Looks are deceiving. I'll definitely give it a go someday and if it's good then why not? Most people adapted to Motion controls, touch controls etc so this won't be too far.

Touch controls still suck balls. I mean, I will be trying out the Steam Controller. But it hasn't convinced me yet

I'd buy the shit out of it.A controller that created specially for PC ? HELL YEAH.

I was thinking about buying a XBOX controller but since I don't have XBOX I'd never pay that much for such a thing.

It was built to emulate mouse movements on a console platform, not for pc users. The only reason to use a controller for the pc is for games that play better with them (racers/fighter). Seeing as how you are playing a pc and already have a mouse, you may as well get a wired 360 pad, itll be cheeper.

What makes XBOX cont. better than Steam cont. ? I mean shouldn't we wait and see which is better ? Since XBOX cont. is 75$ in my country, I really don't want to pay that much for a simple controller that I'll only use in 3-4 games ...

"It was built to emulate mouse movements on a console platform, not for pc users."

Nice opinion you got there that you are passing as a fact....

That isn't an opinion. It WAS built to emulate mouse movements on the steambox, which is a console. You can use it on a PC but it wasn't made for it.

Yeah except the steambox is made to play steam games, which surprise! are PC games or PC ports at worst.

As vivalagrunt stated, you missed the point.
The Steambox is indeed a PC (like all other consoles anyway) but is made to be used as a Console plugged to the TV in the livingroom or wherever you usually play the console.

Basically you play your steam games on a console-like PC, thus the need for something that is both a controller and a mouse.

"not for pc users"

Actually thats not even an opinion when I thinking about it, its flat out wrong...

The problem with mouse and keyboard is the use of keyboard for movement. You can't do anything interesting with movement in a first person or third-person game when you have to deal with such rigid control restraints. WASD are either pressed or not pressed, and having a modifier key for run/walk/sprint/etc still doesn't give you a full range of motion for truly immersive movement.

Personally I can't wait for this controller. I have my PC hooked up to my TV and while I already own a 360controller that works great for a lot a games, there's still plenty that it doesn't work with.
It'll be great to play absolutely any game from the comfort of the couch on a nice big screen with sweet graphics.

Get a xbox controller for the PC, its worth it and you can play most of the games with it (if you have binded the buttons for it) and it dosent need to be a Xbox controller it can be a copy made by another company
i got this and it works as good as a original xbox controller

I would need to use it pretty extensively first, but assuming I like it it's something I'd want to own, yes. Something to replace the mouse and keyboard on the couch for games that don't work well with regular controllers would be nice.

Yes + because it's from VALVe (and if it will be fully compatible with other Linux distros, than double yes)

Then it will be an instant buy! :3

Personally I wouldn't buy anything like this without either reading some independent reviews or trying it out first.

Looks interesting though, and if it's well received, why not? Obviously the pixel-perfect combination of Mouse & Keyboard is unbeatable for some game types like FPS, RTS, etc, but other genres are much better suited to a controller, and I'm willing to give anything a go unless it's clearly a dud.

Definately buying it, it may look strange but it is made by Valve, a company known to release their products finished and with an idea behind the product.

What I have seen so far looks very promising and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

I'm tried to companies trying to "innovate" on standard controller design. I don't want a touchpad on my controller. I hate them on laptops, why would I like them anymore in my hands? Just give me the standard two analog sticks, one D-Pad, and maybe add a few more ergonomically placed buttons.

I mean, I signed up for the beta and would give it an honest chance to change my mind if I were selected, but without Valve shipping it to my door and saying "Here ya go!" I don't really feel it's worth the investment or the effort to go find someone who's bought one.

If it works well enough and isn't too expensive, I don't see why not. I might want something to provide analogue input for stuff like steering in racing games, and if it seems to be a good solution, I will probably want to get one.

One question: Will it be ONLY compatible with Linux/SteamOS, or Windows as well?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It will most likely work on Windows, the majority of Steam users have Windows, so making it SteamOS/Linux exclusive would be crazy at the very least.

Permalink

Steam is mainly used on Windows, so obviously it will be compatible with Windows. Steam controllers, SteamOS and Steam machines work all independently, regardless if you have 1 of the 3 things or all of them.

Permalink

But they're developing them for SteamMachines, which run SteamOS. Considering that, I'd say it's a pretty legitimate question.

I'll probably buy it because just the idea of being able to play any game with a controller seems really nice. I'm mostly a keyboard+mouse gamer, but what I dislike most about gamepads is having to switch all the time if I'm jumping from game to game. With the SteamController you could just find good configs for all games and be done with it. It sounds great on paper.

There's two things I'd need before I can decide if I will/won't.

One of those things is price. I'm hoping it's $60 or less.

The other things is reviews. Granted, I wonder how many will be "different is bad! I used it for half an hour and wasn't used to it by then so it must be terrible!". Sadly, I doubt I'd be able to get an hands on use before buying it, which would be nice.

I would. I do like to game with a controller, but I'm not very good with joysticks. I also like how you can individually configure the two touchpads (for example, from acting like a joystick to acting like a mouse) to fit each game.
