I am pretty sure I am not the only one with slow net, but I do hate it that I can't play most of the games I own due to my net. I liked how the developers of PAYDAY 2 compressed it so that we only had to download 6 gigs of setup whereas the actual game was 18. Basically, I would like to download games in a compressed form, such as the payday example.

I think most games are compressed downloads. The only way to get a better internet speed is to get better internet. I also have slow internet, and worse, a very low monthly bandwidth cap.

I would love to get better net.Thing is, where I live(India) net is very slow. Even on 3G, it is about 2 mb/ps (so download is around 180 kb/ps)

I also live just outside of the area of service of a better ISP. I've been waiting forever for them to expand their service to my area, but the outlook is not so good:( I've got so many games in my backlog, it would take over a year to dl them because of the stupid cap.

At least with steam you can download in chunks. It'll pick up where you left off downloading previously, so if you do have connection issues you don't have to start all over again.

This is my favorite thing about Steam downloading, no such guarantee when downloading drm-free games, but there are other pros and cons too.

Reason I stick to steam as my primary gaming software.

Without that feature, I would have several games I couldn't dl, without going way over my cap. It's one of my favorite Steam features.

The only way besides getting better internet, would be to change your download region to where you live the closest.

Sorry I don't think you can do anything like that. i have a slow internet connection and I download games at night or when I'm at school. You could also download games while playing a singleplayer game.

If you have friend nearby who has the games you want on his hard drive, you can copy the files to an external drive and install them on your PC. Then you'll only have to dl a little bit, instead of the whole game. Sadly, I don't know anybody near me that is a gamer, to be able to do that:(

This is an option I use a lot too, my ex would let me use the backup file function with his games that I wanted to download. USB stick backup, quick install.

Maybe if you have a friend or family member with a fast connection you could take your rig to their house and utilise their internets? I've got a friend who lives out in the countryside, occasionally he'll come over and use my connection to download his steam games etc as it takes a couple of hours at my house instead of a couple of days at his.

Study really hard, get a good job, earn lots of money, buy good internet.
Simple Really.

Damnit, I would buy 25 mb/ps if available. In India, you don;t get a better connection than 4 mb/ps *(and in my region,is 2 mb/ps)

If you study really hard and become really rich you can even get Gabe Newell personally bringing to you a hard-drive with game files every time you want to download a game. And giving you a complementary gabe-job.

Who is your ISP?

Only way you can accomplish this is to get better internet I'm afraid :/
I average several hundred MB/s and download several gigs in tens of minutes from where I am in England.
Or you could buy Physical copies of Steam Games in a store (there aren't a huge amount so this is very inefficient) and install them using that, which would lessen the download time drastically. But this doesn't take into account post-release updates and such (for example buy physical copy of DoW2, have to wait hours for updates after install)

If you have an external hard drive, you can visit friends/family who have faster internet and download the game to there.

You should check the speed of your internet compared with the speed offered to you in your contract with your provider.
A lot of people don't actually get the speed that they asked for due to either sneaky bastard providers or crossed lines and technical issues that the provider can sort out for you, or maybe some fault with a one of the splitters you have plugged into your phone line. If you aren't getting what you are paying for and thus entitled to then you are well within your rights to get in contact with them and resolve the issue. (hope this helps more than my previous post)

Problem is that you aren't really entitled to anything, because those sneaky bastards as you say advertise their offers with "up to" 50mbps or whatever ;)

Well... my Steam downloadspeed usually is about 10mb/s which is much faster then downloading from somewhere else.
So i think steam already does a great job with that.

True, dat. On my shitty 180 kb/ps steam gives me 256 kb/ps. Still, a bit more fast and that would do the trick

I'm not 100% sure if it works with steam too<<<
I had many problems downloading WoW or SC2 with game downloader. So I decided to download it with p2p (torrent). My average download speed on steam is around 1MB/s, with game client I got only 50 kB/s (wtf?). So I started download with game client. I've stopped downloading and closed downloader. Then I've downloaded pirate (Aarrr!) copy of game (1 MB/s and over!) from well-known torrent site from Sweden, pasted it into folder I've chosen with original downloader and re-run the downloader. It analyzed files and downloaded original .exe files.
You could try it with steam. But I give no warranty.
