An impersonator is a person who tries to scam somebody by impersonating another person. They would use (on steam) the same avatar and nickname of the trader they are trying to impersonate, they will give you and/or add to their profile links to SG and/or steamrep profile pages of the trader they are impersonating (and who has good rep and no scammer reports). A lot of people fall for it, thinking they are dealing with that trader, and will trust the scammer.

If he trusts you, there is no issue (he gives you link, you activate it or send the key link to yourself and you give him gift). If he doesn't, check his SG rep - if he has lots of positive rep (and not all of that in just the last month or so) and no real negative rep, he is likely trustworthy. Also, make sure you are not dealing with an impersonator (if the trader gives you links to SG or steamrep profile pages, make sure they really redirect to the person you are trading with).
