Well, I haven't played Borderlands 2 yet, so I didn't bother redeeming shift codes, I heard they mostly give golden keys, how important are those golden keys? and is there alternative way to get them? But I also heard there were few instances where they gave cosmetic items as well, are those cosmetic items can be obtained from somewhere else or are they forever lost for whoever missed those shift codes? And when you use a shift code are they bind to your Steam account or something? Will their rewards stay with my game even if I re-install the game or erase my save?

Also, have those shift codes ever given something beside golden keys and cosmetics?

TL;TR - Does not using shift codes hurts my ability to 100% the game? (By 100% I also mean all possible cosmetic items)

Golden keys are used to unlock gear from a special crate in sanctuary. Sometimes you also get cosmetics which usually can be aquired in-game.

Usually? so you mean there were few that I can't obtain them without the shift code?

That have all been skins or equips that are found in game. Just that some aren't so common.

If it is so then it really calms me, really wouldn't like the inability to 100% the game.

There are some special Cosmetic items, a few from Poker Night 2 that can be unlocked from poker games, and the Goliath head that only came from the diamond look chest.

But is it something I might not get a chance with if I don't use shift codes?

The Poker Night items require you play that game and beat certain matches. Shift Codes can't unlock those items. The mentioned Goliath head can be acquired from a save hacked to have the unlock item. Someone drops it, you grab and use it, head unlocked.

I don't get the 2nd thing, you mean there's no way to get the Goliath head in legit way?

Wait, so are there others like that? that I can't get in legit way anymore?

Nope, it was just that as a special edition ingame item only.

So I can still get it in legit way if I buy this limited edition from someone.

technically yes, I assume it was a shift key, as long as someone has an unused key for it you could purchase. Prob easier just not to worry too much (im extremely OCD and I understand where your coming from, but Ive just had to let it go lol) if you really want it backup your saves and use gibbedsaveeditor, technically this is cheating/hacking though.

Don't even need to do that, he could just get me to join a game with the save file and I'd drop it for him. Once I find it in the several hundred item inventory. :P

Golden keys do allow getting a few nice items for the level you use them... And I recently redeemed list of those and got around 30-40 keys...

Other than the Golden Keys, all items can be acquired in game, just that its easier to get them with the Shift Codes.

Golden Keys will open the Golden Loot Chest, which has high quality equipment, of Blue or Purple rarity. You can live without them easily enough.

A bunch of currently active Shift Codes can be found here

Thanks for the link, tho I doubt I'll use shift codes if I don't really lose anything by not using them.

You can't lose what you've never had ;)
And the golden chest loot can be a helpful boost, but you'll outlevel it anyway and you get better stuff at end game.

By 'lose' I meant lose the ability/chance to get something. So as long those shift codes and the chest loot give me something I can get in-game somehow, then it's ok.

It might be helpful boost, but gaming philosophy doesn't like the idea of that golden chest thing. So I won't use it anyway.

Redeem the Shift Codes anyway. You might never need them, but if you ever find yourself still using equipment that is 10 levels lower than your character because of some really bad luck for the last few hours, the Golden Loot Chest at least will get you some level scaled equipment.

Also useful if you are attempting a no side quest / low level run. Regular enemies and their drops are higher levels after a while, so the chest is useful then.

^ yeah use that link to find all the worthwhile codes (esp. the Tina DLC heads if you've got that DLC). Grab as many golden keys that are still active and use em to help you through the early game.

SHiFT codes are redeemed in the game menu. Some give 1 golden key, others 3 and sometimes they give you skins (which are always for a specific character) to celebrate something (e.g. Halloween or Valentine). When you activate the codes the keys are shared between all your characters. The skins are in the inventory of the first character you load the game up after activating. After that you need to "use" the skin in the inventory, then you have the skin available for the character it's for.

Golden keys are quite useful if you're lucky. Got an E-Tech gun that i used from level 39 til 45 that slags and hits hard :>

Golden keys aren't worth the hassle, I haven't gotten anything from that chest that I haven't immediately sold, Golden Showers on the other hand are much better.

Items you get with the golden keys aren't really that great, but they are helpful if you get unlucky with normal drops. I usually use my keys when i get a character to around level 25-30 to make the later part of the first playthrough a bit easier. I don't really bother with them at all after that unless i get really bad luck with drops, at max level you are better off farming bosses for oranges.

Shift codes are usually just keys, and some give items you can get from playing. The only ones that are any good are the event skin ones which as far as i know is the only way to get those skins. At the moment there are no skin ones still up except the tiny tina dlc heads, but you can get those as drops from playing the dlc.

You can find Shift codes whenever they are released Here .
