What should I buy ?
I have Logitech 310, 710 and X360 gamepads. They all work great.
Btw, I think you mean gamepad not joystick.

I think joysticks are only those with a great big stick. The gamepad/joypad has generally 0 to 2 sticks (e.g. NES and 360 controller) and a lot of buttons.
I've tried only the 360 wired, great controller. Don't know if the xone one is any different.
I've read good things about the steam controller, hard to "learn" but with many customization options.
But if you want to stay below 40$ I think the (wired) 360 is the best.

Confirm the Logitech F*10 series work awesome (I got 710), both with new and old games.
As for a true joystick, also go with Logitech, I use an older Wingman Force 3D and it's great too, but not for arcade games. It's best for space sims, flight sims and realistic racing games (the directional force feedback is an awesome tech, sadly missing from any new controllers).

Your question is too vague, you need to add more info, for example:
budget?
are you used to a particular joypad?
are you going to use it with some games in particular?

In this case I guess the 360 is the best one
the xbox one is slightly better but it's too expensive here, you can buy almost two x360, it's not worth it.
If the price different isn't that big go for an xbox one, otherwise the 360 will be fine.
I have a steam controller too, it's... "weird", in some games it's better than a normal controller, in some games is awful, it's very subjective.
It's definitely great for racing games, you can use the gyro to drive and that's really funny, for generic action games, as I said it's a gamble, you'll love it or you'll hate it.

Actually I'm only interested in steam controller from It can play any games in steam without controller support. But I guess it will bad optimize for some games. And the prices is little high for it's value. I also think Xbox 360 controller is great options to buy right now.

You CAN play everything with it, you can even use a browser with it, are you watching a streaming? You can sit on the couch and use it as a remote control
The configuration tool is powerful, games like civilization will be playable but a mouse will (obviously) always feel better

They were huge. After a few hours your hands would get cramps.
The smaller one was originally for the japanes market but became the standard soon.
I think they tested their original design with 2,30m basketball players and thought "great, fits perfectly!"

Plus there's loads of replacement boards available on eBay for the wired one. I bought a clone for cheap, within six months of me getting it my nephew did something to make it intermittently jerk to the left. You know how you fix a Rock Candy? You buy another one for more than the 360 replacement board costs. grumbles

I have Logitech Precision. It's cheap and solid.

If you don't need some superstaff and you play not often - it's very reasonable.)

If you want assymetrical analogs go for the 360 (honestly, the XOne controller is not better, but it will cost more), if not, go for the Dualshock 3 (or 4, it's better and easier to use on PC).
I have the DS3 from my PS3, it's really good, but i've always used PS controllers. No official PC drivers, but SCP Toolkit do the same and it's really simple to setup.
DS4 as far as i know, have no official drivers too, but Windows will recognize it, and it's officialy supported on Steam (same level of the Steam Controller).
X360, official PC controller, plug n play, no problems with games, but really bad d-pad, almost unusable for platformers that need that (at least for me).
At the end, every major controller is the same, depends a lot from the analog layout (some people can't play with one or another).

I think the Xbox1S controller is an excellent alternative to the Steam controller, but the Bluetooth settings work best if you're running windows 10. Otherwise, go with the 360 controller and a wireless adapter. (or use the Xb1 with a USB cable).

I have the x360, I like it very much. I bought the wireless version, I found a good deal and couldn't miss it. The official wireless receptor died extremely fast, it wasn't very durable (and it was official, what the...) but the gamepad it's quite good in quality material, i guess.
I bought in amazon the cheapest receiver I could find and it's working better than the microsoft one.

There was a similar discussion very recently. I'll just link my reply here.

i can't stand the xbox controller layout (dpad/analog placement) so i went with steelseries. but really in short anything with x-input > dinput would be best... xbox controller or any other x-input device is far superior to a d-input device (playstation controller) for pc gaming.

If you want something easy and straight, go with the Xbox 360. Mind that it will fail after a couple years, no matter what controller you get. The analog sticks wear out and they will start to drift.
If you want something that will open a world of possibilities, that comes with an extremely powerful software, go with the Steam Controller. I have it since 1 weeks ago and already changed absolutely everything I knew about gamepads, I'm not using a 360 again. But the learning curve is higher than the Xbox 360. The bumpers kind suck, too, but you can easily replace those with the grips.

have the steam controller, i think is brilliant, especially if you played with kb+ms as your main input method. you can customize it in many many ways, here are some examples

the only gripe with the steam controller, and it is a big one, is that it only works with Steam, so programs outside steam will have to be run trough steam in order to make the program recognize the controller as a controller, otherwise it works like a very limited mouse.
that said there are some programs that aim to fix this, like GloSC, but i haven quite make it work, i do run my emulators trough steam and that way they work fine.

have a ps4 and x360 one ... idk why, but the ps4 one doesn't seem to me as
"snappy" responsive (with cable or blue tooth) as the x360 one

Since your poll is about controllers instead of joysticks, I can provide some input into that since I have both a 360 controller and Steam Controller. I have written a Steam review about it. Although I like the controller, I gave it a not recommended and explained why in the review. Things have changed since that review and I should probably update it. You aren't required to use the beta Steam client anymore, but I'd recommend it as new features and bug fixes for the controller are released quicker and sooner. The starting Big Picture with the button has, at least for a while now, finally been fixed. As to whether or not they keep breaking setups, I wouldn't know since I actually haven't touched it in months, but I continue to go to my 360 controller for things.
Basically if all the games you plan to play have native controller support, just get an Xbox controller. If you also want to play games that don't have support for controllers, get the Steam Controller.
If you can wait for sales, I've the wired 360 controllers go under $30. I started with a wired one, which I think I nabbed on a sale for $28 on Amazon. I later picked up two wireless controllers for around $35 instead of a 2nd wireless controller so I could play couch coop games without all the wires. I use rechargeable AA batteries in them, which I already had, so that's not an extra expense.

+1 for dualshock 4
around $40++
Currently use it, but I never use another controller though... (might be biased)
I'm on laptop, pair it with built-in bluetooth and play, you can change color and brightness too in steam XD

I'm thinking to buy joystick for my pc. What would you experienced joystick users suggest as a good buy? I actually don't care If it wired or wireless. I'd like to keep the price under $40 if possible.
Example of some games i would like to play with
Furi
Dark souls fanchise
