddest new accent in Christendom :) - that is why ;-P

What kind of job was it? Unless it was as a receptionist or something, it seems odd to reject you on that alone. I'd be willing to bet most places (again, depending on the job) wouldn't care that much.

customer care for at&t and such i cant do other jobs as most of them are not hiring or ask for experience which i do not have also my qualifications are low

Fair enough. I feel it may be a valid request then, with that level of customer interaction.

I might suggest watching/studying movies/TV more to get a better idea of common pronunciation and whatnot. Having friends point out mistakes may be helpful but 15 minutes at a time probably won't cut it :)

Good luck to you either way!

based on my experience with AT&T customer service, I'm surprised they require you to know english.... or even be able to speak.

Just watch some English job interview videos and learn from them :>

On a serious note, 15 minutes are not quite enough for any kind of elocution lesson. Maybe you can find some elocution videos with pronounciation exercises?

If your accent is heavy you need to visit classes. Either online or rl where people can hear and correct you.

Judging by the region restricted giveaways you made, I assume you're from India, right? If that's the case, then learning proper pronunciation will be like completing Dark Souls without dying. Look at Raj from BBT and how much time he's spent with English. You can tell he's Indian as soon as he opens his mouth :D
