My question is:
In which order should I play Half-Life. What should be first Half-Life game to play? and next ones?

True that. He was one of the best metal singers. I doubt we'll see much people that can match his talents...

I would recommend starting at the very beginning. Half Life may seem to have terrible graphics by modern standards, but it's still a wonderful game.

I'm not afraid of old graphics, I love old games <3 my whole childhood I played CS 1,6, Heroes oM&M 3 and Gothic <3

Good to hear it! It's an adventure that you won't want to miss.
I tried playing CS:GO, but quite prefer the old CS, perhaps because I tend to be bad at FPS games.
If you happen to have friends to join you on LAN, I'd recommend HL1's multiplayer, too. My favorite weapons were some adorable things called Snarks that you'll meet eventually.

dont worry, I suck at CS and most of MMO games - that's one of great amount of reasons why I love single player games, eventually co-op (cooperation in Saints Row is masterpiece)

That's not old graphics :) I just played the original Leisure Suit Larry 320x200, lol. The original doom is the same resolution.

Check this out. This picture is the real full resolution of the game.

On the contrary, Half Life 2 still looks good despite almost a decade old. The curves and shapes could be more refined, but the details of the in-game objects look beautiful.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Personally, I have no gripe with the graphics, but some of my friends have complained about them, ergo that part of my above comment.

IF Black Mesa was finished that would also be an acceptable place to start, but since it isnt, nevermind.

Half life 1
Half life opposing force
Half life blue shift (thou this one isn't so good)

Black Mesa (basically a remade half life 1 with more modern graphics engine etc. Worth the play! You might want to play this last if you feel that replaying HL1 so fast would be boring)

Half life 2
Episode 1
Episode 2

now I noticed something called Half-Life Source, what can You say about it? What is it?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Source is pretty much the same as Half-Life 1, just upgraded to using the newer engine that Half-Life 2 uses. I don't remember it being much different from the original, just looks nicer. One funny thing was that the arrow physics from Half-Life 2 were used for the tranquilizer arrows in Half-Life 1 and they nailed enemies to the wall. I suppose that's one way to tranquilize someone.

Source is what Saniala mentioned. It basicallyincludes a few upgrades to it's physics engine and that's it. I advise you to play Black Mesa which is a completely remade Half Life 1 with more modern graphics and physics. There are slight differences between the two so some fights in Black Mesa might seem easier but more immersive.

if you can, play blue shift and opposing force.
blue is very short and it's intertesting to play as a "barney". :3
OF is even better than the original half-life.

I've played them all, at the time each was released. They're great, but I don't miss them as much as I used to. HL2 was so good, I can understand why Valve hasn't done HL3.

Valve was sayin' that they didn't want to disappoint fans, just like Pyrahna Bytes recently said about Gothic serie :D

I played them HL, Opposing force, Blue shift, HL2, then episode 1 (ep 2 on it's way)
though I would recommend to play Blue Shift before Opposing Force. As Mullins said, blue shift is short, and you don't see half of the aliens Gordon or Shephard faces in HL / OF. And I also enjoyed Opposing Force way more than the original game :)

Just play them in order, it's not like there's a million of them :P. Also yes, you have to play them, both Half Life and HL2 set the bar for FPS when they came out. Keep in mind that they will feel dated after so much time but at the time they were glorious.

I read whole article about first game - map was little but "hand-crafted" because of lack of money to make it bigger so devs were forced to make it restricted to little area - that's how barrier was made. and with all monsters etc player couldn't go everywhere he/she wanted (unless he/she was cheater) and it made it a lot "bigger" :D

I've played all the Half-Life games a few years back, prepare to be disspointed by the hype. The first one is pretty boring, the AI is pretty terrible (which may have been good in it's day, I wouldn't know) and other then killing stuff there isn't a whole lot to do. The second is slightly better, but nothing to drool over. I like the episodes best, not too long and varied in gameplay.

Permalink

The AI was actually revolutionary at its time :P, this is why people shouldn't judge old games by present day standards. And the pacing was excellent, you've just gotten used to run and gun cinematic shooters.

Permalink

That's why I'm trying to warn him. If the AI is basically the entire game, it is important to mention since that made the game very boring for me. No offense intended, but I think too many people that recommend this game have nostalgia goggles on and aren't judging the game fairly.

I also grew up on old games and I don't care about graphics or AI normally, but this AI is really predictable and boring to play against and fighting enemies is the only thing you do in Half-Life 1. I love old games, but this game is not as great as it's hyped up to be, not for me anyway. Hopefully you will have a better experience, I'm curious to see what you think of it.

Actually my point is that you're the one not judging the game fairly, both games were excellent at their time, there's no nostalgia involved since we are perfectly aware they can't hold up, it's just fact, heck Half Life 2 was voted game of the decade years ago by industry people. We are judging them based on what they were when they came out not what they are now, that would make no sense.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I get what you're saying, but what I'm arguing is how the game holds up now, which in my opinion it doesn't. Though even if I imagine it with a great ai, the game has very standard level design, with basic weapons, a somewhat interesting story (though very reminiscent of Doom). So even for that time I personally would not have been impressed by it. Those kind of titles are pretty meaningless and very subjective. I know the game is lauded, but that doesn't mean I have to agree, and "the industry" is pretty bad at reviewing games honestly, especially since they are biased to give good reviews and sell popular opinions. I'm only trying to give a more realistic view of what the game will be like when you play it now, instead of saying how good it was back then. In the end it is just my opinion, same as you have yours.

Oh how wrong you are, such a shame, you think you're not being affected by almost 20 years of newer and increasingly better games and you would feel the same then as you do now but I guarantee you that you're seeing it through a filter than you wouldn't have had back then. I don't say that to be disrespectful, I say that truly saddened that the passage of time makes most older gems (yes,I did mean to spell gems) end up seeming unimpressive or "overhyped", happens to everyone and will happen more and more over time, happened to me last year playing Baldur's Gate, still haven't finished it because I got bored, the result of being spoiled by modern day RPGs.

I am immune :p I'm sure I'm influenced, but I also grew up on old games and I still play old games, so I can make an educated guess. Though in the end it doesn't matter to me, I didn't really like the first game when I played it, I enjoyed the second game but didn't think it was that amazing. Some old games live up to their expectations, some of them I can see why they were considered good in their time, but for these games I personally don't see it. Perhaps it's because of the genre, I don't like CoD or Battlefield games much either.

I played Half-Life 2, then Episode 1 then 2. I loved them to pieces. I decided I wanted to play the original. I haven't beat it yet, but it's pretty fun. I don't think the order you play them in really matters if you're like me and don't care about the story (not sure how much of a story there is since I didn't really pay much attention to it). The original obviously has less features than 2 (like no gravity gun) so playing the second then the first might not be the best idea. Just play them, I don't really think the order matters, it's a great experience no matter what.
Edit: I should note that my first experience with Half-Life 2 was in 2013 and Half-Life 1 in 2015. I'm not blinded by nostalgia, I just really love the games.

If you can bear the old 3d graphics then go from first to last:
HL1, Opposing Force, Blue Shift, HL2, ep1, ep2, (Lost Coast)

As said before you should probably play them in the order they were released BUT after playing blue shift i would suggest trying the mod azure sheep. It is how blue shift should have been!

Loved that mod more than the expansion.

Also worth mentioning. The demo for HL1 features a part that was cut from the game. It was a lot of fun before the game hit so even if it is a demo it might be worth checking out.

It is called Uplink.
