Not sure. I usually play older indies, so basically, I'm gonna play the indies from this year in 2014-2015. :D
(Don't Starve is sooo overhyped ... It's really not that good. Don't get me wrong, it's not that bad neither, so that's why I call it overhyped.)

Honestly, it bores me to tears. You don't do anything interesting. It's just "Let's take Minecraft, remove the very small amount of things that are fun in it, change it to a really weird bird's eye angle view, hype the shit out of it, and call that our game!"

OH MY FUCKING GOD, ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE "Just because you dont like it doesnt mean its bad" IDIOTS. Okay, let me walk you through this.
If because I don't like it doesn't mean it's bad, then just because you like it doesn't mean it's good. However, if a mass majority doesn't like it, it's bad, and if a mass majority likes it, it's good.
Fucking Double Standards. Besides, If I say it's bad, that means I THINK IT'S BAD. Just how if you like it, YOU THINK IT'S GOOD. With "Good" and "Bad", there is no fact. It is all opinion. Therefore, you CANNOT say that just because I don't like it doesn't mean it's bad. That's basically the definition of bad.
Also, I know what overhyped means. Now, just because I don't like it and a lot of people do, it doesn't mean it's overhyped. This is true. However, this game was fucking overhyped anyways. It was basically as hyped up as a AAA, just without the budget for marketing that a AAA has. For what it was, it was overhyped. Just like how Minecraft is overhyped. Just because I don't like it and call it overhyped, doesn't mean it isn't overhyped.

Oh god another kid who thinks randomly insulting people over the internet makes him cool.
No, your opinion is just YOUR OPINION. You, just like me, are just another internet random, if you don't like it no one cares just like, if I like it no one cares. The fact that you don't like it just means that you don't like it. Calling something bad just because you don't like it only makes you look stupid. And no, the fact that i bothered to respond does not mean i care, it just means i'm bored and mildly amused by your blind hate.
And no, it's not overhyped, if people love something they will usually tell other people about it so again, the fact that people talk about it only means it's good. You know, just like you probably tell your friends about stuff you like. But hey, it's always cool to hate popular stuff right?
Comment has been collapsed.
Okay, then what is your definition of bad? You cannot use anything that is subjective or opinionated in your argument. Give me that and I will accept what you said.
Also, I did play Don't Starve, and I do hate it. Just like how I played Papers Please and Borderlands 2 and loved those. May be cool to hate popular stuff, true, but don't go pointing fingers or implying that you are

There are standards of innovation, gameplay, replayvalue, graphics by which you could say the game is NOT bad imo.

To be fair, I do think it's possible to say that a game is bad, or at least flawed, with some validity. It is possible to point out substandard game design or illogical choices on the part of the developer, but it's far harder to call something good since that really is just a matter of resonance.
That also doesn't mean that just because something has flaws or substandard design that it shouldn't be played. Odin Sphere is one of my favorite games of all time, but I'd be the first to admit that it's flawed as hell.

To me, a flaw is when the developer makes a design choice that is not logically consistent with the stated design goal of the game.
If I had an art teacher who told me to produce a realistic painting, and I came up with one that had royally screwed up perspective and messed up anatomy, he would tell me I failed and that the work was flawed.
Similarly, if a game designer wants to make an action game who's goal is to be "exciting" and then includes a section where you wait around in an empty room for 50 minutes before being allowed to progress, I'd say that that's a flawed design choice (an extreme example, yes, but to illustrate my point).
Now obviously, there's probably SOMEONE out there who thinks twiddling your thumbs for 50 minutes is exciting, but the whole concept is illogical and irrational enough that most normal people will identify it as in-congruent with what the game is supposed to accomplish and what it is advertised as.

Sure, but to that person who enjoys twiddling their thumbs for 50 minutes, that game may be good. Therefore, the whole basis around what is good or bad doesn't work.
The definition of good or bad relying on the opinion of a majority is extremely flawed.(hehe)I will accept that the definition is fucked up, but the "Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad!" argument is just childish and obnoxious.

I already said that bro.
My point is, even though it's not objective, it's at least logical. A logical examination of the concept of excitement does not produce anything related to twiddling ones thumbs, so unless you are already somehow biased towards it (like you had an experience with sitting in a waiting room that was somehow exciting), then there is really no explaining WHY that segment is in there. On the opposite side of the coin, there are many, many reasons why people who are not biased towards that particular choice will find it unenjoyable and boring.
Of course good and bad are still subjective, but criticism can, and should, be based on logic. You can't just take a well designed game and tell everyone you know it's shit without a fair trial. If I tell someone I think a game is bad, I tell them WHY I think it's poorly designed, I tell them WHAT design choices are poorly thought out and incongruent with the stated design goals of the game. After that, they can make their own choices based on their own personal preference, but at least they know the logic behind my criticism of the game.

I don't know when these were released, but FTL: Faster than Light, Papers Please and Don't Starve are all contenders as far as I am concerned. Can't pick just one though! Gnomoria and Kerbal Space Program are others that would be contenders, but they aren't released yet...

As MrD said, I play older indies for the most part, so I really haven't a good idea, but from what i have seen so far, "Papers, Please" looks pretty interesting, like Miasmata and Monaco..
Love the fact that you have posted your supposed winner and your personal one. ^_^

I have Rogue Legacy but haven't dove into it yet. Out of what I've played, Papers, Please is such a great idea and as it goes on gets insanely detailed. I just got Gunpoint today and its great so far. I want Dust:Elysian a lot, but have not gotten it yet. If picking today, I'm going Papers, Please but that can change considering there's some I haven't played yet, including Don't Starve.
I also really want to play Spelunky.

I'm so ambivalent about Don't Starve, its really only something I can play with someone else to laugh over how bullshit it can get. Can I vote for Dust, even though I haven't played it yet?

Rogue Legacy was pretty amazing.
I want to say Bleed also, but I'm not sure if the non steam version was launched before 2013.

If I go by ones I have played the full versions of ( non demos ) and have came out this year? Then I can not vote for any :(
However if demos are included. Rogue Legacy :P
If this was about last years then I could make a list and.. probably would be hard pressed to pick one from all the rest.
EDIT
Wait. Stardrive, Dungeonland and Payday 2 are indie games? If you would consider them indie.
Then I would say Payday 2 would win despite the fact that I do have issues with it right now.
I have yet to fully understand Stardrive and do not have all that much fun the little bit I have played it. My opinion on that game might change once I play it more and hopefully understand the game better. If it was turn based I think I would like it a heck of a lot more than I currently do.
Dungeonland would come in 2end. I had fun playing it with my brother. ( We ended up playing his copy via "hotseat" sort of play. I used my controller while he used his keyboard+mouse. )

Want to say Dust, but it's only the PC release that came out this year, not the game itself (which came out last year on XBLA for Summer of Arcade), so... considering that, I'm probably gonna go with Gunpoint (granted, I haven't played it yet, but I've seen some gameplay at least and it looks pretty fun and interesting), Don't Starve (a bit tedious, I admit, and a total time sink, but plenty of stuff to do at least), or maybe Legend of Dungeon (also haven't played it, but it looks like plenty of fun, especially with friends, given the gameplay I've seen)

For me it was a fun sandbox game, it was fun setting up the door control to set of some guards gun.

A year is too long for me, but right now Ring Runner: Flight of the Sages is amazing

So with talk about Game of the Year, there's basically 3 contenders- Bioshock Infinite, The Last of Us, and Grand Theft Auto V. BUt what do you think is the Indie Game of the Year? The Indie Game released this year that shines above all else? List what you think the top 3 contenders are (Even if none of those three would be your choice for GOTY, because that's usually the case with GOTY games) and then list what you think would win out of those three, and then your choice of what wins
Top 3 Contenders-
Winner: Don't Starve
My Winner: Papers, Please
Edited my Top 3. I forgot about Dust when making the list, but now that I'm reminded, I remembered how hyped it was and how well of reviews it got.
Edit 2: Apparently Dust is 2012
