Hi guys, I really desperate for help. Happens that I booted my laptop and it showed a black screen saying that the system folder is missing.

I used the repair feature in the installation disk and typed CHKDSK in the command line, then booted again but it shows the same screen. I did a quick google and only found a solution that is just way too complex for me to understand... and formatting, but I want to avoid it.

Can any of you help me out?

Post the solution you found here, some of us could try looking into it and give you a simpler explanation on what to do.

dont really need command, get a live distro that have Gparted, its a graphic interface for the partition manager, so you can make a new partition, save your files and then you can reinstall xp if you want (i hope that you dont use internet with xp :p)

http://www.linuxliveusb.com/en/download you can download that app, open it and select the system rescue cd distro, it will download and then it will make a usb flash bootable... Bonus track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fp7wBFYs76I

Try using fish. It's autocompletion is so good you don't need to remember every terminal command.

for commands you can use the "tab" key, it autocomplete the commands :p

Bash's autocompletion is okay. Fish is something else. You really should give it a try if you want a more user-friendly shell.

Right after I press R it takes me to a screen with a command line and it tells me to choose the partition I want to repair.

As I only have 1 it only shows 1 (Windows XP), so I press 1 and then enter and then it tells me to type the commands needed to repair it

boot and hold the F8 key there you will have the choise to get into safe mode or repair windows

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This, also if you go by Safe mode with Command Line, just type in the magic word: sfc /scannow
Which will attempt to check for CD(Read up that you have it) and try to check and copy any corrupted configuration/files.

perhaps the boot-section of your harddrive got corrupted or smth like that.
Had a similar problem where my HDD wasn't recognized by my PC. Had to buy a new HDD and install Windows. But then I could just put in my old HDD as 'slave' and I could simply copy all important data on my new one.
idk if that helps but: if you can get an external HDD somewhere and try to boot off of it (got to have windows installed an all) you could possibly at least save all important files before you probably have to format it

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Try bootcfg /rebuild. That should rebuild the boot manager to get XP booting again. If you have issues, sfc /scannow should work, but you'll need the disk in.

You could try Hirens boot disk, there are several tools there that may assist you. There is also a light XP that you can load, may help you in copying the files you need.
