It is time for yet another obligatory (?) birthday train, this year I hide it in a movie discussion thread, let's see where it gets me.

As we are closing down the 2010s, I am interested in what the members of SG think were the best movies coming out of this decade, be it highest overall impact, or your guilty pleasures, or anything inbetween. If you have the time to create a list of 5 (be it a short list or a few words for each), it would be much appreciated=)

Did I mention a train? Oh so I want to get your responses without offering up anything as sacrafice to the elder gods? Fear not, the station starts right here (SG tools protected for some basic stuff, all train carts have a minimum requirement of LVL2)

Now that you're asking i just realised that i could name a tons of amazing movies from this decade.

I think my numbah 1 would be Interstellar.

Here's some that comes to my mind right now :

The Raid
The Raid 2
Apostle
Bad Times at the El Royale
Intouchables
Killer Joe
Drive
Whiplash
Sicario
Nightcrawler
Beasts of the Southern Wild
The Man From Nowhere
Kingsman: The Secret Service
Kick-Ass
Snowpiercer
Get Out
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Hunt

Not naming the more obvious one like Tarantinos, John Wick, Mad Max, some Marvel....etc

Wow, I forgot about Drive and Killer Joe! Great stuff.

The Hunt was also a great movie... Too bad Mads Mikkelsen had to stain his career with that piece of garbage that was on Netflix not long ago.

Polar ? Haven't seen this one yet.

Last movie with him i've seen was Arctic and he was great here. I can recommend this one if you like "solo performance" type of movie, kinda like Ryan Reynolds in Buried or James Franco in 127 Hours, or one of my fav : Moon with Sam Rockwell.

Off the top of my head and in no particular order:

Her
Nymphomaniac
Birdman
Gone Girl
Whiplash
Three Billoboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

would be some of my favourite movies of the last decade. Sadly I can no longer keep up with the new releases though, so I can't claim it's a thoroughly informed list.

(and yes, someone beat me to it, but Baby Driver is very good, too)

If I make a list, I will reveal my bias towards sci-fi and fantasy.. Here we go:

  1. Interstellar (2014)
  2. Inception (2010)
  3. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
  4. The Big Short (2015)
  5. Relatos Salvajes (2014) (a.k.a. Wild Tales, in English)
  6. Looper (2012)
  7. Arrival (2016)
  8. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
  9. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
  10. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Reserved for honorable mentions as I am surely to remember other amazing movies...:
Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)
Doctor Strange (2016)

Ok it's not on the most solid ground when it comes to time travel but it's mostly a character piece supported by excellent performances from the whole cast.

Here are my eight 10/10 rated movies out of the 355 ones I've seen with a release date between 2010-2019.
Hello Ghost (2010) πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
Guy tries to kill himself but fails. He is now haunted by ghosts who need him to do things for them so they can pass on. Touching.
The Thieves (2012) πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
Korean and Hong Kong thieves get together for a big heist. Ocean's 11-esque (not that I've seen Ocean's 11...).
Coherence (2013) πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
A comet passes over Earth. Eight friends gather for dinner. Strange things start happening. Brilliant.
I Saw the Devil (2010) πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
Agent's girlfriend gets taken by serial killer. Agent seeks revenge. Thrilling.
Confession of a Murder (2012) πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
The prescription time of a murder runs out. The murderer writes a book confessing it all and becomes a big celebrity. Failed policeman tries to make things right. Surprising.
The Terror Live (2013) πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
A has-been radio show host gets a live phone call from a bomber while on air. Set almost entirely in the radio studio. Absolutely brilliant.
Attack the Block (2011) πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
Aliens attack a London block, but they didn't count on the youth delinquents to save the day. Funny.
Intouchables (2011) πŸ‡«πŸ‡·
Ex-criminal gets job as an aide to paralyzed rich guy. Touching.

Some movies I really enjoyed. All gave me a certain kind of feeling while I watched them but i can't really describe them without spoiler which i would really like to avoid.

Mad Max: Fury Road I didn't really enjoy the first and second Mad Max movies. It's post apocalyptic world didn't seem real. And that's where Beyond Thunderdome became really and Fury Road depicted this world even better. Like the way they are harvesting methane or milk
Looper The decision he had to make in the end, plus they dismembered a guy to catch his future which was really cool
Split The fact that his powers only came from his beliefs. Plus there were some funny personalities there :)
Life The realization of their own helplessness at the end yet they still tried to escape. Plus the execution of that escape attempt
Star Wars: The Force Awakens changed Captain Phillips, it was good but not great. At first I intentionally left out star wars, marvel, dc and most blockbusters, but than the list wouldn't show the truth. I born too late for the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy was too different from what I knew about that universe to really like it. The seventh installment had something about the Force that was really missing from the prequels

It's hard to make a five point list, i really enjoyed a lot of movies in the past decade: Hobbit trilogy, Kingsman, Shutter Island, Thor: Ragnarok, Coco, 21 Jump Street, The Trust,

Vice was a bit of hit and miss for me. I liked it but I felt it could have been better in some areas, mostly character development.

Shape of Water and Birdman should have been on my list though. It was honestly surprising that they managed to capture mainstream awards and audience despite being so unlike what most mainstream movies are peddling these days.

it's the classic duo's comedy style, but i think most people didn't even know what they were watching. they read "HOLMES and WATSON" and they assumed it was another BBC miniseries about Sherlock Holmes. 🀷

i wonder if they also watched talladega nights or step brothers and later complained it wasn't the kind of comedy they were expecting... it's ferrel+reilly!
what did people think that would happen? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

I have seen all those movies everyone keeps mentioning Interstellar, The Raid movies, Drive, John Wick movies, etc. No one has mentioned or I'm sure hasn't heard of (because of lack of advertisement) the awesome action sci-fi flick "Upgrade" with Logan Marshall Green. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend you check it out. I would say this would be one of the most surprising movies I have sci-fi movies I have seen in quite some time. The other movies that everyone mentions I agree would be on my top list, but Upgrade really surprised me and I am shocked that not a lot of people have heard or seen it everytime I ask people all around New York.
